I agree, I also feel for Jack when Ennis is cruel to him down by the lake... and Jack tells him to "go to hell". Something about it feels so.... uncomfortable.  :-\

Good word for it, Gyllenhallic, that's exactly how it makes me feel! It's where WE really start to be aware of the strain their relationship is under, what it's costing them  ... making the later "GDB of an unsatisfactory situation" very believeable ... as well as the "can't stand this anymore" ....   :(   That last fight was a long time coming, built on moments like the ones above ...   :(

Yes, for some reason when I watch that scene.... I have that feeling I'm actually there with them and that Jack and Ennis just had that argument and now I'm just sitting there with that feeling of awkwardness.... :-\\

But you're right, that argument really does show that their relationship is becoming increasingly difficult.... and also shows us that Jack and Ennis are pretty much the best and worst things for eachother. :\'(

It's not really a scene that I dislike, but part of a scene.

It's the scene after Jack washes his clothes in the stream, the maku-up cuddle in the tent. the kiss and all, and then at 33:44 till 34:05 minutes there is a take which totally throws me off.

Here you don't see Ennis and Jack making love, but two actors having an uncomfortable scene, especially Heath is looking like he is totally out of character and uncomfortable...

It's the rubbing of the chest, and the closing of the eyes that makes it unbelievable.

O well, I'll get over it...

The whole idea of Heath playing it like that is to make Ennis look shy/uncomfortable.He is not used to it,being with a man in that way.

I agree, and the whole scene in its total is beautiful shot and gives that fibe, but just these 15 seconds...

I dont know... I feel, if they deleted that take, It would have been perfect.

It just feels 'off'... Its more of a 'I have to do it, but really dont want to' than a 'I really want to do it, but I don't know how' feel to it imo.

I've changed my mind. I did post before that the scene that I disliked the most was the one where the two ranchers call Jack a pissant in front of Lureen. I still don't like that scene, but I have now realized that the one I absolutely hate is the one where Jack has impulsively driven to see Ennis after receiving the postcard about Ennis's divorce and gets turned away. The changes in Jacks expressions from pure joy when he arrives, to the realization that it wasn't Alma keeping Ennis from him but Ennis himself, to the tears in the truck when he leaves are horrible to watch. :(

I think the fact that Ennis doesn't open his eyes, but caresses Jack's neck and chest with his eyes closed has to be that way.  First of all, when your eyes are closed, your other senses are more highly tuned ( at least in my experience).  I think Ennis was new at this softer type of gentle love and was literally feeling his way with Jack.  I love the tentativeness of his actions in this scene.  To me, it made the whole SNIT more believable and more perceptive on Ang's part.  People don't always rush into new experiences, but take them slow and gradually, imo.

Hmmm... I dont agree... I mean: when I saw it the first and all the following times I thought: "hmmm... Jake Gyllenhaal is uncomfortable!"... Check the way he kisses Heath's forehead. HE DOESN'T! He just keeps his lips on his forehead and nothing more! Check it please! And you will see it too!
Heath on the contrary has passion in his hand caressing him. And sort of "pain" in his closed eyes...
No, i think Heath was almost always comfortable in those scenes. Not Jake. (Check also the Reunion Kiss scene...).

I actually found them both to be completely believable. They both seemed tentative - cautious in their approach to the other. Jack seemed to be savouring having Ennis there. Maybe I'm weird, but if I have a soft piece of velvet in my hands I nearly always rub it across my lower face and mouth because I like the feel of it, I just thought Jack was doing the same. Just pressing his lips onto something he liked. The way if you are holding a baby you may put your face in their hair and smell them. I thought it showed that he cherished Ennis and didn't just see him sexually. Ennis  was doing the same, feeling Jacks face, hair and body.  Just my opinion...  :)

Oh well, I'll get over it! :D

IT was just the one thing I disliked about the movie, could not help interpreted it that way.
It was just like I was smiling and totaly 'in 'the scene' and that 15 seconds it was sort of a Ally McBeal moment (with the record scratch)

But I just watched it again, and there is just one crusial thing I missed.

