Oh my goodness hpv, thank you!!  I think this might now be my very favorite image from the movie.  So true--the shadows, the eyes open/eyes closed. . . .  It really mirrors their facial expressions during SNIT, I think.  Jack looks at Ennis and draws him in, and once Ennis relaxes into it, he has the same expression with eyes closed and mouth open, just drinking in the unbelievable love he feels in that moment.

Thanks, Esme, too, for pointing out that Jack has his eyes wide open here--he faces the situation head-on--while Ennis has his eyes closed, unable maybe to face their love.

I thinks all the comments in this, and other threads, speaks volumes for the brilliant acting abilities of two very young men.  They have everyone believing they are really in love, have not seen each other in 4 years, and a whole host of other things.

I hope I live long enough to see them when they have "matured" as actors.

This scene was brilliant. I really like the fact that it was done without the usual romance lines..

"I've thought about you for so long.."
"I've been dreaming about this moment.."
"I just want to hold you forever..."

The acting was so good, dialog of this type was unnecessary.

City Slicker, we have had our disagreements in the past, but on this scene and thought we stand side by side.  This scene is brilliant.

True--I never thought of it that way.  Their actions speak louder than their words ever could.  Reminds me of the last time they're together, when we see them fighting by the river, but then when they're sleeping in the tent, Ennis is lying behind Jack with his arm around him.  :(

That is so true.  Words were really not needed here.....everything Ennis did, and the way Jack reacted, was enough to show how they felt about each other.

As Esme says, less is so definitely more.

Another little thing in this pic I hadnt noticed before.....as Ennis is nuzzling Jack, his hand is still on Jack, having already stroked his face, in preparation for having to separate from him to go back upstairs.  You see his hand steady on Jack's chest, which I had never noticed before.  Ennis obviously had to keep touching Jack until the last possible moment.....

 <^( Beautiful
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

<^( Beautiful

It is so difficult starting the day with this pic.  It is painfully beautiful.

Jack's eyes are half-closed, while Ennis's are shut.  They need not really see how the other feels.  They know.

Ledger and Gyllenhaal are superb in this scene.  They take your breath away.

Was the quote from Romeo and Juliet? It was very beautiful.

This picture is so beautiful, you see Ennis, never wants to let go, just wants to hold forever the man he loves.

Jack is so beautiful in that, you see, he's been waiting for that moment, and hopes that moment never ends.

I had noticed this but I'm so glad you brought it up Christie.  You see Ennis initiating a separation about three times, but he cannot keep himself from touching Jack.  He is soooo in love with Jack and he doesn't realize it yet.

It is a beautiful picture.  Jack is stunned by Ennis, he would never have imagined this in his wildest dreams....well, maybe in his wildest dreams!  The way Jack is looking at Ennis, while Ennis is not able to stop touching him.   <^(

I love the way their faces are overlapping here--they're touching in every way possible, even though they're fully clothed and standing up outside, in a public place.  Jack's brow is creased as he gazes at Ennis; Ennis's eyes are closed as he drinks in the relief of this moment, to finally be reunited with the man he has dreamt about for so long.  Can you imagine how many times each of them must have envisioned this moment??

It hurts, it is so beautiful.

Shieldmaid, you always seem to describe these scenes so perfectly and so beautifully.  I agree with everything you said....and to think about them thinking about the other all those years, imagining what it would feel like to see each other again, to feel each other, to kiss each other......no wonder Ennis reacted the way he did.   Four years of passion in that kiss, and more.    <^(  <^(

This scene makes me think of Shakespeare's Sonnet 97:

How like a winter hath my absence been
From thee, the pleasure of my fleeting years.

This moment is spring and summer, love renewed and hope awakened; and their hours and days and years were fleeting.

Yes, and I chose the Anglican version for this.  I think it is most apt for the reunion kiss.

At least we can be sure their devotion is absolute here, no matter whence the expression or source of their love comes . . .

Time does not bring relief: you all have lied
Who told me time would ease me of my pain!
I miss him in the weeping of the rain:
 I want him at the shrinking of the tide;
The old snows melt from ev'ry mountain side,
 And last year's leaves are smoke in every lane;
But last year's bitter loving must remain
Heaped on my heart and my old thoughts abide.
There are a hundred places where I fear
To go, so with his memory they brim.
And entering with relief some quiet place
where never fell his foot or shone his face.
I say "There is no mem'ry of him here,"
And so stand stricken, so remembering him.

Thomas ..

I'm at a loss.  You are destroying me.

Those may be the most perfect, moving words ever used here, they could have been torn from the heart of either man throughout their relationship, and I can't help but  move from this embrace to Ennis alone at the tragic end  ....  :\'(    :\'(    :\'(     Beautiful!

'

tpe, you somehow manage to always find the right voice!   ^f^

This one scene alone is cause for all the accolades and awards received by BBM.  It takes us in seconds from lust to love, from solitude to solidarity, from hope to eventual heartbreak.

Everything they feel in these moments, how they are torn down and rebuilt during this kiss, makes the next 16 years of impossible love possible.  How could we or they imagine their lives without each other, in whatever form they might have to endure, after this kiss??
