I loved the actor commentary on the LOTR EE dvd's- I'd love one for BBM. &**)LJN, did you listen to the one by Jake and Dustin Hoffman on Moonlight Mile? The two of them together were hysterical. :)
I just hope it isn't the rehash of the "special editions" already released in France and Taiwan...
I really hope there is a Ang Lee commentary. I'm a big fan of dvd commentary tracks, and Ang's have been the most satisfying. CTFD became a whole new movie because of his commentaryErmmm.. what - CTFD - stand for??
TY! greenfrog.. ^f^

Jake also did commentary on the Bubble Boy DVD with the director. :)
I just love Jake's enthusiasm about film making. That he totally loves working in film making is mmediately obvious. He is such a delightful change from the jaded Hollywood types who try to act all blase about the whole process. <^(
Can you imagine, if we get Ang AND Jake talking about the film, scene by scene! I'm keeping fingers and toes crossed.
Has anyone ever heard Heath doing something similar? I know he's more reticent in some ways than the others, but he is wonderfully articulate and insightful when he does speak. Just think of the discussions we would have on ej after listening to both Jake and Heath discuss their own impressions and interpretations of every scene!
Once again..Im last to know..I created a similar thread in the news section..I guess Ill have to merge it to the news one instead. It is actually already in the 'News for October' thread hun ;)
I am just drooling wondering about the "never before seen footage" - will we get to see the hippie scene? And how about the few extra moments with the shirts? Maybe even see Ennis in the PJ's that Ethan got ;) I'm sure we'll have lots to talk about when it is released. ;D Wonder if a similar package will be released in UK/Europe anytime soon. If not, our Euro Brokies will need to get a region 1/NTSC DVD player!
OMG, I can't believe it!!!
and just as I was begining to think I'd never live to see the day...... :c)
but uhm....there's one thing I don't get- what's gonna be on the second disc? I mean, technical information? WTF?
This is great news - i can hardly wait. And about time too!! Thanks for the info Jennis, you're a star!!I'm praying for all the tentlove outtakes of course. And hopefully i will find out why Randy Quaid needed a stunt double? :8

Seb, I thought they said it includes never-before seen scenes? I interpret this to mean deleted! :)
look at my previous post
From the Universal Pictures webpage:
With all-new bonus features, never-before-seen footage and highly collectible postcards
Now that the initial happiness has taken residence in my mind, I am starting to wonder if they will change the cover art, or just add the words "COLLECTOR'S EDITION" to it? I also am wondering what the second DVD is going to look like. My DVD has the picture from the cover and posters, but I wonder if the new, second DVD will have something different or if it will just have "Disc 1" and "Disc 2".
Don't mind me. I'm a graphics artist so I tend to wonder and analyze things like this for ages.
Does someone know if it will released at the same time worldwide? I couldn't find any reference on the French Amazon webpage.Chameau, they have only mentioned the U.S. so far.

Hey Carbyville, you can wonder and analyze as long as you like, I'm wondering about the same thing! Well, that and what the extra scenes will be, and if there's going to be audio commentary, and what the postcards will have on them...you know, usual stuff like that!
I think it would be great to have a new cover, wouldnt it? Make it more special.
Carbyville, the BBM artwork is actually a mimic of the Titanic one :)
I hope we get a new cover though.Be an extra bonus ;)

Yeah, the posters were. But it's a whole new ballgame when comparing the DVD's artwork and movie descriptions on the back.

Jack and Ennis's relationship is described as "a life long connection". Spare me. I've formed a life long connection with my dog but nobody has made a movie about that. On the Titanic DVD almost right off the bat it says "the sweeping love story". Makes me mad. ^*)
If anything I'd like the US DVD to recognize Jack and Ennis's relationship as love as opposed to calling it "a life long connection".
As for extra footage and the postcards, the anticipation is killing me but I'd also like to wait until I get the new DVD to find out as opposed to being spoiled. Gives me more anticipation when I don't know what is coming. ;)
I dont mean to laugh about something serious, but your comment about your dog cracked me up! ;D
Seriously though, I totally agree about the way the word love is avoided just cos its two men! Hello, what century are we living in? ^*()
And as for the extra stuff and postcards, I am going to try my hardest not to look at anything that may be posted regarding extra scenes, etc. I mean, I may have to give in and find out what the scenes are, but I am definitely not going to look at them until I have my own DVD in my own hands.
FYI sometimes "collector's editions" are released in certain countries and not others. I've purchased DVD's that are "special editions" meant for the European market which are not available in the States. Hopefully, they will release this collector's edition in other countries as well, or non-US/Canada brokies will have to get a multiregion/multistandard DVD to play this DVD
I swear my excitement and anticipation for the unseen footage parallels my initial excitement of watching BBM in the theaters for the 2nd or 3rd time ;D
Same here and really, I'm not even asking for that. Just that they clearly define what the movie is about, instead of going around it with terms like "lifelong connection". What's so hard about using the word "love"? I just double checked my DVD to make sure that love was not used at all and I was right. The tagline "love is a force of nature" isn't even anywhere to be found. They should definitely work on that for the release of this collector's edition.

Most definitely. I'm not sure how much different the art is on the DVD in other countries, but I know here in the states it was very bland. Bland in the sense that, when compared with my Titanic DVD for example you'd never know that Jack and Ennis fall in love but you sure as heck know that Jack and Rose fall in love by the description and art on the Titanic DVD.
Jack and Ennis's relationship is described as "a life long connection". Spare me. I've formed a life long connection with my dog but nobody has made a movie about that. On the Titanic DVD almost right off the bat it says "the sweeping love story". Makes me mad. ^*)

[ ;D You can laugh, it was meant to be funny!
I, too am going to try really hard to not be spoiled. I am even considering not finding out what the scenes are, which I know for me is going to be really hard to do because I'm extremely impatient, especially with something like that. I love that there is finally going to be a whole second disc dedicated to extra features for this movie. ^f^
My DVD (which is the UK one) mentions the word "love" twice, "...an epic American love story(...)whose complications, joys, and tragedies provide a testament to the endurance and power of love."
Is it allowed to say who you pre-ordered it from, without posting a link? (You know we have a rule about no links to commercial sites that may not be "official" Focus Features sites.) If not okay to say outright or link, you can PM me?

