Great to reopen this Twisted.
My fav (surprise) 'cause it shows the boys happy, relaxed, goofing, yet so in love with each other - they just didn't know it yet.
Their body language here is just a prelude to FNIT & SNIT.

jackster , sorry to be a bother, but I can't see the pix just now at the office. Which scene prior to FNIT and SNIT are these pix referring to?

No prob. It's the scene where Ennis takes aims and shoots the elk (re:my avatar). Then Jack "punches" Ennis, "Whoeee, yeah!!", Ennis punches Jack back and he lands on his ass. They both get up joking and laughing "hitting" and touching each other. This is the first real physical contact between them we see where they are both comfortable with each other and each others touch. As opposed to the scene with Jack tending to Ennis's wounded head where Ennis at least is not yet comfortable with another man's touch. That's why I think it's a prelude to their more intimate contact in the tent.

So right, jackster -- I love this goofing around so much. And then the talking and the scene when Jack does the crazy bull-riding. All of this was a prelude to their finally crossing the line...

I love your beautiful description of this scene, FredPtiteFée. I especially love it because English isn't your native language. It's as if you capture the essence of feelings because you have to translate it into another language. Your words capture our feelings in a way we who know English in our sleep may not always get because we are so accustomed to the words. It's hard to describe what I'm trying to say, but I just really appreciate all our non-English-as-native-language speakers. It is like poetry, reading your posts. Thank you.

The scene I prefer the most, besides mountain scenes, is the dozy embrace.
I think that sole scene is a real ( for me, naturally) masterpiece.Nostalgia,melancholia,
lyricism and no sexual affection are shown as a thin, but powerful in the same time,
bond between the two men.So very impressive is also the great contrast between
the two faces of the same person,Jack,drenched of quiet love when young and then bitterly
marked by disillusion near his death.In a few minutes, all his affective life has been shown
us.

I just love love the Passion/Intimacy of this Scene

What Kathy's saying is like describing the difference between a realistic painting, say a still-life, and an impressionist one; the latter has the power to conjure up associations and send one's mind off in all sorts of unpredictable directions, where as the other tends to show you something you know, maybe make you think about it differently, but tends to keep your mind in conventional channels.

I love the reunion scene too, but SNIT has to be my fav. The acting in it is totally exquisite to me. I could watch this all day long and never tire of it. Slo mo is tops here. Ennis entering that tent, hat in hand to surrender himself to Jack and Ennis's eyes as he is admitting to Jack that he wants more of this thing that he cannot put words to Its called love. ... oh my GAWD!, And Jack's suprise at it, the acknowledgement from both that something *real* happened between them in the last hours preceding this. With a few words and a delicious first kiss we see that they "got" each other and so did we.. Excellence personified IMO.

Exactly, WW! The analogy of an impressionistic painting versus some photorealistic one is very apt. And "conventional channels" is exactly the term -- that's what we English speakers' minds do, when reading or hearing English. (Well, it is different with music or poetry or such). That's what our human eyes do, when seeing different styles of representation.

But was not FredPtiteFee's post so beautiful?! It felt indeed like music or poetry. The essence of those feelings lies somewhere between what she said and how we might say it in conventional English. It's the finding of that "somewhere between" that is so fascinating.

Besides, which, FPF, your feelings, aside from how you said them, are beautiful. That scene is so powerful! Beautiful and strong, and full of wild hope.

SNIT = divine. But aside from the entire scene, just one part of it by itself also blows my mind. Just the fact of Ennis going into the tent. In his right mind, fully aware, facing a huge unknown, something totally out of his ordinary experience (except for the night before...except for perhaps his young man's dreams the past years). it just can make me cry, his bravery, doing this over all his fears. At least in that moment, at least during those too-brief months on the mountain, he was living his honest self free of ghosts.

For me (and I suspect, for many of us here), it is probably SNIT, the reunion kiss/embrace, and the Dozy Embrace.

All three can't be measured rationally. They all stand without reference to any other scene. For me, perhaps the Dozy Embrace is my personal favorite. It is probably impossible to say exactly why.

Fascinating! I actually didn't think of it that way when Thomas said those three scenes, that those are Ennis out of his shell -- SNIT tentatively, reunion in wild (with a touch of caution) abandon, DE in this beautiful contentment.

Speaking of DE, that seems more "mature" to me. In other words, not just young boys full of sexual wanting. That's what Jack would have wanted all those 20 years -- a loving companion -- and what Ennis could have had if he'd not been so obsessed with "boys like you" being all wild and dangerous.

Wonderfully said, kathy. Yes, there is a maturity that infuses this scene with a quiet confidence and peace. I think they never came close to this ever after. They probably knew this -- they never came back to BBM.
