A Rambler sedan comes rushing into the lot. Ennis jumps up as if he was expecting to be hit by the front bumper. Joe Aguirre gets out heads to his office trailer, slams the door. The boys watch expectantly waiting for some word. Finally, Aguirre comes back, opens the door yells out:
You pair a’ deuces lookin’ for work, I suggest you get your scrawny asses in here pronto.
The boys enter the office. Ennis leans casually against the wall, Jack stands defiant, legs spread, thumbs in jeans pockets.
Aguirre lays out his plan for the boys summer: Up on Brokeback the Forest Service got designated campsites on the allotments. Them camps can be three, four miles from where we pasture the woolies. Bad predator loss if there’s nobody lookin’ after ‘em at night. Now what I want is the camp tender (looking at Ennis) stay in the main camp where the Forest Service says. But the herder (lookin’ at Jack) he’s gonna’ pitch a pup tent on the QT with the sheep an’ he’s gonna’ sleep there. Eat your supper and breakfast in camp but ya’ sleep with the sheep, 100%. No fire. Don’t leave no sign, you roll up that tent every mornin’ case the Forest Service snoops around.
Aguirre’s phone rings and he answers: Yeah. - No. NO! Not on your fu**in’ life!
Meanwhile the boys shuffle around, now that they know they'll be livin' together Ennis catches a glance a’ Jack while he’s not lookin’, Jack does the same of Ennis, checkin’ out his partner for the next three months.
