And in the long run, Jack being Jack, it probably wouldn't matter if he understood the reasons for it or not. There isn't much he wouldn't forgive Ennis for. That's just the way he loved him.
For a moment in our lives. Forever in our hearts.

The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind. (Mister Rogers)

So true. Jack's love is so strong, so pure.  He doesn't care about his ego -- he will give his everything to Ennis, if only...

Anyway, what does Jack say after Ennis says, "I figured you was sore from that punch" ?

He just kind of mumbles something like no, then tells Ennis he went up to Brokeback that next summer. I think this is his way of telling Ennis" I didn't care about that punch I went back the next summer hoping to find you" Of course Ennis wasn't there I wish he had been

At first it almost seems as if nothing has changed between then and now - indeed they love each other as much as they did, but Ennis has become more deeply set in his matrix and Jack doesn't realize that he's never going to be able to dig him out. The "makin' a livin'" comment is the key, but because Ennis then goes off to the mountains with him, it doesn't sink in. they are happy for such a brief period in this scene.....

I always found this divergence with the short story a good thing as far as the movie was concerned.  It made the significance of the 4 years gradually sink in over a period of a few hours.  On the surface, things seem to look the same, as you have said.
