I don't really dislike any scenes, because all of them are made with a purpose and magnifically made, moreover¡. However,if I had to choose some,I'd be any of them where Ennis shows his violence-that of July the 4th,but also the argument with Alma or the driver...-.Not only for the violence in itself, but because it's a consequence of all the frustration he had inside him and that must be shown in any way.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

LIke MPJ and Matt, I also am hard-pressed to dislike any scene, no matter how sad or crushed the protagonists are.  Even the tire-iron scene -- I suppose I dread it, but I don't dislike it.  I suppose MPJ puts it well: everything had a purpose.  They bring out the right emotions and feelings in us at very specific moments, and the beauty and art of it all is that we connect with all this, no matter how much or in what way they affect us...

the tire scene makes me feel actually ill, i used it in a video once slowed down and nearly threw up afterwards but it has a clear purpose in the film and makes the film more accurate IMO

Same here, but I won't have it any other way.  The violence reaches out to us, and we feel that we ourselves had been violated.

This makes me think back to my first viewing, since I had made it a point to know as little as possible about the story beforehand.  Not only was my heart throbbing with the love story and the beauty of these two men and the beauty of the land...but so many other emotions were brought out in such a raw way -- the shock of FNIT (shock that they were showing this in a "mainstream" movie, not shock for myself), the yucky-potential-danger from Aguirre, the crap Jack had to put up with from LD...and the sickening tire-iron scene.  I felt put through a wringer, that's for sure.  So real, so like life, a full range of circumstances and feelings.

For a long time, one of my least favorite scenes was Ennis bitching at Alma for going to work.  It was the first moment that I didn't like him as a person -- or I mean, I sure wouldn't marry some jerk like that!

But as to the tire-iron scene, I really did think that was just Ennis's vision inside his head, his worst fear.  I didn't think it was real.

Of course, since then, the entire story has taken on so much more meaning.  And I totally agree that every moment was necessary.  (Except I still wonder about the phone call Aguirre gets in the trailer when E and J are there -- I've never really gotten why they would bother with that.)

Uh, Kathy, maybe I'm wrong, but I think that they used that scene to show us that Ennis and Jack had even then, so soon, some interest in each other, or at least, curiosity. Ang used that very moment when Aguirre picks the phone, to let us see the shy way Ennis looks at Jack when he's looking at the floor, and how later it's Jack who looks at Ennis. And I think those little glances are important and have their meaning because they only look at each other when the other one is not looking...
When I saw this scene for the first time I was like "oh....they are LOOKING AT EACH OTHER"; well, I know that everyone would do the same in that situation, but for me it had a deeper meaning. I like that moment. Outside the trailer they only exchanged glances and here inside they are keep doing it, like trying to know who was the other boy just only with the eyes.

I also sympathized with Alma in this scene -- perversely, I sympathized with her here more than during the reunion scene -- perhaps because Alma's distress is balanced by the happiness of Jack and Ennis.

Well, for the record, I also take the tire-iron scene to be real.  It was a necessary scene -- but painful to watch nonetheless.

And I'd also take this scene as an opportunity to show how crotchety Aguirre was. It was pretty clear from the get go that he didn't have any respect for them. Doesn't look like he made a habit of being very cordial to anyone else either.

That makes perfect sense, BT.  I was thinking more of the phone call in itself, instead of as a break for us to see Ennis and Jack's interaction.  I LOVED that, too, the sneaking glances at each other.  <^(

Hope there's not a thread for this allready.

What is the most toughest scene in BBM? I  think that even the happy ones are hard to look at, now, when you will know what will happen.

This is the toughest for me: :\'( :\'(

I have no words to describe how I feel, every time when I see or look at that particular scene. It breaks my heart everytime. :\'(
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

Yes, that scene is very hard to watch  :\'(.

