Jack:  She got lucky.

Ennis (jokingly):  Well, if I got lucky, that harmonica would have broken, too!

They both laugh.

New scene.  Jack and Ennis are relaxing in camp.

Jack (singing, while Ennis beats time in the end): "I know I shall meet you on that final day... Water Walkin' Jesus... take me awayyyyyyyyy..."

Ennis beats out an accompaniment to Jack's signing with a stick on the metal coffeepot.
Takes another swig from the whiskey bottle and passes it to Jack.

ENNIS: Very good.

JACK: Ayee yeah, - my momma, she believes in the Pentecost.

ENNIS: Oh yeah?

Ennis: (passes the bottle back to Jack and casually pokes the fire with a stick)

What exactly is the Pentecost?  I mean, . . . my folks they, they wus Methodists.

Jack:  Well, the Pentecost....  Jack stops and looks confused, then continues: I don't know what the Pentcost is.  Mama never explained it. Another pause:  I guess it's when the world ends and fellows like you and me march off to Hell.

ENNIS with his best sh*t eatin' sly grin, smiles at Jack and says:

Speak for yurself. You may be a sinner, but I ain't yet had the opportunity.

JACK nods at Ennis for sharing this bit of very personal information,
I think he says "Hmmm. . . . " and passes Ennis the bottle almost in the manner of a toast.
Ennis receptively takes the bottle, says-

ENNIS: Thank you.

New Scene.  The same location in camp, but it is now very late into the night.  Ennis is still with Jack...  Ennis and Jack are quite drunk (Ennis more so, it seems).

Ennis (to Jack): Shit. (He throws the empty bottle.  He evidently tries to rise but is unsuccessful.)   I'm..  I'm gonna go up to the sheep now...

Jack: Give 'em Hell!

Jack gets up slowly and walks to the tent for a blanket.  He brings the blanket back and tosses it to Ennis saying:  you'll freeze your a*s  off once that fire dies down....better off sleeping in the tent...

Ennis (flippantly): Yeah...

He proceeds to ignore Jack's suggestion and goes to sleep after covering himself with the blanket.

Jack: Alright...

New scene, later that night. Camp fire dies down, coldness descends. Ennis, with only his blanket, chills (as Jack had warned), shivers, puffs, teeth chatter as he tries to keep warm. Wakes Jack with his snorting . . . annoyed, Jack opens the tent flap, yells . . .

JACK: ENNIS!

ENNIS: Whut?

JACK: Jus quit your hammerin' an' get in here!

Ennis sleepily get up, grabs his blanket, staggers to the tent knocking pot and pans on his way. Jack (cleverly?) scoots over, giving Ennis some room to lie down in the tent on Jack's right hand side. Then as Annie says "and in a little while they deepened their intimacy considerably."

Later, in the tent, Ennis is sleeping on his back.  Jack is lying next to Ennis, his back to Ennis.  Jack reaches behind him and 'seizes Ennis' left hand and brought it to his erect c*ck' .

Ennis starts, then comes fully awake.  He looks puzzled for a second, then he realizes where he is and where his hand is and he 'jerked his hand away as though he touched fire.'

Ennis on his knees, is backed up against the tent flap.  Jack gets on his knees and moves toward Ennis.  Ennis grabs Jack by his shoulders.  Jack grabs Ennis.

Ennis, confused, says:  What are you doing?

Jack moves closer to Ennis until their foreheads are touching.  Jack pulls back and makes eye contact with Ennis.  Jack suddenly lets go of Ennis and  quickly takes off his jacket then begins unbuckling his belt and pants.

Jack [probably] attempts to kiss Ennis, but both seem locked in the grip of uncertainty.  Each one hold the face of the other, unsure what to do next...

Suddenly, with seeimg resolve, Ennis flips Jack and proceeds to undo his own belt/pants.  He pulls Jack's pants down, lubricates himself with his own spittle, and commences penetration.

from the SS

. . . . nothing he'd done before, but no instruction manual needed. They went at it in silence except for a few sharp intakes of breath and Jack's choked "Gun's goin off," then out, down, and asleep.

Ennis woke in red dawn with his pants around his knees, a top grade headache, and Jack butted against him.

Ennis sits up and rubs his eyes.  He looks around, unsure of where he is.  He sees Jack lying beside him.   Ennis, still sitting, pulls up his pants and crawls out of the tent.

New scene.  Ennis is outside the tent, getting ready to depart -- without waiting for breakfast.  Jack comes out of the tent, looking a bit uncertain as he watches Ennis prepare to depart.

Jack:  See you for supper.

Ennis, looking uncomfortable, nods his head silently at Jack then rides away.

Ennis rides up the mountain toward where the woolies are pastured.  He hears a dog barking and spurs his horse into a light gallop.  When he reached the barking dog, he sees a dead sheep, clearly the victim of a coyote.

Ennis looks distressed.

Ennis looks distressed because he feels guilty.

When he returned to the camp he says to Jack :

- "What was happened this night it's one time only"

New scene:  Jack has ridden up to where the woolies are pastured.  He is lying on the ground looking at the sheep.  Ennis walks up, stands near Jack without looking at him, then drops down and squats on his heels.

Without turning his head, Ennis gives Jack a quick glance then says:  It's a one-shot thing we got going here.

Jack:  It's nobody's business but ours.

Ennis:  You know I ain't queer.

Jack gives Ennis a quick glance, then says slowly: Me neither.

Both continue to stare at the sheep in silence.

New scene:  It's dark, Ennis sits alone in front of the fire, Jack is inside the tent.  We see Jack is rustling around, getting ready for bed.

Ennis looks over at the tent, makes a decision, gets up, and goes over to the tent.

New scene.  Inside the tent.  Jack is lying down inside the tent, shirt off.  He eyes Ennis as the latter enters the tent.  Ennis kneels before him, hat in hand.  Jack takes the hat and sets it aside.  He caresses Ennis and they kiss.

Jack: I'm sorry...  (He cradles Ennis in his arms)  Lie back...  Come on...

Ennis lays his head on jack's chest as Jack makes a slightly rocking motion.

They make love.

New Scene.  In camp.  Jack and Ennis are horsing around.  They embrace and fall to the ground.  They kiss...  They...

All the while, Aguirre spies both of them through his binoculars...

New scene:  In camp. Ennis has gone up to the sheep.   Jack is chopping wood.  Joe Aguirre rides up on his horse and 'fixes Jack with his bold stare."

Joe:  Twist, your Uncle Harold's in the hospital with pneumonia.  Docs don't expect he'll make it.  Aguirre pauses for a moment, then continues:  You ma sent me to tell you...so here I am.

Aguirre (coldly):  Ain't nothing you can do about down there neither, not unless you can cure pneumonia.

Aguirre gives Jack a cold look.  Then Aguirre lifts his binoculars to his eyes and looks toward where the woolies are pastured and sees Ennis riding his horse.  Aguirre lowers his binoculars and gives Jack another cold look, then turns and rides off.

Jack also looks up the mountain towards Ennis, where Aguirre was just lookin', pauses for a moment in thought, wondering what else Augirre's been lookin' at with his "big ass pair a binoculars".

As Augirre rides off Jack goes back to splitting wood.

Ennis and Jack look through the tent flap at the hailstorm.  Ennis (worried):  Them sheep'll drift if I don't get back up there tonight.