When they are in the tent and start kissing and Ennis seems to be very nervous jacks whispers very soft 'it's allright, it's allright..' wich totaly throws the scene in a differnt light, and I'll have to agree what you guys are saying.

I'm sorry I missed that...

But its really REALLY soft!  ::)

If you listen really closely you will hear Ennis say "I'm Sorry" just before Jack says it's alright;)...Glad you heard that at least. And this thread is way off topic.lol

Of course, I love this movie as is.. but one scene.. line, actually I hate and wish it was done differently was when Jack says...
"sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.'
To me it just sounded so fake and wooden, like he was reading it off the script. To me it had no emotion, none of Jake's wonderful facial expressions...

Ah! But isn't that the point of the scene CherryCake? Jack is normally a happy guy and full of physical expression. Here he is in the pits of sadness and lonelyness and is trying to tell  Ennis how much he is in love with him and needs him.  Perhaps he is also reflecting on their relationship?

I also think he is so extremely scared that by saying this he will raise the opposite reaction he is looking for from Ennis. Scare him off instead of make him understand how much Jack needs him.  "the thing is............sometimes I miss you so much, I can hardly stand it." The hesitation before he actually says it, to me, shows his apprehension of putting this thought into words. Just my opinion.

I'm with you, BBMaddict.  I think that little pause before Jack really comes out with his thoughts makes that line so meaningful.  That always makes me cry.  Here Jack is, risking telling his gut-wrenching emotions, not knowing how Ennis will respond.  When he doesn't respond at all, I am sure Jack is hurt.  He never expects too much from Ennis, and that is a good thing because Ennis so seldom ever gives him anything to go on.  I'm sure at times Jack would have thought he was in this thing all by himself.
This is one of my favorite lines and scenes.

It is definately one of the most poinant scenes to me, but in the vein of this thread, one I dislike the most because of the way it makes me feel. I just want to grab Ennis and scream "Say SOMETHING. Let him know how YOU feel!!" It's a great scene, one that in my opinion, could not have been done away with, just leaves me with that "funny" feeling in the pit of my stomach.

The first couple of times I watched the movie, I felt the same way as CherryCake, but after a few more viewings I came to the same conclusions as Patriot1 and BBMaddict, particularly the bit about the pause between "the truth is..." and "sometimes I miss you..." It's been said on another thread that Jack was saying "I love you" with that line, so it makes sense that he would take his time, thinking of the right way to say it, and whether he should even say it at all. The way he says the "I miss you..." line backs this up too, imo, he kind of blurts it out all in one go, as if he's still not sure if he should say it, so he does it quickly before he can change his mind.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

To me the acting to me was off.  Reflecting on thier relationship?  Hasn't he been doing this the last 20 years?  I understand the point of the scene, and the words are great.  The deilvery just didn't fit to me.   I understand people would bristle at this scene I didn't like... and I still don't after many, many viewings...
No wonder Ennis didn't recieve and react as many people wanted to that line... I didn't feel it.

I've been racking my brain, to find a scene I really dislike. I was looking for something I dislike because it is not well done. To be honest: I can't find a scene that should have been cut, or even added. Even though: There is one thing that has come up: In the short story there is the mention of "the brilliant charge of their love making that never changed" or something like that, quite late in their relationship. I do think there is something missing there. So, what I dislike the most is a scene that isn't in the movie.Kind of daft, isn't it :s)

Rosie, Monicita - I understand what you mean.

I get the impression from many posts here (certainly it's that way for me) that maybe "dislike" is a misleading description.  Sometimes it's about the scenes that make us the most uncomfortable or hurt us because we see how badly Jack and/or Ennis are hurting.  A part of you wishes that never had to happen.  Some may actually dislike a scene for one reason or another but for a lot of us it's that we're unhappy because of the way it leaves us feeling.  Which is part of great film making.  :)

And I would have liked that "brilliant charge" thing too, Monicita, although since we got SNIT and them sleeping contently together that very last camping tirp, I'm willing to forgive!

