In that scene, you really sense that they were very comfortable with each other.  They were talking about serious things in that scene, too.  But overall, the feeling is light and open.  :)

Yes, I think this was a critical point, as you say here.  Some people have even noted that Ennis's last reply to jack in this scene was kind of a subconscious invitation.  The FNIT scenes followed, no?
