I read somewhere in one of the threads that there was a scene cut from the movie, where Jack gets beat up by the rodeo clown and his friends?   I sure am glad that wasn't in the movie.

I wish that Ennis had not said, "Once burned" to Alma."  I thought that this was out of character.   Ennis didn't seem to blame anyone for any of his misfortunes and I found this comment particularly cruel, which I didn't find Ennis to be.  I don't remember if he says this in the story.

If you go to the DID ANYONE FIND IT STRANGE thread they are talking about the "once burned" to Alma scene. Everyone was saying, including me, that it was nasty of him. Then someone brought up how mean it was for Ennis to send Jack away after that long drive (something like 1,000 mi.) the day he was looking after his two daughters.  Ennis wasnt an angel, he didnt have wings like his daughters.

I don't think Ennis was an angel, but he usually didn't lay blame on others.  He only did this when he was angry at Acguirre for ending their summer early.  Although I don't think he was honest about WHY he was angry, the objection he did pose did have merit.  He also says, "It's because of you I"m like this."  In this case I don't hear him really blaming Jack.  It was his love for Jack and his denial of these feelings, that put him in the state he was in.  In these two other cases he is being honest.  With Alma he is not.                                              - Nancy

It feels blasphemous to criticsize any part of this wonderful movie, but...  I agree with an earlier post about the first scene with Jack leaning against his pick-em-up.  It did seem kinda gay to me(not that there's anything wrong with that)  I first saw it in the previews and I thought to myself, NOOOO, they did make a gay cowboy movie.  It still bothers me a little, but it's just a minor thing.  It just looks a little too contrived, I guess.  Didn't keep me from going back to see it 10 times!

Hmm, I hadn't read that. If it's true, I'm glad it wasn't in the movie, as well.

If, indeed, Jack was murdered by someone... could it have been the rodeo clown and his friends that did it?

Look at the credits, there are a killer mechanic, a grease monkey and an assailant, they are not the rodeo clowns.  There is a view of a cut scene with the killer mechanic and the grease monkey in the trailer.

But, isn't that in reference to the scene that Ennis is recalling about the man being murdered when he was 9 years old. I thought that those people, the killer mechanic are the ones that are involved in the murder of that man, not in Jack's murder. But, then again, maybe that flashback we're seeing is actually Jack being murdered and not a flashback to Ennis's story. Whoo, this is a great movie to make you think, isn't it? :)

The scene I wish wasn't in the movie, hmmm, let me think. I would have liked to have not seen Ennis leaving Alma's new place and getting the c*ap kicked out of him. But, honestly, I don't like any scene involving Aguirre after Aguirre discovered what was going on. It gave me chills to watch him when I knew that he knew what Ennis and Jack were doing on BBM.

I don't really know why but I've never liked the scene where Jack tries to pick up the rodeo clown. And I can't find out why it dislike it so much...

You are so right.  Nowhere in the entire movie EXCEPT this scene do I ever ask myself, they are in the middle of nowhere, why can't they be themselves and tell each other the truth. Obviously Jack had a need to tell Ennis about the affair he was having.  Why lie and change the gender?  If you are going to lie, just don't say anything at all.  Then there is no lie.

Patriot1 you have a very good point however Jack was so despaired, maybe he was trying one more (and last?) time to pass some serious message to Ennis?

Coyote:  Let me just affirm to you.  I live in the heart of cowboy-dom in Fort Worth, Texas.  They DO NOT yee-haw, particularly in the fashion that Mr. Gyllenhaal tried so nobly to imitate but fell desperately short.  I concur.  His yee-hawing was not at all a realistic reaction.  I just wonder how many takes Lee made him go through...and finally shook his head and said, "Whatever"  Then again, perhaps Lee doesn't really have much familiarization with how cowboys playfully react....It's the only part of the film that I really do cringe when he does that.

stationbbm

I don't think Jack was trying to be authentic.  He was making fun of the stereotype of the rodeo rider.  He's a cut up, just having fun.  He would never say Yee-haw himself, but was acting crazy to prove Ennis's Pa was right when he said rodeo riders were all .....-ups.

Hands down my least favorite scene is the sledding scene between Alma and Ennis.  They just seem too much in love.  I wanted Ennis to be pining away after Jack.  Yeah, maybe it was included to show Ennis was missing Jack and trying to be playful with Alma, but I thought the scene was unnecessary.  It looked to me like Heath and Michelle were loving on each other instead of playing Ennis and Alma.  Just my 2 cents.  ;)

I honestly can't say I didn't like a scene.  I felt all told the story.  I mean Ennis saying "once burned' fit to me cause
that lead to Alma saying look, I know you loved someone else.  I didn't burn you big fella.

I dislike the scene with Jack and Randall outside the most...not because it isn't a great scene, cause it is, but I dislike it profoundly because that is the BIGGEST threat to Jack and Ennis beeing togheter IMO...

There are three scenes I do not like.

The first is Jack's death.  Except for the first time, I can not watch this.  The first time it came as a surprise and I sat there (in the theater) in shock.  My stomach was churning and I thought for sure I was going to vomit.  Now, I close my eyes, turn my head or cover my eyes.  I can not watch this scene at all.

The second scene is the one in Mexico.  I do not[/b][/i] like this scene and that is that.
I know, there has been a long discussion about it but, no, I don't like it.

The third is when Jack goes to see Ennis after the divorce. What Ennis did to Jack was nearly unforgivable.  I watch it, but I sure don't like it.

Those are my big three.

Snap! I don't like that scene either, probably because, like you say, it just seems rather pointless :-\ (or maybe we've just been spoilt by just about every other scene being so full of meaning? ;))  And I don't know if it's just me, but when Ennis says "y'alright?" to Alma in that scene, he sounds likes he's forgotten to do his accent, it sounds Australian to me ???

Also, he only said it beacuse Alma was suggesting he should get married again, he could hardly say "well, I would get married again...except I'm in love with another man" , could he? Alma had him backed into a corner there. That said, if I was Alma, I would have been furious at him appearing to blame her, bearing in mind what she knows, but that's the thing about this film, you feel so bad for the other characters too, not just Ennis and Jack :'(

I didn't like that one either.  Did anyone else think it was rather classless of Randall to basically proposition Jack for sex an hour or two after they've met? Turned my stomach a little.  Plus, the thought of Randall and Jack . . .grrrr!  No one should be with Jack but Ennis, let alone Grizzly Adams Jr.  ;)
