From the Heart
« on: Mar 06, 2006, 12:32 PM »
I intend to send thank you tokens of esteem to Jake, Heath & Michelle, Anne, and Ang Lee for the priceless gift that is BBM.

As you all know, I an a Gyllenhaal fan, so I hope you will not mind my arranging the first token to Jake.

I have arranged for the Old Stile Press (My favorite fine press in the UK) to send him the portfolio of prints entitled 'The Landscape Within'.

http://www.oldstilepress.com/Pagescreens/Lands1.html

I intend to write up a letter to Jake that will acompany this portfolio, and I would be honored if any of you would want to join me in this first presentation to the BBM family.  I would happily include your true names if you approve of the gift.  Please send me your names via PM.  I will shoulder the cost.

Nothing will be good enough for Jake, but this token will mean more to me that it will to him.

Thanks Froggy.  I feel powerless to do anything else but show my admiration for their work in BBM.  If you want me to append a name for you, just PM me.

The sea is fitting in a gift to Jack: I intend it as a reference to Ennis Del Mar.

I am trying to figure out what to give Heath and Michelle.

This is a beautiful thing for you to do.  Might I suggest that you explain the significance of the gift to you and its symbolism.  It will make the gift that much more personal and meaningful.  But knowing you from your posts, I don't doubt that a heart wrenching letter will accompany this gift.

As for Heath and Michelle, might I suggest offering a free night of baby sitting?  They sound like they could use a good nights sleep.  j/k  ;)

Maybe something about soulmates?
Or something to do with Mathilda?

Thank you Kindred and Froggy.

Kindred, I shall take your advice and try to incorporate a short explanation of the significance.

I like the idea of a gift incorporating 'soulmates'.

Both of you must know that my heart is bursting right now.  I must calm down.

Soulmates to me, implies two people that come together to form a whole, each complementing the other.  As Jake said in the LOGO documentary, Ennis and Jack are like the Yin and the Yang, coming together to form the whole, much like a key to a lock...

I'm sure with some thought, you will come up with a profoundly meaningful gift to send.

Try not to look at this as something sad.  We have received a beautiful gift from them all, something truly from the heart.  Be happy that their gift has made a difference.

Don't feel ashamed...or you are gonna start make me feel bad!!!!
Sometimes friends try, but it's not enough...I did try calling Jake, but his cell is busy, and I'm pretty sure is is recovering from a fantastic hungover...
If I were to speak to him, he would send you his love and bestest wink to try and cheer you up himself!!!

Draft of my portion of the letter to accompany the prints.  (Lilie will add a separate section).  All this depends on space limitations on the card that will contain the letter.

Dear Mr. Gyllenhaal,

'Brokeback Mountain' the movie has touched us deeply.  We are grateful for your having helped bring this most wonderful of cinematic creations to fruition.  Your taking on the role of Jack Twist is truly something that we will cherish for as long as we live.

May we present you with this portfolio of prints as token of our esteem.  These prints by the Artist Bert Isaac portray aspects of that changeable interface between rocky land and sea.  As the name 'Ennis Del Mar' translates to 'Island of the Sea', it is only fitting that you, the progenitor of the role of Jack Twist, be offered these images of water and rock, with their innumerable reflections, edges and shifting boundaries.

We have always admired your work in cinema, which has given us and many friends immense pleasure over the years.  'Brokeback Mountain' the movie is no different, but, in every sense, is truly special.  Your acting in this and in other films has captured the hearts and imaginations of many people from all around the world.

We want to thank you for everything. The respect and affection we and our friends have for you is unchanging.  And our gratitude is forever.

Hello friends.

I have received the following update from Frances McDowall at the OLd Stile Press.  I append her response.  She mentions that a copy is being prepared by the binders and that the portfolio will be ready in a week.  I hope that this delay is acceptable.  (It will give me time to think about the next gift for Heath and Michelle.)  I am sending the amount due once she has determined the total.

Dear Thomas

Your generosity is considerable - the film must indeed have moved you deeply (we look forward to seeing it, but it hasn't yet reached our distant part of Wales!! - though, obviously, we have heard a good deal about it).

The Landscape Within is a marvellous collection of mountainous images by Bert Isaac - you will have seen the description of it on our website - but have you also seen that if you click on Artists Prints and then on Bert Isaac you get nearly all of the prints shown separately.  In the 'book' you get a large slipcase with a portfolio and a book.  The portfolio has all the prints individually wrapped in paper printed with the title and a little about it.  The book reveals this artist's way of working to make his prints
- the medium he chooses and how it relates to the subject chosen . . . he ranges over the profound impression upon him of great printmakers through the history of art and then to the effect upon him of the landscape around him and within him.  It is a moving account of how close to infinity he feels when attempting to convey the power of a landscape in an image.

It is also described in our Bibliography - with a little anecdote about the artist and his wife.

At the more practical level - we can await your letter because just at present I have no copies of the book in our store, the binders are working on it so we would have to wait a week or so to send it off anyway.  Sorry, but we can't deal with cards or Paypal as yet - but if you can send a dollar cheque/check when I send you an invoice, I hope that will be all right for you.  I will need to discover the cost of postage (do you yet know where you would want it sent to - California has a tax levy and perhaps other states too . .  I would need to let you know that when I post it off).

Lots of questions - but we are moved by your desire to redress the affront by the Oscars!

It looks as though it would be around £405 or $710 - but I can be more exact when the parcel is sent.

withour best wishes
Frances

Here is my latest response.

Thank you Frances,

I shall send you the cheque once you have determined the total amount for the portfolio plus postage.  As is with the last order (the Sonnets, if you may recall :-)), could I request that you send the portfolio immediately after you receive the copy from the binders?  I promise you that the dollar cheque will be mailed to you as soon as you determine the exact amount.

I will send you the letter (which explains a bit why I had chosen this portfolio) sometime today.  I am a moderator at the Brokeback Mountain Forum (ennisjack.com -- cited in Annie Proulx's website) and I will also send best wishes from many of the site's members along with this personal offering.

Thank you.  Please let me know the final amount as soon as you determine the total.  I shall send you the letter and the contact address for Mr. Gyllenhaal shortly.

   Many thanks.

   Thomas

As I will be sending the letter by today, I would expect that not everyone will have a chance to PM me on time.  Hence, I shall include best wishes from all members of ennisjack.com.
