beans for sure, at a picnic on sunday i saw my sister eating baked beans and all i could do was smile.   i smiled for the fact that no one else knew what i was thinking.  at that time with everything else going on..the music the laughter and there i was thinking of bbm.  it was nice...    :P

I'll bet it was nice maggie.  It is like we have our own little secret and nobody else knows what they are missing.

It is interesting to me you should mention the beans because I bought some this past week and ate them yesterday. As soon as my hand touched the can on the cupboard shelf I though of BBM.   :)

What about the windows?

Ennis is looking through a window when Jack arrives at his home above the laundromat.

Alma looks through a window and sees Jack and Ennis kissing.

I'm almost certain Ennis looks through a window in Jack's childhood bedroom.

No image available.

And when he closes the closet door at the end, there is a window just next to it.

Dang, you're good. I never noticed that. It must mean something....

Maybe looking out into the world and seeing what's right in front of you..... hint hint Ennis.

How about the many moments of sexual tension?

I'm starting to get tired so I shall make my point through pictures.

Work with me on this one . . .

Wow, great pictures especially this one.  Yes, lots of moments that show the build up of tension between them.  I love it when they look at each other, but not at the same time.

Did anybody mentioned the Clouds. The clouds were almost always dark.
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

Postcards are such an important symbol of BBM.

In a good way and a sad way.  :\'(

Yes, for me, it is sad, but so meaningful.  No wonder that we, as a forum, chose to say thank you by sending postcards to the cast and people involved...

Horses and horse's trailers, I just can't make it  :-\\ :\'(

Horses and sheep, yes.  :)

I would even say: trailers.  Ennis's trailer certainly made an impression on me with its spartan furnishings and simplicity.

Wonderful, greenfrog.  I had never thought of how many times a window or window view figures so prominently in many of the scenes.  Thanks.  :)

Not exactly a symbol, but the sense of space and timelessness on the mountain, in contrast with the narrowness of life below. I always think of those huge skies - I believe it's Montana that gets called the big sky country but the sky dominates in so many shots here, and those long shots when Jack is high up riding among the sheep, and the panorama at the beginning as the flock makes it way up from the foothills. It all remoinds me of Firzgerald's description of " the green breast of a new world" at the end of "The Great Gatsby", a typically American sense of a new world, unspoiled and almost limitless.

Symbols I will forever associate with BBM scenes?

Fishin' duddies
Cowboy hats
Rodeo
Small woden horses (I am starting to see them in all the furniture and deco shops i go to!!)
black zippos
beans
roses...and their stems
tire iron
and so much more...

so many things are now associated to bbm...that I see it everywhere!!!
Support bacteria, they are the only culture some people have!

I love all these symbols, and yes, I also see and feel and sense BBM everywhere.  I've already said I feel like I'm channeling Ennis or Jack or Jack's Mom sometimes, with a movement.

My favorites:  Jeans, cowboy boots, cowboy hats, belts with big-ass buckles, no underwear, beans, whiskey, cigs, paper bags, old trucks.

I love your mention of paper bags and old trucks.  :)

How can I look at an old GM truck the same way again?

Ok Froggy, there are a couple I don't understand.

What is a fishin' duddie? Is that like an old fuddy duddy?    ;D
And why black zippos? Aguirre's and Jack's lighters were gold. Was Ennis' black?

You got a point  %&)

I'd like to mention mountains too...

Yup!  These are the Three Sisters in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

They played the role of the Brokeback Mountain  :-\\ :\'(
