I love the black and white pictures and thought I'd alter a few of my favourites to go with some of the classic B/W ones, click on any you want to see bigger.

I'm joining him. :) Thanks Tom. O0

This is a really lovely picture. When you hold your child there is such a feeling of love and pride and I think that Stephen is showing that in this picture with his hand on Jake. It's like you want to say, this one's mine! Not in an ownership way, in a proud way.

Hey Rosie.  Yes, this is lovely, how dad is touching son.  Probably his other hand on Jake's back.

It does seem this family is physically affectionate.  Could be why they all seem to be emotionally and otherwise healthy people, kids given lots of physical affection?  (My family growing up wasn't exactly like that, so I feel like I can see a difference.)

I can see part of Stephen in Jake, and part of Stephen in Maggie.

This is luminous <^(

Exactly the word I was looking for...

kathy

Not just his face, but also the sheen of light that pools in the fabric covering his left arm.  The nuacnes in shading are so nice in black and white.

Add his hand in there, too, tpe -- another striking element of this B/W composition.

OMG!

I'm all OMG about this one, too -- but what is it about it??

kathy

The studs, perhaps?  ;)

Oh you are bad.  No, really -- I didn't notice until later that this is in the "stud" series.  I am talking about his face here...  It could be a late-night look, in line with the disheveled formality.  He is finished for the night with being beautiful for the camera, and now just wants some time to be himself.  Perhaps.  I suppose we can read any scenario we would like into some of his photos.

I love the "stud" series of pix (like the ones I posted) because his formal attire is showing signs of disarray.  He is almost perfection in that moment when the formal look is at the point of unraveling and allows his body to "breathe".  :)

Yes!  I love that series, and you caught it in words exactly right.  The formal persona starts to let its hair down...

kathy

Funny that he looks most stunning at the tail end of the evening.  It shows that he has a natural appeal.   He is great in formal attire that shows some elements of informality -- hair in slight disarray, skin glistening from a bit of sweat, shirt a bit rumpled, face a bit flushed with the lines more relaxed...

Thank you, tom (earlier post), but it is this that is perfectly said.  I was trying to say that before, about that stud photo, and this is exactly what I was trying to grasp.  The tail end of the evening, his natural appeal.  (No surprise there -- we know he has that.  No formal wear on Brokeback!)  But also, what you said about his formal persona with a bit of informality.  This is probably like the Japanese design concepts, where an imperfection is included in some exquisite piece of art or home or garden.

OMG, this is mine -- the vision in browns...

kathy

Browns, flesh tones, and a bit of warm gold...  :)

Yes -- he has such warmth in lighting and clothes like this.  As opposed to his more stunning beauty we see sometimes at night in formal wear, or in B/W.

I know.  How many different ways can we say, "My god he is beautiful" ??

Beautiful is he, my God!

&**) HEATH & JAKE!!!!!!!!!!  &**)

Oh!  I love this series so much!  Love them like this, casual, together, during BBM promoting time.  I love how Jake so often is looking at Heath; love when they are looking at each other.

You know that theory I talked about before, about how men often don't put their hand flat on another man when they put their arm around the other man?  Actually, I see Heath frequently do that -- it's seen perhaps as less affectionate if he doesn't rest his entire hand there.  But see in these pictures, Jake has no qualms about putting his whole hand there, and all the little body language signals that signifies...

He is my beautiful God ??

The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.