Thanks Jennis!!! OMG I will have to get a HD DVD player just to play BBM. I always thought that HD DVD is "better" than Blu-Ray due to the fact that HD encoded discs use a better MPEG2 codec than Blu-Ray even though the latter can hold more GB's of info. ;D (Similar to the VHS vs. Beta debate...)

;D Kathy. You have just done what I did. A long bitching session (about technology and various editions) ending with how you cannot wait to get the De-Lux version!
Arn't we daft!
Hi Kathy.
Please make sure you have a full backup of all your data onto RRCDs or to an external hard-drive.
Because:
1. If disaster stikes you would loose it all &
2. A lot of stuff is now vanishing from the internet. You are in a way keeping it safe for us all.
Oh, AR-OC type that I am, I have back-ups and back-ups of back-ups. I need to update soon though -- every day more treasures. I have an external hard drive, besides CD's and DVD's.
Then there is only one more thing you can do. Keep a copy at a separate location. In the event of fire, flood or theft you will still have copies of your treasure.
What is a AR-OC type?
kathy - i can empathise. I have discs here, discs there, discs everywhere. I'm guessing (because i am one of those creatures too) AR-OC is Anally retentive-Obssessive compulsive. I would quite literally die if my BBM stuff got wiped and no back ups. :)
Oh. Thanks Aimi for clearing up the AR-OC mistery. I had quessd the OC part correctly.
(Really, the language you Americans use! ;))
Edmund Paul Charnley, Baron of Ree.
LOL. I'm actually requesting one as a Xmas gift. Gone are the days when i was begging for perfume and new shoes, now give me new hardware and i'm a happy gal!! :)kathy - i can empathise. Get yourself one of the external hard drives, so you don't have to write things onto CD's and/or DVD's. It's so much easier, and mine is 120 GB.

I sincerely apologize. Sometimes I forget what the topic is even...and sometimes you darling mods let us get away with a little too much. (^) I will try to be more attentive to topic. :-[

I don't think any *deleted scene* would be dull in the case of BBM ;) ;D
Didn't mean the scenes would be dull..just the placement of them.. Will they be a post on the extras or will they do like the excellent Peter Jackson did for LOTR and Ron Howard has now done for Da vinci code and integrated them into the film, so the film itself will be longer :)
Didn't mean the scenes would be dull
THe way her nails look she don't spend as much as 6 minutes on them
Might not be new scenes, could be LONGER scenes already in the film, like when Ennis finds the shirts
Interesting -- I never thought of "deleted scenes" being put back into the movie where they would have been, as opposed to having them just on separate features DVD. As you said, Esme, about Jackson and Howard doing for LOTR and DVC. Cool.
kathy
Didn't mean the scenes would be dull
It might be six minutes of Lureen doing her nails. Riveting! :8
Scenes were removed after the initial release. There is no doubt about that. Thousands saw them, yet when they went back for a second time some scenes had been cut. Yet the theatre trailer still has clues to these scenes. The running time of the DeLux vertion seems to be 6 minutes longer.
My guess is the film will be slightly longer and the second disc will have other material that was not included. But no one will know until January
So, okay, that would be cool, a longer version and other "unusued" scenes, as opposed to deleted scenes.
kathy
Of course nothing about this is chance. The initial release, then recall of the reels to recut the film but leave the trailer, (or to exchange them at a pre-agreed moment) then the DVD, then the DVD de-lux version. A high deffinition release will follow.
The two audio CD's, the book to screenplay (which may also need an update to get it back to the original). All clever marketing. We are getting our roses stemmed! I really don't care. I just cannot get enough BBM and cannot wait for products once they are available!
&**)
Anyway, that's what fans are for :) We make them money, and they better be good to us!
kathy

Hehe...reading some discussions on imbd right now and most people seem hung up on the fact that the info doesn't say deleted scenes or, funnily enough this ticks them off most, no commentairy....We do know there will be unseen footage as Universal have stated it.That reviewer has probably not even seen it or is watching some bootleg disc. The specs are all wrong.I don't think it relates to the collectors edition even though he says it does ::)
We wont know whats on it until it's here tho...
Oh i see :)

Hm... might be the running time of the extras disc???
Maybe it's an extra minute of unseen footage ::)...It says running time of 2hrs 15 mins as opposed to the original 2hrs 14 mins.Surely the unseen footage cannot just be a whole 60 seconds worth? But there is also bonus material on disc 1 so that must be the unseen stuff i reckon ;)

I just hope that the "never before seen footage" isn't the new featurettes, and that those menus are tentative... I would be enormously disappointed if that was the case. I can't believe Universal would allow a ripoff like this especially when they know there are diehard fans like us.... ^*)
The Universal site has already lowered the preorder price of the DVD - maybe they realized that this collectors edition is nothing more than a few extra stills and a rehash of previous featurettes and couldn't charge the initial 23.95 for it. The least we're asking for are some deleted scenes, and a commentary. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ^*) I hope we're all wrong about this!

I highly doubt the review is credible. The reviewer is from India, for god's sake, and how in the world would he have the inside knowledge of what's in Disc 2 when the official Universal Studios page doesn't even have the specifics available yet? ^^)

Sent my email off this morning :)
I sent them this letter:
Greetings.
A review posted on Amazon.com for the Collectors Edition of BBM (slated to be available on January 2007) has alerted me and many fans on the deficiencies of the said edition. Specifically, it seems that there is very little additional material relative to the original DVD release. Also, no deleted scenes are included, and no commentary is available.
I urge you to address these deficiencies if there is yet time. I, for one, would be greatly disappointed if the Amazon review turns out to be accurate.
I have loved and enjoyed this film from the onset -- loved it enough to spend about 7000.00 USD on BBM-related material and on original film props at the various auctions. This film has attracted a faithful and very discerning following. I trust that you will not disappoint us.
I sent them this letter:
carbyville, I received the exact same reply just now...
Canned response. We could have guessed that. We'll see if anything is actually done, I guess.
carbyville, I received the exact same reply just now...
Thanks Saul and : carbyville.
I haven't gotten my canned response yet. ;)

carbyville., I do think the canned response has a positive side to it. They must have gotten so much email about this that it required a canned message!!!!! :)

That's my outlook, too. Number one priority is sales, can't deny that. If they get enough concerned emails from fans stating they are disappointed with their product and will not be buying it, it is very possible that they will look to redeem themselves. We just need to keep at it one way or another, perhaps by sending follow up emails asking for the status of our inquiries or something like that. Don't let them forget about us!