I'm not sure but somehow I feel the dozy embrace flashback is even harder to me. When old Jack watches after Ennis's disappearing trailer and then the director cuts to their summer in  Brokeback, the dozy embrace and Jack's face - both young Jack's and the older Jack's yearning look.

I know, what you mean. That scene is so hard too. I was watching BBM yesterday, it's been awhile since the last view, and I cried like a baby almost in every scene.

Another one is this:

We see Ennis, in pain, maybe feeling sorry, for what he has said to Jack, putting all hope down, and we see Jack, sad, but still calm and comforting Ennis. :\'(

Yes these scenes are hard and yet so beautiful. The more I watch and concentrate on Ennis' character I realize his heart and soul were pretty much always Jack's from the get go. So many things I'm picking up on, his looks, body language, things he's says. Most are subtle but so telling from early on. He had it bad for Jack, this thing, he didn't recognize was love.

Yes this is a heart breaker, Jack's words and Ennis just putting his head down, like he really wanted to respond but didn't know how. I just hope later he gave Jack some good lovin their last night together. That scene in the tent where they are snuggled up in the sleeping bag made me believe he did.  :^^)

Yes, someone had said that perhaps that scene showing them asleep together was supposed to encapsulate Ennis's response.  If viewed this way, then it is not so hard a scene to look at.

Every scene in the movie is important and certain scenes r heart breaking but they r needed to complete the story..
i feel the scene when Jack comes to meet Ennis by a 14 hour drive and Ennis tells him that he cant spend time with him..Jacks heart is broken and he cries in the car..I really feel so bad..am like Ennis could have met him atleast for sometime and then told him to go..that was no not right on the part of Ennis...

Yes,I said something similar at the top of this page; that I didn't dislike any scene because each one of them had a purpose,no matter how hard they were.
As regards to the scene you describe,it's painful because one can see the lack of communication they really have.Ennis hardly groans a shy "Jack..." when his friend is leaving, but neither he insists on it,nor Jack is ready to listening to the phrase's continuation.Perhaps if one of them has spoken or listened then, things would have been different fro that moment onwards... :(
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

One of my least favorite scenes, also.  And you're so right, mpj, that Jack did not have to just turn and leave.  He didn't push it at all, or even just wait and let Ennis come to a different decision...and indeed, things could have been quite different after that.

very true...Jack should have told Ennis that comon i have come so far to meet u and u can just give me some time..he wanted so much to tell this to Ennis....Jack is shaking his tongue and his eyes is looking right at Ennis for answers for his questions but Jack dint say a word...if he just had to say anything i am sure Ennis would have given him some time...here I feel some verbal communication was needed

I wonder myself if things would have been different in that scene had Jack been a bit more insistent.  But I guess he never was that way -- never wanting to push Ennis against his will.  Pehaps he should have...

Yes, this is one of the most painful scenes to watch...

As to the divorce scene, everytime I watch it I wish it would have been different, that an offer to have Jack stay would have been extended or that Jack would've asked/said something. But IMO, there are a lot of dynamics in play here- Jack is greeted with a smile and hug and introduced to the girls, it's after he mentions asking around Riverton that Ennis's demeanor shifts and then the white truck passes by. I think, for Jack's part, he was hit with a lot of things then- feeling foolish for riding up there on a hope and a prayer, then in seeing the white truck realizing that it wasn't Alma or obligations, but rather fear/paranoia that was the albatross. I don't think he could've said anything without breaking down. For as painful as this scene is, it's a pivotal moment of truth, at least to me.
“What Jack remembered and craved in a way he could neither help nor understand was the time that distant summer on Brokeback when Ennis had come up behind him and pulled him close, the silent embrace satisfying some shared and sexless hunger."

It was certainly a great missed opportunity.   It was perhaps a decisive moment in the story.

Yes,in this sense of deciding something about their present and future,I think this is one of the decisive moments in the story. The other, for me,is when they come down from the mountain and nothing is said about what to do after that moment.Everything is said with the eyes, but not with the mouth... :(
