I have to say the embrace of Jack and Ennis in the flashback, right after the fight, (like many of the readers) because we see Jack for the last time and his perception of the endless love he shares, for a moment he close his eyes and recline his head while listening to Ennis and in the back we got to see a horse leaning his head. Eyes closed the moment for Jack is almost like a dream, when he opens them Ennis is leaving and the close up of his face says it all! :\'(

Hi so_y2000! And welcome! :)

You put it very beautifully! That is one of the most memorable moments in the movie for we clearly see Jack's early idea of being in love and Ennis's departure on the horse. And it was connected with one of the most difficult parts - the final confrontation, the moment when Jack was again yearning for love and when Ennis also goes away, leaving his little darlin' desperate and hungry of him. Sad and deep indeed!  :(

so_y2000, you describe it almost too vividly here.   :\'(

Thanks for sharing this.  Yes, it is the same with me.  The Dozy Embrace is my favorite scene.  It is probably the most beautifully composed scene in the entire movie -- even though it is set at the heart of the Last Confrontation between Jack and Ennis.

Welcome,so_y2000 ¡  ^f^ Thank you for having put into words so beautifully the feelings that the DE awakes in all of us...Although the scene is not only tender and loving, but also very sad, because we can see the difference between what their love had been and what it had arrived to be... :\'(
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Loreen, tpe and myprivatejack thanks, I have the movie on my lapton and I've seen it more than 10 times! I wish i had the courage then (2006) to watch it in theaters. What breaks my heart is knowing that the last time they parted ways after the fight and even thought Ennis knew, still made an appointment to see each other in November. Jack is the thought, Ennis the action. That scene also prints their true love for each other although is sad; Jack embracing a crying Ennis and remembering that morning when Ennis hold him and Spoke him, that moment, Ennis whispering words to Jack's ear, the warmth of Ennis body and the story he is telling, about his mother, his childhood, Jack always awoke Ennis true self, and made him not a better person, but human; Ennis also knew he meant the world to Jack, that's why he left the bad news for the last day

I've been crying for over a week after seeing this masterpiece I wish I knew how to quit this movie...  :\'(

A bit OT here, but this is very special, Loreen.  I mean, for gay and gay-empathetic people, there was no doubt that we would rush right out and see this movie.  Even though we were in for a big surprise at how much it knocked us down and broke our hearts.  But for you, as you describe yourself to have been in 2006, it is really special that you finally let yourself watch this movie.  And you found the same PBS hit you, also.  And changed your mind about some things.  Which is all good.

Is there a page with all the shorthand?  I've figured a few out but "DE" is throwing me for a loop.

The dream flashback is a good one.  As is the one where Jack hams it up to make Ennis laugh.  But perhaps my favorite is a sequence of scenes from the first postcard and the slight crack in Ennis face to his anxious waiting by the window in his best shirt to Ennis running down the stairs into Jack's arms.  It's the slowly escalating life that sparking in Ennis and bubbling to the surface a little at a time.

Hi jedibarrister...there may be a page with all the shorthand but I don't know where that is, and it took me quite some time to figure it all out, but DE = dozy embrace, as in the final confrontation (FC) scene here Jack has the flashback.

Hope this helps.   ^f^

Kathy, watching the movie was a pure curiosity. And what happened later... well, I guess that when I put everything on my personal balance, human being's pain and sorrow will always prevail... no matter what ( and no matter who is it about). We all have to be more receptive for others' feelings.

That's a beautiful observation, the whole sequence of scenes, as you said -- Jack's postcard sparking some life back into Ennis, for sure!

(The "Reunion" is the shorthand for the scene of Jack's coming to Ennis's place, and the heart-smashing hug and kiss!  Whew!  My favorite.

jedibarrister, here is the thread

min has already answered the DE part.  :) Thanks, min.

DE is my favorite scene because it gives a closure of Ennis and Jack's time in the mountain and the degree of relationship.

That's a beautiful observation, the whole sequence of scenes, as you said -- Jack's postcard sparking some life back into Ennis, for sure!

I love it unfolding: spark to the slightest smile (postcard), the ready lie about fishing buddies since he clearly had wondered how'd he explain Jack to Alma, to the ansty and animated twitching at the window, to the dejected and forelorn state w/ the cigarettes and beer on the sofa, to the explosive smile and the run, two-stairs-at-a-time, into Jack's arms, to the Sierra hotel and the combustible "jouncing" reuinion, and finally, him staring up at the heavens in thanks at bringing Jack back.  That sequence is the best.

It was a wonderful touch: to save a part of their time in BBM close to the end of the movie.  I think the DE gains a lot because of this -- it would not have been as moving had they shown it early on -- back in 63.