Not to be a fly in the ointment....on the forum we are true BBM fans, but a lot of people have not seen BBM (many more people HAVE NOT seen BBM than have seen it). I personally know a lot of people who wouldn't go to the movie theater or even rent BBM.
BBM has been on Pay-Per-View in the States, now, however, in the States, BBM will be shown on regular cable television by the end of this year. A lot of people who wouldn't see the movie in the theater will now be able to watch it in the comfort/privacy of their homes without anyone knowing. And, A LOT of new BBM fans will be born. I think that those are the ones that the Collector's DVD will be targeting.
One good thing will come from BBM being on regular cable and the release of the new Collector's DVD, MORE new people will find this forum.
Today I heard that fans of Lord of the Rings (not my cup of tea) are getting a special DVD release with a whopping 4 1/2 hours of new material!
Now this is the business. Surely they could put something together for u BBM fans too.

whoo hoo!!! Totally off topic but &**)
Now back to topic:
I got The same response from them- the subject line of the email was weird: RE: Brokeback Mountain Collector - Please rethink Inquiry # 61647 Please rethink what? :s)
mine says: RE: Brokeback Mountain Collector - Negative talk Inquiry # 61494
I should send them another one just to see what fortune cookie reply subject I get back.
I think they may be categorizing them- negative reaction to collectors editon; wants more; and mine may mean for them to rethink the edition they are putting out? I told them I already own 4 copies of the original and what I would like to see and even if they gave us deleted scenes now and different bonus features and later on decided to come out with an ultimate DVD or an extended edition of the film that the Brokie faithful would buy it. I also informed them that they missed the boat on not putting out merchandise for us to collect. :)
I was looking at the numbers from the subject lines. Is it possible they got 61,000+ messages? ;D I doubt it but if they started the numbering with 61 (perhaps for BBM?) and then added the number of the reply we are at over 600. Does that make any sense? ;D
mine says: RE: Brokeback Mountain Collector - Negative talk Inquiry # 61494

Don't know if this has been posted, but to what address do I send this e-mail to?
I got the same reply as you, Jennis.Yes,they are taking the hint that we can't choose a country as there are none but the U.S. to choose from.I will contact the London office next and see what they say.Are you doing the same hun?
Yep...will do it once I'm back at work since my printer here isn't working!! Damned annoying that there's not an email address for their London office.I thought that, but then again it will have the added advantage in that they have to send us a letter by post about the BBM dvd :)
Da Vinci did not release his sketches of the Mona Lisa.
Depends on the artist... Ang Lee is noted on set for running a "tight shoot" BBM was on extremely tight budget..especially the location shots in Alberta...there was just not alot of time or $$ for indulgence of 'extra footage" check out DVD of "Crouching Tiger" no deleted scene's.. with Ang the final cut is the final cut... I think some of us are looking for footage that will never see the light of day or just dosen't exsist... as for commentary.. Ang is notoriously reticent.. as the cast joked getting him to "talk" is like pulling teeth his film speaks for him.. Heath has said all he intends to say (also hates interviews).. that leaves Jake.. well we can always hope for the 25th anniversary edition ;)This is true, but we do know there is 40 minutes worth of deleted scenes,so a few minutes worth of that on the dvd would be nice. :)
I've written to the London office and sent an e-mail to the US office as well, it can't hurt to pester as many people as possible ;)My letter went in the post today.Hope we get a response soon and some news of a U.K release :)
On the positive side, I suppose if they're asking those of us in th UK to write to London office, it means that it will definitely be released here as well. I said in my letter/e-mail that I wouldn't be buying it if it didn't have deleted scenes, commentary, etc, but fool that I am, I probably will end up buying it anyway (I wasn't going to tell them that though!) ::)
I too was disapointed when I learned there was to be nothing new in the new "Deluxe DVD". However I was not surprised. I was lucky enough to see the film in a pre-release industry screening 23 Nov 2005.. the film we saw was exactly the same film released 09 Dec 2005 and on DVD 04 Apr 2006. The reason is obvious Mr Ang Lee. He created a masterpiece. Da Vinci did not release his sketches of the Mona Lisa. The only "deleted" scenes I know of were: the hippie rescue.. Jack drops off Randal in front of the killer mechanics.. Jack and Ennis in the truck cab...all were removed by Ang in final edit spring 2005.. in my humble opinion they would not add one jot to the film. Brookies do you really want to see Jack embracing Randal ! :-\\.. not me...lets leave the masterpiece as it was intended ..framed in our hearts :)
I got a letter today from Universal, but it wasn't really much help :(
"We appreciate your concern regarding the Collector's Edition of Brokeback Mountain. Unfortunately, however, Universal does not own the rights to Brokeback Mountain in the UK. We believe that Entertainment In Video owns the DVD rights.

I would've thought Universal would have known that there was a different distributor for the DVD over here :-\\
I did a search for EIV, couldn't find an e-mail address, just a postal address:
Entertainment In Video Ltd
Eagle House
108-110 Jermyn St
London SW1Y 6HB
So it's back to the drawing board then ::) I'll send my letter to them tomorrow :)
I got a letter today from Universal, but it wasn't really much help :(Mmm,i haven't received a reply yet but it sounds like they are giving us the run around. :X
"We appreciate your concern regarding the Collector's Edition of Brokeback Mountain. Unfortunately, however, Universal does not own the rights to Brokeback Mountain in the UK. We believe that Entertainment In Video owns the DVD rights.

I was thinking about starting an online petition for this situation. Not so much as a demand for a better version, but for some answers in regards to it. Anyone think this is a good idea? I can start the petition and I don't know how many signatures we'll need to make it valid or anything, but I can print it out and mail it to both Universal and Entertainment In Video. If anyone would be willing to help me out with this, PM me and we will talk it over.I'm willing to sign it hun :)I could make a petiton button to add to your signatures if the forum allows it.It would be clickable and take anyone who wanted to sign it straight to the page.If you set it up,i will make the button. If it's not allowed on here,we can use it around the net maybe?Just an idea :)

I'll sign it too. :)
Update on the petition. I am in the process of writing the petition statement. If there is anything that any of you would like me to add to it, please let me know! I want all of our voices to be heard :ghug:I don't know what you have written so far but just what we all want really and that is a fair deal when it comes to them producing a so called deluxe collectors edition which by the looks of it is not very different from the original. We are not concerned with postcards and freebies, just some deleted footage as extras. As we have supported the film since the beginning and we are still doing so then to reward us with a collectors edition dvd is wonderful, but not if it's the same as what we already have.

