I'm glad you said that window that is great!  I love the look on Ennis's face when Jack first pulls up after 4 years...that grin is classic.  The happiness in his face says it all.

What about the windows?

Ennis is looking through a window when Jack arrives at his home above the laundromat.

Alma looks through a window and sees Jack and Ennis kissing.

I'm almost certain Ennis looks through a window in Jack's childhood bedroom.

No image available.

And when he closes the closet door at the end, there is a window just next to it.

What is a fishin' duddie? Is that like an old fuddy duddy?    ;D
And why black zippos? Aguirre's and Jack's lighters were gold. Was Ennis' black?

it was late , and I was tired...but you knew I meant Fishin' buddies!!
And I believe Ennis was black...then again...I could just have written Zippos! ;)

Windows are interesting because they connect the inside with th eoutside yet cut the one off from the other. They're a barrier, and one we like to see as hard and fixed, though scientifically glass is a sort of liquid and flows, or at least ancient glass did. But inlike many barriers they're transparent to light and heat. You can see the windows in the movie as a barrier, eg in the trailer between Ennis and the natural world - but the other side of the coin is that windows convey a sense of possibility and show you what's out thee if you want to put the barrier behind you. all this fits so well into the movie.

Yes dear, I knew you meant fishin' buddies but I don't get to tease you enough so jumped at the chance.  ;D

You know, it is funny that I never noticed Ennis' lighter. Immediately, first viewing, I noticed that Aguirre's and Jack's were the same lighter, noticed that Ennis didn't have one on the mountain and never gave it a thought after that. I will now have to check.

Yup, Ennis' lighter was black with blue writing or symbols on it. The lighter looks to have been well used as the black is worn off around the edges.

Good point welshwitch , I agree with you. Glass can be seen as the barrier that keeps Jack and Ennis from being together, yet neither of them take the initiative to break it in order to reach each other. and in the end, glass is the barrier between Ennis and being free.... free to be himself, free to love, free to not be burdened by his mistakes he made with jack, not fighting for the best thing he had in his life.

I'd like to mention mountains too...

Yup!  These are the Three Sisters in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

They played the role of the Brokeback Mountain  :-\\ :\'(

Oh!  Thank you.  Okay, here's a question -- did we ever see the peak of Brokeback Mountain?  In what shot might we have seen it?  Which peak or which slopes were we seeing I wonder?

Refresh my memory -- where else do we see Ennis's lighter?  Except when he's messing with it when he's waiting for Jack?  I can't tell what it looks like from the pic above (regarding windows).  Black with blue on it, hmmm...  Too bad that didn't show up for auction...or maybe it did.

Yes it is Kathy. It is very real. But it is a place that can not be seen because it is in our hearts and minds.

Yes I know it is very real in that sense.  I just want to look at that picture and point to the peak and say that's Brokeback Mountain.  And I want to know the elevation :)  I'm a science nerd, besides a romantic.

And I wish it were there in the real world, because think of how great it would be to have one's own ashes scattered there - I'm serious. I love the US, wouldn't mind my mortal remains ending uo there, and can't imagine a better place than the mountain.

The symbolism of place is a very powerful thing.  Mythic places, most especially.  They need not exist except in one's mind and heart.

You know how they made Riverside, Iowa, the future birthplace of Captain Kirk?  And that highway in New Mexico the Extraterrestrial Highway?  We could go pick out some perfect mountain in Wyoming, and declare it Brokeback Mountain and see what we could get going.

Hello kathy.  Vermont has already designated one of its mountains as Brokeback Mountain, and I would suspect that Wyoming would probably follow this example in a few years (if not sooner).  Mythic places have a way of translating themselves into some form of reality.  I guess it is a natural thing -- for people to try to approximate an imaginary place with something distinctly real.  In this way, legends live on and take root...

I remember years ago being taken down into the cave where Zeus was born - maybe one day people will be taken up to the lower slopes where Ennis and Jack had their camp. Fictional or mythical, but more real than reality, sometimes.

I suspect that the Mountain in Canada could get a second name in the next few years, owing to its associations with the film.  I actuually have no problem having a Brokeback Mountain designated somewhere in Alberta.  As is usual, places of the mind and the heart reatin the magic no matter what location they get associated with...

Oh!  Very wonderful!  I didn't know about Vermont.  Okay, every state should get its own Brokeback Mountain, then.  Well, I'm sure some states don't want one...

My son (22) moved out with his girlfriend a couple of weeks ago and yesterday i went to watch him and a couple friends play in a softbal tournament. His friends were teasing him about the ole ball and chain and what a short leash she is keeping him on these days.  I just smiled to myself because this of course reminded me of BBM,  "you count the damn few times we've been together in nearly 20 years and you measure the short f*cking leach you keep me on. " i bet i smile everytime i take the dogs for a walk from  now on.

I especially love the way Jack leans against his truck the first time he checks out Ennis in Signal.  And the pose he adopted is a classic -- unforgettable.  :)

I love the leaning -- that's a good "symbol"!  Not just standing, but whenever they're sitting around the fire, too.

How about Jack's lying all stretched out, just comfortable and lazy as can be, napping with the dog, and then playing his harmonica while Ennis is setting up the tent not lookin' right.

And who can forget how Jack leans on the red truck waiting for Ennis at the start of the reunion up the mountains?

The color red is absolutely symbolic here.  He is the image of love aroused...
