Verlaine... Verlaine.. I love Paul Verlaine but of course  I prefer Arthur Rimbaud.  :-*

Il pleure dans mon coeur
Il pleure dans mon coeur
Comme il pleut sur la ville ;
Quelle est cette langueur
Qui pénètre mon coeur ?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie
Par terre et sur les toits !
Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie,
Ô le chant de la pluie !

Il pleure sans raison
Dans ce coeur qui s'écoeure.
Quoi ! nulle trahison ?...
Ce deuil est sans raison.

C'est bien la pire peine
De ne savoir pourquoi
Sans amour et sans haine
Mon coeur a tant de peine !

Ahh, Lost_Girl, you show true poetic feeling! I so love Verlaine (and Rimbaud!)

Thanks everyone for the wonderful pix.  Keep it coming...

Romance (I post it in English, for everybody can understand it.)
I

When you are seventeen you aren't really serious.
- One fine evening, you've had enough of beer and lemonade,
And the rowdy cafes with their dazzling lights !
- You go walking beneath the green lime trees of the promenade.

The lime trees smell good on fine evenings in June !
The air is so soft sometimes, you close your eyelids ;
The wind, full of sounds, - the town's not far away -
Carries odours of vines, and odours of beer...

II

- Then you see a very tiny rag
Of dark blue, framed by a small branch,
Pierced by an unlucky star which is melting away
With soft little shivers, small, perfectly white...

June night ! Seventeen ! - You let yourself get drunk.
The sap is champagne and goes straight to your head...
You are wandering ; you feel a kiss on your lips
Which quivers there like something small and alive...

III

Your mad heart goes Crusoeing through all the romances,
- When, under the light of a pale street lamp,
Passes a young girl with charming little airs,
In the shadow of her father's terrifying stiff collar...

And because you strike her as absurdly naif,
As she trots along in her little ankle boots,
She turns, wide awake, with a brisk movement...
And then cavatinas die on your lips...

IV

You're in love. Taken until the month of August.
You're in love - Your sonnets make Her laugh.
All your friends disappear, you are not quite the thing.
- Then your adored one, one evening, condescends to write to you...!

That evening,... - you go back again to the dazzling cafes,
You ask for beer or for lemonade...
- You are not really serious when you are seventeen
And there are green lime trees on the promenade...

Arthur Rimbaud

Sometime  even more... ! lol  :P

Remember, Body...
« Reply #793 on: Mar 19, 2006, 04:05 PM »

Body, remember not only how much you were loved,
not only the beds on which you lay,
but also those desires which for you
plainly glowed in the eyes,
and trembled in the voice -- and some
chance obstacle made them futile.
Now that all belongs to the past,
it is almost as if you had yielded
to those desires too -- remember,
how they glowed, in the eyes looking at you;
how they trembled in the voice, for you, remember, body.

- Cavafy (Remember, body...)

You love Jake.G... Verlaine and Rimbaud ? lol You're the perfect man !!  :P

Here are the English version:

"Like city's rain, my heart . . ."

Like city's rain, my heart
Rains teardrops too. What now,
This languorous ache, this smart
That pierces, wounds my heart?

Gentle, the sound of rain
Pattering roof and ground!
Ah, for the heart in pain,
Sweet is the sound of rain!

Tears rain-but who knows why?-
And fill my heartsick heart.
No faithless lover's lie? . . .
It mourns, and who knows why?

And nothing pains me so--
With neither love nor hate--
A simply not to know
Why my heart suffers so.

The Farewell
« Reply #796 on: Mar 19, 2006, 04:14 PM »

Lost_Girl, your last post inspired me to repost this poem.  The context is, of course, this pic.

Der Abschied

 Die Sonne scheidet hinter dem Gebirge.
 In alle Täler steigt der Abend nieder
 Mit seinen Schatten, die voll Kühlung sind.
 O sieh!

 Alle Sehnsucht will nun träumen.
 Die müden Menschen gehn heimwärts,
 Um im Schlaf vergeßnes Glück
 Und Jugend neu zu lernen!
 Die Vögel hocken still in ihren Zweigen.
 Die Welt schläft ein!

 Es wehet kühl im Schatten meiner Fichten.
 Ich stehe hier und harre meines Freundes;

 Aufs neu! Allüberall und ewig
 Blauen licht die Fernen!
 Ewig... ewig...

The Farewell

 The sun departs behind the mountains.
 In all the valleys, evening descends
 with its cooling shadows.
 O look! Like a silver boat,
 the moon floats on the blue sky-lake above.
 I feel the fine wind wafting
 behind the dark spruce.

 The brook sings loudly through the darkness.
 The flowers stand out palely in the twilight.
 The earth breathes, full of peace and sleep,
 and all yearning wishes to dream now.
 Weary men go home,
 to learn in sleep
  forgotten happiness and youth.
 The birds crouch silently in their branches.
 The world is asleep!

 It blows coolly in the shadows of my spruce.
 I stand here and wait for my friend;
 I wait to bid him a last farewell.
 I yearn, my friend, at your side
 to enjoy the beauty of this evening.
 Where do you tarry? You leave me alone for so long!
 I wander up and down with my lute,
 on paths swelling with soft grass.
 O beauty! O eternal love - eternal, love-intoxicated world!

 He dismounted and handed him the drink
 of parting. He asked him where
 he would go, and also why it must be.
 He spoke, his voice was choked: My friend,
 on this earth, fortune has not been kind to me!
 Where do I go? I will go, wander in the mountains.
 I seek peace for my lonely heart.
 I wander to find my homeland, my home.
 I will never stray to foreign lands.
 Quiet is my heart, waiting for its hour!

 The dear earth everywhere
 blooms in spring and grows green
 afresh! Everywhere and eternally,
 distant places have blue skies!
 Eternally... eternally...

One of my favorite quote of Arthur Rimbaud.

Elle est retrouvée.
Quoi? - L'Eternité.

It has been found again.
What ?  Eternity.

A Red Rose
« Reply #798 on: Mar 19, 2006, 04:33 PM »

As red as a rose he is to mine eyes... :)

Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Love's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself but thee!

- Ben Jonson

That I shall never look upon thee more
« Reply #801 on: Mar 19, 2006, 04:46 PM »

When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,
Before high-piled books, in charactery,
Hold like rich garners the full ripen'd grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love;--then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.

- Keats

For TPE.
Thanks for all these name, I think I already like it !  :-*

TEARS! tears! tears!
In the night, in solitude, tears;
On the white shore dripping, dripping, suck’d in by the sand;
Tears—not a star shining—all dark and desolate;
Moist tears from the eyes of a muffled head:
—O who is that ghost?—that form in the dark, with tears?
What shapeless lump is that, bent, crouch’d there on the sand?
Streaming tears—sobbing tears—throes, choked with wild cries;
O storm, embodied, rising, careering, with swift steps along the beach;
O wild and dismal night storm, with wind! O belching and desperate!
O shade, so sedate and decorous by day, with calm countenance and regulated pace;
But away, at night, as you fly, none looking—O then the unloosen’d ocean,
Of tears! tears! tears!

Speak now, and I will answer
« Reply #809 on: Mar 19, 2006, 05:41 PM »

From far, from eve and morning
And yon twelve-winded sky,
The stuff of life to knit me
Blew hither: here am I.

Now-- for a breath I tarry
Nor yet disperse apart--
Take my hand quick and tell me,
What have you in your heart.

Speak now, and I will answer;
How shall I help you, say;
Ere to the wind's twelve quarters
I take my endless way.