Thank You, Jennis! I've used a lot of what you said :^^)
Alright, folks. I've created the petition and have provided the first signature. I would love it if you all signed it and spread the word about it, as well. Thanks!I am just going to have a look now.I will sign it and make you a petition button in a minute. If the forum lets you/anyone add it as their signature it will be seen on every thread every time we post and hopefully encourage folks to sign.I was also reading that there will be never before seen footage on the dvd?Mmm?That must be deleted scenes of some kind surely? It's odd that the people who have viewed this dvd already did not mention it though?

Like my petition ID? ;D
I signed the petition O0 I didn't add any comments though.
Thanks everyone. I am going to get it circulating around LiveJournal in a few minutes, here (in between Nip/Tuck commercial breaks ;D). I hope this petition really takes off. Jennis, I love the button and I'll definitely put it in my signature if it is allowed. It's not hun,so i'm going to take it down in a minute but you are welcome to have it for LJ or anywhere else you might want to get the petition noticed?PM me if you want it and i will send you the code to use ;)

Hello all :)
I am new poster on this forum.
I live in England, and like many of you I have recently filled in the online form at Universal Studios to complain about the disappointing content of the "Collector's" edition of the upcoming DVD.
And I have received the same standard answer as Jennis.
So Universal does not even provide a UK-based email address.
I really wonder how can such an international media company not have a system to redirect enquiries from people resident outside the US internally to the appropriate department?
Perhaps it's got to do with the fact that the "Collector's" edition may just be planned for release in the US.
Here's what I wrote to Universal:
Dear Universal Studios,
I am very disappointed at reading the programme you are planning to include in the January edition of Brokeback Mountain DVD.
To consider this DVD a proper "collector's" edition, I would have expected at least an Audio Commentary (by the Director or one of the Actors), some interviews with cast and crew (for example at official awards, such as the Venice Film Festival, which the film won), or with the short story writer Annie Proulx.
Much lesser films are released on DVD with Audio Commentaries, so why not this one, the "most acclaimed movie of 2005" and one which has impacted the lives of many viewers around the globe?
It really seems like a wasted opportunity.
I am also disappointed you are going to include again the "Sharing the Story: The Making of Brokeback Mountain" documentary, which had already been distributed by Logo Online before the release of the first DVD. So it was nothing new the first time.
Please give deeper consideration to the content of the new DVD: I am astonished that Focus Features and the other producers of this wonderful film would allow the release of this disappointing DVD. It really doesn't do justice to the movie.
Including really interesting and new features/featurettes would gain you not only better sales, but also the respect of viewers alike.
Thanks for your attention.
Best regards.

i hope they keep listening.. i want the DELETED SCENES.. just gimme those and im happy.. PLEASEEEEEEEE I NEED MORE BBM haha
P/S. Presumably Ang usually doesn't do commentaries for his movies, so it would be quite a feat for him to do this...
Sad.... Why release another edition when the additions are "miniscule"?Yeah,i find it odd that it's listed as having unseen footage but according to JS no deleted scenes?Isn't unseen footage stuff they didn't use?JS also says ''they'' wanted to put in deleted scenes.I guess by ''they'' he means the dvd distributors/Focus?So is it Ang that is holding back on giving the go ahead for the deleted stuff?
I won't be buying it on principle :X At least not at the full price, I might once it's reduced to clear cause no-one else is buying it either ;) Then again, I might not have the option, because we still don't know for sure if or when it's being released in the UK. I wrote to Entertainment In Video weeks ago, and they haven't had the courtesy to reply :XSame here.No reply as yet.If the changes are minuscule according to what JS said then it's hardly a directors cut/deluxe edition is it.What a pity. :(
Ditto!!!
We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes! We want deleted scenes!...
I feel we will get some of the deleted scenes at some point, if not all, but not at this stage. Maybe with the HDDVD/Bluray version which is sure to appear. For every pixel you have on the curent DVD, you get four in HD. Personally I would spend on a HDDVD player and TV just to see BBM!

Hi DirtBiker,
Has BBM already been released in HD?
The HD-DVD version has the standard DVD on the other side of the disc. It's also listed as a "collector's" edition so maybe it'll have the same commentary on this one too.

It looks hopefull. Fingers and toes crossed. Will this version also be in HD? Or will just the regular version be released in HD on the same date. You see, I was thinking we could hire a HDTV & DVD player for the next European get-together.
Aye, that's the version that playusa and cd-wow are showing details of too...looks like the "collectors" edition is actually the HD version, with the normal DVD version on it too (something called a "combi" version apparently)
So the new version will be in HD? Fingers crossed - I just got a new HD TV!
Um, hate to burst your bubble boo_boo, but to play an HD-DVD disc, you need a player which costs $500-1000 at this time... :-\\
Darn, darn, darn. >:( Wonder if I can beg my husband to go buy one? I did get to watch BBM on HD thru HBO though. It was much clearer than the DVD.
Universal's website says it has deleted scenes so I'm hoping they are correct.

