The montage of scenes from daily life on the mountain continues with the camp tender, Ennis, scrubbing out the coffee pot in the stream, looking up at the mountain (in envy?) and in Annie's words . ". . Ennis looked across a great gulf and sometimes saw Jack, a small dot moving across a high meadow, as an insect moves across a tablecloth . . ."
Next we see Jack, up on the mountain moving the sheep, he spies a coyote and impulsively jumps into action, takes aim, fires, and misses, the coyote trots away . . .
JACK (to himself): Dammit. . . Shit!
