Yes,it's hard to pick up only one favorite scene; even two or three,or more... ??? But I've always liked their life on the mountains;not only,as you say, because they are there like a part of nature in their shelter. But also because they feel and are free as they aren't going to be-and feel somehow-anymore.

so true MPJ  ^f^ The mountains was their home in true sense..Home is where the heart and I feel that most of them belonged to those mountains.I feel that it was the mountains who witnessed their beautiful love and  they connected with that place as they became one there...

I love the SNIT scenes as it shows a beautiful expression of pure and selfless love
Reunion scene is passionate and a burst out of all the emotions of being apart for 4 years
I also love the scene shot on the night of the reunion and that is because Ennis and Jack feel free again after 4 years <^(

The Mountain scenes are certainly the most beautiful in the entire movie -- this includes the wonderful Dozy Embrace, which remains my greatest favorite.

When I watch the Dozy Embrace I go through contrasting emotions..This is because the scene is just after the final Confrontation..so we already r in so much pain and hurt to see what is happening and after that the scene to show us a glimpse of Jack and Ennis feelings long back...I love the scene after the embrace when Jack turns around and watches Ennis ride over the horse and closeup of Jack expression shows him satisfied in true sense...That was a feeling of completeness what Ennis just gave him...nothing and no one can replace that..I love that scene so very much and am very emotionally attached towards it  <^( <^(
After that scene we see Ennis leaving and Jack alone and I cry so much seeing that..those few minutes I am sure we all go through so many emotions at one time...

I absolutely agree with you,Cleo. The Dozy Embrace scene for me is a mix of contrasting emotions,as you say...The fact of putting it right after the confrontation scene-or better said, mixed with this one-makes you feel the contrast between all the hopes, illusions and all senses satisfaction they had in the mountain;and the lack not only of these hopes and illusions, but also almost the lack of a common future and the lack of emotional and, almost, sexual satisfaction in the end.The love full with happiness first and the love full with deception and pain in both scenes Jack's glances. All the things they have lost between these two scenes; definitively,a too heavy burden.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

The interesting thing is that I cry during the Dozy Embrace, and not in the surrounding scenes from the Last Confrontation.  I guess it is because the Dozy Embrace is so beautiful.  The contrast between it and the surrounding scenes could not be any greater.

That is interesting.  We cry during the beautiful sweet scene but not during the tragic scene.

Since I live surrounded by Mts., any of these parts are my fav.  There's nothing in this world like being in the Mts, riding a horse.  Add to that, riding w/ the 1 you love...(that would double the pleasure).  Gonna be Spring before I'm back in the saddle.

Oh, you are so lucky!  I've wanted to live in the mountains since I don't remember when.  They're kind of hard to come by in Minnesota hee hee!

Thanks MPJ ^f^…u have put it very well ….I think what remained in the end was the memories of many treasured moments between Ennis and Jack including the DE…The contrasting emotions that we go through r very painful..I literally cry throughout...Its very hard to see what is happening..Am touched seeing the DE...It is so pure and beautiful....The feelings of love and serene joy the DE has followed by the feeling of almost unbearable pain and hurt that pierced their hearts in the final Confrontataion…I think that is what pains the most and makes us cry our hearts out… :\'( :\'(

I cry at the DE scene as well :\'(...After the final Confrontation I am really overwhelmed by what is happening. I mean how their relationship is turning and how much they r hurting…Immediately after that when the DE is shown there is a mersmerized feeling that I get..I can feel my heart beats...To complement this the background music of DE is so serene and filled with warm love…The DE makes me see the pure love shared between them and there is a soothing emotion what they experience when they r together….Seeing Ennis holding Jack in the midst of nature, mountains and the music playing is a perfect picture of true immortal love <^( <^(…That is simply one of the most beautiful images I have in my mind...there is a joy in my tears at that time….Immediately after that we see Ennis leaving I again come back to the final confrontation and I see how sore and painful things have become. Seeing Ennis leave is made me cry alot  :\'(...

I completely agree with u…Wow....living in a place surrounded my mountains..You r so lucky :)...It’s so peaceful and serene there...The thought of Mountains reminds me of Ennis and Jack...I think I love mountains more because it is a symbol of togetherness and union of Ennis and jack…

Exactly.  I think it is really the great contrast between the DE and the Last Confrontation scenes that gets to me.

I grew up relatively close to both mountains and seas, but I too have always preferred the mountains over the seas (well, at least the former has a "slight" edge!)  This, I think, is one of the reasons why I have a strong liking to the mountain scenes -- especially the early, unclouded ones...

YOu also seem to describe how I feel SO PERFECTLY.  True, I am so overwhelmed by the storm leading to the DE that I am incapable of putting up any defenses when the saidf scene comes up.  In the middle of the storm is that island of peace.  And the music -- the music is so beautiful that it draws you in TOTALLY.  This is not sentimentality or mawkishness.  It is really a response to true beauty.