I watched it on HD & you are right - the scenery is breathtakingly clear. Sadly, you are right about the bad makeup being more noticeable. I kept noticing the wrinkled skin around Ennis' eyes near the end & their sideburns.
I watched it on HD & you are right - the scenery is breathtakingly clear.
Did you mannage to get a sneaky pre-release version of the HDDVD then?
No - I wish! HBO showed it in high-def a few weeks back & I watched it and also recorded it. It's much more detailed than the DVD I have.
I see. I can't get that in Europe. Lucky you!
Do you have a HD DVD recorder, or a hard-disk or something?
Don't ask me! ::) My husband is in charge of the home entertainment unit! I just tell him what I want recorded & he does it!
This reminds me of the British Queen Mother when she was given a TV with a remote control for the first time in the 70's. She reportedly said "I think I'll still just ring the bell when I want to see a different channel!"
Ask your husband it you have BBM recorded in HD. If you do you are one of a very few at this time!
I asked my husband & he says yes, it is recorded in HD but it takes up a lot of space so we can't record a lot that way. No way is my BBM getting deleted though!
HOw many of you have pre-ordered the DVD as opposed to picking it up at your local retail store?
HOw many of you have pre-ordered the DVD as opposed to picking it up at your local retail store?
How many of you have pre-ordered the DVD as opposed to picking it up at your local retail store?
I don't usually buy DVDs - wait for HBO, but I pre-ordered this one. I taped it, but want all the extras. I think if there are going to be any deleted scenes, it will be on the Collectors' DVD - I paid a little more, but got mine from amazon.com. I also bought the ss and a book of the BBM music for piano.
You will love the ss I hope. I wish I had studied harder at the piano when I had the chance. :\'( I would love to be able to play the music.
Thanks BBBOY - *o) I got the ss yesterday and started reading it last night at midnight - it got to be too late, so I only got 1/2 way through. It does clear up a lot of things & it's so hard to believe this wonderful movie came out of just 30+ pages! The piano music - I took for 6 years as a kid, but don't play much now. I wasn't able to see inside the book, so hope I can play it. Need to dust off my piano. But you should be able to pick it up, depending on how long you took.
Here is an early review of the new 2 disc collectors edition
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=26091
If this new version contains deleted scenes I will definitely buy it.
I'm the same - I'm only buying it if it's got deleted scenes. Not that it's being released in Region 2 anyway :-\\
Thanks for the link :)
So basically aside from the postcards I guess it's not worth it. :-\\ I really want the postcards but do I need another copy of the movie just to get them :s)
If they get enough of a demand they will respond.
So we need to make a big noise and keep the big noise going:
^^) A cross -forum campaign including Bettermost and Dave Cullen
^^) Adresses to snail-mail to
^^) Websites for this issue and this alone
^^) You-tube film campaigns
^^) Media apperences by people who are comfortable talking about BBM in front of cameras and micropnones
^^) Stunts - spending a night in a tent in central park, hanging cowboy hats from public places etc
That's a good idea to slam them with letters or postcards. :)
Make sure your E-Mail's aren't threatning, but that they convey that the fans of the film want, and will buy/support the release of DVD that contains the Deleted Scenes.
Well, I'll boycott them, I already wrote it: They got already enough of my money.
I like DMT's suggestion, let's bomb them with some ''contact us'' e-mails but remain polite.
I do not think boycotting is the right word to use here. That is when a company has done something awfull. They brought us the best film ever! Universal has not done anything awfull - its what they have not done that is what we are interested it. They have not as yet given us the deleted scenes we all know exist.
I will gladly part with more money to get my hands on these scenes. If they make the righy product - I'll buy it as so will the rest of us.

no deleted scenes on the european thing.
but i have got the dvd here, nicely made, with all those quotes, including ang, and the postcards..
i just was wondering if the one in 1 (usa etc) would be different then? means we have got it before US?
I was wondering about that, too, because I know from seeing pix of what Chameau, in Canada, got when he first got the DVD, that it was a nice special edition with nice packaging and extras -- and other countries seemed to get those, also. But all we got in US was just a plain old one-disc shrink-wrapped DVD.

I've seen pics posted of it. It's a very nice release. It must have been released only in Quebec then cause I've never seen it anywhere else in Canada. I wonder if they still sell it in Quebec?
kathy
So after viewing the new release on the 23rd should we come to this thread and complain..err I mean give our opinions on it? Or is there going to be a new "review the collectors edition" thread?
I am quite certain that Criterion is going to get a license and you are going to see the Criterion Collection of Brokeback Mountain. I have been very tempted to phone Focus and phone Michael Hausman and offer to pay my own way to go down to do a commentary track. I will even pay for [Assistant Locations Manager] Jay St. Louis to go do a commentary track just about the locations on the show. I would love to do that

It's official. I went to BestBuy during lunch and found out that the DVD DOES NOT have deleted scenes. That site on Universal saying there is, isn't accurate. I also looked at the HD-DVD version of it. It has both the HD and standard def DVD on each side (2 sided). I guess I will order both of them since I have an HD-DVD player and if nothing else, for the paultry extras and the postcards on the collector's edition....So I'm a little confused. Did you actually see it in front of you at Bestbuy? Why will you be ordering them instead of buying them right there? ???

I probably will. I want the postcards. *^) I'll probably go tonight, also. I like to get such things on the release date, though I don't know if "they" keep track of such things, such as they do for "opening weekend" of a movie.
Besides...I do need another copy. Right.
kathy
Even though this edition falls far too short of our expectations, I have decided to get at least one copy. Well maybe two. One copy must never be opened.
Too bad they didn't have the handwritten notes that Ennis/Jack sent to each other and the mountain picture postcard...
I agree- dammit now I'm really mad at myself for putting it back :X I'll end up ordering it later on tonight ;D
Get it. Trust me you'll love the one that one that Jack sent Ennis, it's a reproduction of the one from the movie. Then you have the one with Jack crying, its a close up. Then the one with Jack & Lureen dancing, and Jack's got this big grin on his face, and again it's a close up. FInally you have the close up of the Dozy Embrace.
I still resist ::) I want deleted scenes or nuthin' >:(
I was alreay a mad at Universal, because of the Canadian DVD version... You know the one with the Toyota add you can't skip? ::) They don't deserve more of my money, they got already enough.

i pre-ordered the Collector's DVD from amazon - I hadn't bought any others. I paid $24.99, but today saw it was on sale for $16.99. I emailed amazon & they are giving me a credit for the difference. Thought I'd post this in case anyone else had the same situation.

I will be buying it tonight. I really want to watch it in HighDef. I'll let you know if there's a noticable difference.adrian, do you have an HD-DVD player? If so, you need to get the HD version, not the "collector's edition"
I ordered it today also from amazon, at the $16.99 price. But I didn't do the "free" shipping with order of $25 -- nothing else I really wanted.

I was able to get the free shipping because i also ordered the piano music of the soundtrack. I wasn't able to preview it, so hope I can play it! I'm also going to check out that "trivia" book that Luv Jack Nasty mentioned early on this thread, but think I'll check it out in person first. I'm always a little leery of "unofficial" versions.