Scene that hurts me the hardest: The divorce misunderstanding.  It's completely  brilliant and part of me hates it because of what it means to Jack and Ennis's relationship ...  love and hate that scene, two sides of the same coin ...   :(

I can't say that I really dislike this scene, but the hardest scene for me to watch has to be the scene where Jack comes to see Ennis after the divorce. The transition from Jack so excited and happy to his tears after being rejected by Ennis is so powerful. You can almost hear Jack's heart breaking when he realizes that Ennis still will not start a life with him even after the divorce. This to me is the saddest scene in the movie. I see it as a real turning point for Jack. I may be wrong, but I don't think we see Jack smile again for the rest of the movie. He is still willing to play by Ennis' s rules, what else can he do, but it is breaking his heart. Maybe I dislike it because it is so traumatic for Jack. Wish it could have ended happier... but then I guess it wouldn't be the movie we all love would it?

It's not really a scene that I dislike, but part of a scene.

It's the scene after Jack washes his clothes in the stream, the maku-up cuddle in the tent. the kiss and all, and then at 33:44 till 34:05 minutes there is a take which totally throws me off.

Here you don't see Ennis and Jack making love, but two actors having an uncomfortable scene, especially Heath is looking like he is totally out of character and uncomfortable...

It's the rubbing of the chest, and the closing of the eyes that makes it unbelievable.

O well, I'll get over it...

You know, thats odd, because when Ennis is rubbing against Jake like that, thats one of my favorite parts in the entire movie ;D . So beautiful, he was like a child, i love it! I think Heath was Ennis in that scene. Ennis was meant to be uncomfortable and nervous as hell, and though it could of been Heath's real anxiety, it turned out great IMO. Jake does it perfectly well, Jack is the teacher, and he doesn't act scared at all, when Ennis comes for some love, so sad, can't think, i'll die

I loved ,loved, loved ! every part of this scene. It's shocking and heartwarming at the same time.  But the scene I disliked the most was when they came down off the mountain and they are talking by the truck. you just know Jack is waiting for some kind of akknowledgment from Ennis that their experience on Brokeback mountain meant something special. The expressions on Jack's face , misty eyed, full of sadness at their parting, almost pleadingly hoping for a word , a gesture , ANYTHING. I felt so bad for em. Wanted to shake Ennis and beg him NOT to marry Alma.

You know reading these posts has made me realise that I'm affected by ALL the scenes where Jack gets rejected or hurt. The fight on the last day on the mountain. Their parting after. The clown. Being ignored when the grandparents visit the baby. The ain't gonna be that way scene. After the divorce. Mexico. The piss-ant. The whole of the last trip. But they make the few scenes of our boys happiness all the sweeter. The highs and lows are extreme. And the pain of Ennis at the end....and all the way through the film....Ennis just doesn't let us see it.

I really hate the hospital room scene when jack's father-on-law treats him like a slave.  It ties in with the Thanksgiving scene at Jack's home.  Again, he is made to look foolish until he finally has had enough and stands up for himself.  I hate to see anyone put down and degraded, so this scene bother me.
The other Thanksgiving scene bothers me,t oo.  It is obvious that Alma doesn't really want Ennis at her house, but then she brings up the taboo topic that she should have brought up years ago.  I'm sure that came out of the blue to Ennis.  I don't think he knew Alma had seen him kissing Jack, or trapped him with the note in  the fishing kit.  These scenes are necessary to the story, but leave me uncomfortable.

I just realized i sorta hate the scene where Ennis picks a fight with the guy in the truck.

1. Because Ennis loses
2.Because when he's laying on the ground, being held down, thats like a rape, i always squirm at that part, its just terrible, and if you read my ff, Ennis doesn't do too well with rape :\'(
3.Ennis started the fight