Thankyou Thomas :). I am glad to know that u felt exactly I same as I did…We don’t need to put any defenses at that time. I know  sometimes we try to avoid the hurt...It’s too strong on the heart. But I think that we need to go through that to understand the ultimate truth which is that that they r soul mates who kept longing for each other..As u have beautifully said, The DE is the island of peace…Even though that scene gives me peace it makes me too emotionally charged and overwhelmed to the core…I think there is an emotion of happiness and calm joy and satisfaction...The beauty makes us cry and makes our hearts so overjoyed. It is a glimpse of what they shared which was so precious to each of them and in the final confrontation what remained is the hurts and years of regret..Although what also remained r those treasured moments that they shared ..The value of those moments can only be understood by them and by us who love both of them so very much…

I think the DE is indeed at the core of understanding the love that they shared.  I think that it is also key to understanding both Jack and Ennis.  And above all, I think perfect love is something like this -- more about contentment rather than about getting everything we want in a relationship.  As I said in another post, it is more about understanding than it is about fulfillment.

DE is all about genuine affection..It shows us that love is a sweet breeze that wipes all tears away..I really feel that after the final confrontation and Jack sees Ennis breaking down, the DE was recollected as that gave Jack a remembrance of a picture of true love shared with Ennis..I think that gave him a totally mixed feeling..firstly a feeling that what a beautiful time(DE) that was mixed with what has happened now..He treasured those memories but also was in full grief as to how their relationship has turned…DE was an image of magnificent and deep love which made them one for eternity... I think that will always be cherished by both of them

I think couples who have shared a lifetime with each other would recognize this "genuine" affection you speak of in the DE.  I would go further to describe it as a comfortable affection.  It is an affection used to silences.  It is expressed and returned in ways that go way beyond words.

Even it's hard to choose one diamond among the others, I'll always like the second night in tent. There is something magical about it. That's first time I saw two men kiss, and I've took it as an extremely erotic for me. It was not a mere physical touching between them, but rather a step foreward after matching their souls in the beauty of the mountain. Jake was a seducer (Seduced me as well in that tent!  ;) ). Ennis was the one whose excitement and acceptance of Jake's sexual love was so Innocent, so pure, that all came so natural for me, even if I did not expect to feel in that way! (t)

The most powerful of course is the reunion kiss, where Ennis was the initiator, and Jack was the shivering boy, who came after his friend and lover but not sure what he'd get. And he got it ALL! Mmmmmm :P <^( (^)

Aww..U said it beautifully loreen ^f^
I loved the SNIT too and if u dont mind then I'll like to say that Jack sedued me too  :)...well he has an effect on all...lol...U know in that SNIT before Ennis came to the tent, Jack was in the tent thinking about him..He was thinking that what will Ennis do now..will he never speak about it ..will he ever accept how he felt or what happened...will he ever love him back now..But when Ennis chose to acknoweldge his love back to Jack, he was so overjoyed..He was so tender with ennis as he knew how constrained Ennis was..he treated him so delicately..I loved that..Ennis felt so safe and comforted..its like only Jack and the mountains knew and actaully understood his love.. <^( <^(

The reuinon scene is my ultimate favourte..all the emotions which they fought for 4 years came out and I loved the way u said that Jack got it all..its so dam true...there would be no end to Jacks happiness ..I mean when he hugged Ennis in the reunion scene, Jack also wanted to kiss him..after they hugged and then that 1 second when they looked at each other , Jack literally is like , "Ennis , kiss me"..He wishes to kiss Ennis but he does not as he dint know what were Ennis feelings at that time....Does ennis still feel the same or just treats him like a friend after 4 years or is he into his married life and does not want to go ahead with Jack as lovers..And finally when Ennis does, OMG there is no boundaries to Jack's happiness and Ennis too was filled with so much love..simply amazing  <^( <^(

Smartestsonia,  :^^),

Yes I think so too! The reunion kiss was the only time when Ennis was the initiator. As someone said - he was grateful for the second chance he's got.

And as I watch movie over and over again, I found this intimate scenes sooo short, so cut off, and I want to be a part of their feelings as mush as possible.

I hope that if Lee's made more intimate scenes, they'll show it one day. Heath, not being here anymore makes those shots priceless.

Exactly!  I remember so well the first time I saw this scene, I was practically WILLING Ennis to just grab Jack and kiss the living daylights out of him - cheering him on, as it were.  I was almost worried that he wouldn't - then when he did, my insides just turned over.  I wanted the kiss to last forever.  I still get the happy shivers over the incredible passion they display in this scene.  It's making me choke up just writing this.  It's literally the happiest part of the movie, and then the roller coaster descent begins....

Thankyou Molly  ^f^......I had read your name some days back on a post..I felt the same...When Ennis did follow his heart that moment Jack was overjoyed and overwhelmed in a passionate way....And what I feel was that the kiss was an indication of a positive start for Jack..That is why he suggested to Ennis for them to live together but then it dint happen..that's what shatters Jack as his hopes dint come true...I wish that the world would come to a standstill when they were kissing..That was one of the most amazing and beautiful kiss of all times...

I think Jack also learned the hard way that often -- to speak his mind out was to antagonize Ennis.  I remember especially the quarrel by the river.  This is why the DE is exceptionally beautiful: in spite of the imprefections in the relationship, he was happy enough to see past through them.  His silence in that scene was very meaningful.

Jack knew that ennis loved him..he knew how Ennis feels but he also knew that Ennis would not speak about his feelings literally...so he just wanted to feel ennis love in the DE...The other way to emote love apart from talking is through gestures and emotions..I think that there was a huger impact in the silence..he could feel Ennis heart beats and could feel his heart surrounded by pure love....I think words were futile at that time because it was too precious and heartfelt for words <^( <^(