Thanks for the pix :) I'm beginning to think it might be worth it just for the postcards, but I hate to give in and allow myself to be ripped off like that, especially since I wouldn't be able to even watch the DVD anyway. (I don't know why there are apparently no plans to release it in the UK, we give them a truckload of BAFTAs and this is all the thanks we get >:( ) But if I order it, I just know that a week later they'll release it here, and I would've wasted even more money ::)
The piano music of the soundtrack!!!!!!!!?
Excellent. I had asked about this nearly a year ago!!!! Thanks BBM Fan for telling me about this! :)

I'm also going to check out that "trivia" book that Luv Jack Nasty mentioned early on this thread, but think I'll check it out in person first. I'm always a little leery of "unofficial" versions.
Dear dirtbiker, you should have told me earlier then. ;)
All you piano players, I would love to hear the music of the score played on piano -- and other instruments -- since that's not what it was played with. Probably sounds fantastically fascinating on piano. I know you play, Thomas, and sounds like you do, too, BBM Fan, and you, too, Dirtbiker:

OT: kathy, I asked BBM Fan to create a separate thread for this topic in Treasure Box. She is having some difficulties posting the pic, so we should try to help her in this regard. I am sure a guitar score will be available soon.

Missing scene: In the movie trailer there’s a shot of Jack standing on the log bridge shirtless looking down into the stream; this scene was cut from the film.
Missing scene: At the campfire when Jack and Ennis get away to the mountain for the first time in four years, there’s a shot of them (see above) sitting next to each other laughing, which isn’t included in the film. At the opening of the "If you can't fix it Jack, you gotta stand it" scene, Ennis is still joking about Jack forgetting his harmonica. When Ennis joins him on the log he doesn't smile. I believe this missing piece is a prelude to the gut wrenching dialogue that followed and deserves to be edited back in.
I’d include an interview with Annie Proulx about how she wrote the story, her reaction to the movie and how she wasn’t included in the production of it.
Missing scene: In the movie trailer there’s a mysterious man with a concerned look on his face and a teenaged boy standing behind him in front of a cluttered garage, neither of whom are seen nor mentioned in the movie.
Missing scene: In the movie trailer there’s the line, “Well, since we’re going to be working together, I reckon it’s time we started drinking together.” It must have been filmed and should be cut back into the movie.
There are more missing scenes than that.
The hippies that got their VW van stuck in a river and got rescued by Jack & Ennis.

The present which jack gives to Ennis - a riffle. (Have a photos of that somewhere but can't find it right now)
The scene of Ennis and Jack together driving in a truck (See trailer)
Also - the garage scene is with Jack & Randall
And - The shirthless Jack on the pole-bridge was a tubby stand in. To make matters worse, a tubby Jack filmed on the pole bridge would mean a return to BBM! He was not fat when he was young!
One thing which pisses me off is how Focus have released pictures which are from deleted scenes and even have the cheek to put (C) Focus features in the bottom left corner!
The reviewers are quite right about Universal: they know that many fans will buy, so why bother to make a better edition?
It was my point not to buy it, I'm even wondering if the actors are getting some royalties from the sales of this new edition. Didn't Focus Feature sold the rights to Universal a while ago?
This edition could have been much much better than it is.
Would it have been difficult or costly for Universal to have gotten Heath, Jake, and Ang to do a commentary? I guess Universal didn't even want to try or to spend more money...
This edition is a big deception, they just want to make easy money. At least the Frnch one was offering a bit more for a collector, including the short story (in French tough...)
Considering the unexpected windfall Brokeback Mountain made for the studio, that is pretty cheesy don't you think? I have a wide screen and full screen version and am content with them until something better than what is being offered comes along.
If the problem is that you DVD player is set to just one region I can soon help you fix that. You will be able to set it to region 0 - global.
Mail me privatly if you want to know how to do it.
Straight from the blogosphere. Please read. I think many of you will share the final sentiments.

DVD Review: The New Brokeback Mountain Collector's Edition Leaves Questions Unanswered

I want to make something really clear up front.
My very first article for BC Magazine was an enthusiastic and loving tribute to Brokeback Mountain. I’ve written a few more on the subject that were just as positive afterward, so it’s a fair assessment that I’m a fan. I make this statement because I found this new edition a disappointment, not because of the storyline or the production values, but because I was expecting — no I was hoping for — what I didn’t get.
With the addition of the unused amount of space afforded on a second disc, I expected DVD extras such as outtakes and flubbed lines. After reading reports of how the original film had to be edited from nearly three hours down to two hours and fourteen minutes, I wanted to see what was edited out. Any true fan of the film would welcome — no, downright relish — the chance to enjoy a two and a half hour or even longer version, just to see what was missed and to satisfy a hunger for more of the story.
Perhaps more than all the other unanswered questions, I’d hoped to discover the solution to the mysterious missing scenes from the movie that have been taunting me for over a year now.
Missing scenes?
I’ll get to that in a moment and present evidence of them.
When it all comes down to it, if you don’t own a DVD version of Brokeback Mountain yet or have a brand new HD/DVD player, then you should definitely buy this edition now. This is a glorious and beautiful presentation of an incredible film that’s not to be missed. The HD in HD/DVD is obvious and magnificent.
However, if you already own the original DVD released in 2006 don’t bother with this one. Instead, try holding out for a director’s cut version further down the road and hope it’s not until a tenth anniversary edition is released.
Here’s why.
Having seen the movie repeatedly - having for all intents and purposes memorized this DVD - having put up an entire tribute web page to it, I can say without doubt that this is the exact same transfer to disc of the original DVD, complete with soundtrack foibles and all.
For example, in chapter five there's a scene where Ennis is setting up the camp tent and Jack is laying on his back playing his harmonica. Over the dialogue there's an annoying reverb that I expected would have been repaired or replaced on this version, but disappointingly wasn't.
Of the seven DVD extras, four of them already came with the previously presented original 2006 release.
They are:
Directing from the Heart: Ang Lee. A great tribute to an equally great director.
From Script to Screen: Interviews with Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. The screenwriters explain how they discovered the short story and subsequently brought it to life.
Sharing the Story: The Making of Brokeback Mountain. The best produced extra on the disc and well worth watching.
On Being a Cowboy. On how the cast learned to convincingly portray life in the saddle and the culture that goes with it.
Of the above, the most work seems to have gone into Sharing the Story, which was actually a TV special produced by the LOGO cable network. It appears to have been tacked onto the original disc in place of Focus Features/Universal Studios going to the expense of producing a better one of their own and is resubmitted here.
In my opinion the three new featurettes for this collection are not worth rationalizing the use of an additional disc. In fact one of the new extras is included on the main movie disc. Had it been conveniently grouped with all the others on the second disc, it would have allowed room for an extended version of the movie. This is what people hope for when a movie expands to two discs — but not here.
Make sure you check the packaging before you whip out your charge card and make sure you're getting the more expensive HD/DVD - DVD combo. If not, basically your second DVD purchase would essentially buy the same original 2006 release that you already own with only the following features tacked on:
A Groundbreaking Success: How do you combat a beautiful heart-touching love story being instantly labeled “The Gay Cowboy Movie?” This subject deserved at least half an hour or more; it absolutely deserved more than a mere seventeen minutes.
It consists of mostly interviews with gay film critics who cannot stop referring to “queer filmmakers”, political and social analysts, and is sprinkled with very few old and new brief snippets of interviews with the cast and director. A fleeting glimpse is given of how the movie trailer for the film gained a life of its own with spoofs of other films' trailers, such as Brokeback to the Future and Top Gun. The producers noted that these parodies were good natured and accepting, which they were.
What isn’t included but should have been was an examination of the real world controversy and opposition that this movie generated, if for no other reason than to add contrast to an otherwise self-praising featurette. I wanted to see and hear about the theaters that had agreed to show the film and then pulled out at the last moment because of the religious right’s opposition.
Missing also was how most of us felt cheated that the early advertising concerned itself with the heterosexual relationships involved in the storyline instead of the one between Jack and Ennis. I’m sure many early straight theatergoers thought they’d been “bait and switched” an hour into the film. Also blatantly missing was Heath and Jake winning the MTV best kiss award. I also would have liked to have seen and laughed at Lance Armstrong again while kidding his good friend Jake at the ESPY awards "preferring it in the rear... of the theater!"
What is infuriatingly, inexplicably, and inexcusably missing is an interview with Annie Proulx, the creator of the story.
Impressions From The Film is a very scant two and a half minute slide show set to music from the film. This is similar to a feature that could be found on Brokeback Mountain’s website, the difference being that the images here literally blink by at breakneck speed, are grouped together by scene but then are presented inexplicably out of order, so skip this one.
Music From The Mountain is the one saving grace and is more or less a tribute to Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla’s wonderful work on the film. It astonishingly reveals that the magnificent musical score was written before the movie was even shot. Ang Lee had the score playing on CD or running through his head during the filming and scenes were shot to fit Gustavo's beautiful music! It also covers the quest to find just the right vocal performers like Willie Nelson and others to showcase this movie’s score. To actually watch Willie sing, “He Was A Friend Of Mine” in the studio brought me to tears.
This featurette is very enjoyable to watch, however it is over just as you are getting into and enjoying it. At only a little over eleven minutes long, it seems disappointingly short.
The package also comes with eight postcards. These are beautifully printed and big. Any collector would cherish them, particularly the facsimile of Jack’s note to Ennis. The problem is that that note was on a general delivery card and was only half as big as the one that’s presented. No matter. Just don’t tack them up on the wall if you're thinking of keeping them as collectibles.
The film has more enhanced soundtrack options, and is also now dubbed in Spanish.
Having said that…
I’ll repeat from another review I’ve done that if you’ve already seen the film or DVD, watch the extras first. They’ll give you a clearer understanding of the story and the work that went into presenting it. If you’ve never seen the film or DVD, watch the movie first then check out the DVD extras.
As for the movie itself, watching it again only confirms my original assessment of what a great work it is. It also reinforces my firm conviction that both Brokeback Mountain and Heath Ledger were blatantly robbed out of political correctness, or just plain homophobic internal politics at the Academy Awards.
I hadn’t seen any of Heath Ledger’s films before Brokeback Mountain so I had nothing to compare his performance to. Now that I have, I can appreciate what a master performance he gave in this film. To observe a previously merely serviceable actor so completely become his character was a joy to watch. Nor is his work here truly appreciated unless you take the time first to compare it to what came before.
I think Annie Proulx should be compelled to write a sequel detailing what happened to Ennis after that cabinet door closed. It was unfair to leave us wondering. I was so frustrated, I even wrote my own imagined ending to his story on my fan page. There aren’t many movies that leave a viewer feeling that way, but this is one of them. The only others worth trusting with such a project would be screenwriters Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry.
To sum things up:
My imagined and hoped for DVD release would have/should have contained the following:
A two and a half hour or longer version with the missing footage edited back into the feature maintaining the film’s continuity.
The early outtakes of Heath Ledger nearly breaking Jake Gyllenhaal’s nose while attempting that award winning and passionate kiss at the foot of the stairs. I wanted to laugh at their frustration at not being able to get the damned bear to roar on cue. I wanted to see both Jake and Ang Lee on the mechanical bull trying to learn how to ride a real one.
I wanted to see what was missing from the second love scene in the tent that was obviously and drastically edited down and way too short. As in straight movies the heterosexual lovers get undressed and almost nothing is left to the imagination. I’m not talking about showing porn here, I’m talking realism, which I’m sure was experimented with, but discarded because of threats of how the film might be rated.
At least a minimum of thirty minutes of flubbed lined outtakes as a DVD extra showing how much the cast enjoyed the filming.
If that’s what you — no, what we were all hoping for, you won’t find it here. I can only hope that the powers that be at Focus Features read this and create a “director’s cut” just for us based on the above wish list.
And that’s why I’m disappointed.
Not in the film, which is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen, but at the bean counters at Universal that figured we’d buy anything they offered disregarding our hopes.
But of course this is only my opinion.
Maybe one day we'll get what we want. In the meantime, we can enjoy over & over & over what we have. <^(
If you haven't bought it before then I think it is probably a good value, but I have both the wide screen and full screen versions and was really looking forward to more significant extras.
Yeah, so was I, but.... :(
As much as I agree with other nagetive feedback on this edition, I ordered mine.
I just can't resist when it comes to Brokeback Mountain.
Interesting articles -- thanks, Thomas. Disappointing
I had ordered new edition from amazon. Oh well, I paid about $19 for the post cards, then, and what, a half-hour or less of new stuff.
kathy
I got mine yesterday. Expensive postcards but I do LOVE them! I'll probably just keep this set all together & not use it until my old DVD breaks or wears out!
The last time I was this disappointed, BROKEBACK lost the Best Film Oscar!
It's a travesty!
There are more missing scenes than that.
The hippies that got their VW van stuck in a river and got rescued by Jack & Ennis.

I got mine in the mail yesterday. Sometimes I'm a doofus when I order by mail when I could go and get it someplace and not pay S/H, but I didn't know I was going near anyplace or if it would be on the sale price of $16.99. So there I was at Best Buy myself last night and as rpmnh said, it was $16.99 there.
Another odd BBM thing at Best Buy: There were these paired DVD's for a lower price than two separately. I wish I'd paid better attention (not a good reporter here) but the movie that BBM (the regular DVD) was with was something that looked like a light comedy girly-ish movie I'd not heard of, with no one in it that especially caught my eye. I did think it was an odd pairing, whoever thought of that marketing idea. They don't have to get "chick-flick" afficionados to watch BBM -- they could have put it with some other movie to get some other target audience to watch it.
kathy
I can't believe you got yours already. I think you said from amazon. I pre-ordered from there & mine still hasn't come! >:(
I picked up my copy of the Collector's Edition at Best Buy for $16.99 today. I still haven't opened
either of my two DVD copies of BBM (widescreen, fullscreen) that I bought last year - they are still wrapped in their plastic packaging. I think that I may take a look at my new Collector's Edition copy, though. Maybe one of those synchronized viewings will help me overcome my inertia... What a great idea... and something only BBM fans could understand...
I'll be buying it this week. But was wondering, while I wait, has anyone ripped the extras from it? That'd be a good idea for those who haven't got it yet. ^f^
I suspect that the deletion of deleted scenes is a marketing ploy by Universal who will probably in another year or so release the "Ultimate Collector's Edition" with deleted scenes included - just to keep us buying.
Which of course I will! I would like commentary too. Jake/Heath/Ang - I don't care who, just someone.
I hope it is just that and not Ang Lee balking too much...
jess
It is wrong for them not to include some deleted scenes and perhaps outtakes, it is nasty wrong.
jessi
Focus Features? Focus Nasty!
;D ;D
Gosh Carbyville - you replied faster to my posting than it took for Lureen to get her bra off!
You're right and I already posted it I'm quite sure the cast and crew don't get a cent of the new DVD sales >:(
I had suspected this. Perhaps Ang Lee and the actors just wanted this behind them, or were just too busy with other commitments. If this is true, then perhaps they will inevitably come around to making a commentary.
Focus Features? Focus Nasty!
I'm about to write them and let them know, politely, about the discussions fans have about their Collector's Edition. The least we could say is... we're disapointed, no?
Sounds like a plan. I am going to leave the petition up for a little while longer so I can hopefully get more signatures. The amount I've got right now really isn't that intimidating, but is a good start. Once I feel I have an adequate number I will be printing out two copies and mailing them to Universal and Entertainment in Video along with letters of my distaste with this spar** "Collector's Edition."
I'm taking the link to the petition here:

I went down to the states and picked it up (Canadians don't get it till feb6). Sure there isn't much added to it. Nice packaging, like the cards but all in all I'm glad I bought it. I don't mind shelling out $25 for a BBM dvd once a year. I say big deal! Remember its for "collectors"! The more BBM stuff the merrier I say. If they put out (in the 1st place) the ultimate DVD with commentaries, deleted scenes, etc, etc...then we wouldn't have anything to look forward to. I can't wait and hope for the next release which I know will be more better.
Thanks for that link, I am surely going there. Maybe a scene to him is more different than to me. I mean, we know they shot a fairly long bit with the hippies, they shot more with him holding the sack with shirts, ang lee said they shot about 15 minutes not used dancing with Lureen, in the segment, they cut out those unsavory looking hicks, one with Ennis in a bar, them in a truck... I think of a scene as before they move on to another. Cut usually means that scene is done. I want the full segment of the I brought beans so much it hurts. I want so bad those few minutes from some very moving and important scenes that were filmed and cut off. sigh
jessi
This interview with an assistant director maybe should go in some other thread, but at the beginning he talks about missing scenes, so I'll put the link here. Actually, it's from findingbrokeback.com, I saw at the end, and maybe some have seen this before in any event -- it's not new or anything.
He talks about only two scenes shot that weren't used, but we know there are more than that.

Thanks again everyone for signing the petition. I need to circulate it more so I can get it printed out and sent to Universal.
For the petition have you guys sent the message over to davecullen and bettermost .com?
I felt weird posting there
yeah I am based in the UK got my copy a few days ago agree its very good but had hoped there were some shots that hadnt made it into the original release. I also have a copy of the german "delux" edition in european format - the presentation is excellent and though again no additional footage the extra disc is worth a look. Here hoping there is a further copy with extra scenes in the pipeline-Gus
No deleted scenes, sorry :(
I'm merging your thread with the one we have already, it's a long story of hopes and disapointments.
Okay LD- pics of the postcards are on pg 15 of this thread. I guess I was wrong about the reunion one. I must be thinking of something else- oh well but the pics are on that page :)
Hi, on another group one member posted a "deleted scene" which appears to be Ennis at a graveyard - when asked the member said that she had gotten some deleted scenes on this site and another - can you please help me in finding them by providing the link. Thanks. bobi ahve never been able to find any deleted scenes so i second bob's request :) i was begining to think they were not able to be found.
The deleted scenes were already discussed here, if you don't mind I merged your thread to this one... this is a long story, read it all but I warn you, for now it's a disappointing story.
basically it is disapointing because the collecters edition had no deleted scenes right?
at the moment im waiting before buying the dvd just incase they bring one out with the deleted scenes i mean they have to some day right i wouldnt like it never been able to see those extra minutes of ennis' and jack's life and also those extra hours of work heath put into them, im really hopeing they make another special addition of BBM with all the extras.
