This is from the book:

"Shot a coyote just first light," he told Jack the next evening, sloshing his face with hot water, lathering up soap and hoping his razor had some cut left in it, while Jack peeled potatoes. "Big son of a bitch. Balls on him size a apples. I bet he'd took a few lambs. Looked like he could a eat a camel. You want some a this hot water?

Why would a man without latent homosexual tendencies make such a comment?  Or maybe he wasjust 'feeling' Jack out...

hmmmm

Jim

Ever hear of "mountain oysters"?  You don't have to have latent anything to remark about an animals parts that's just how they talked about such things they were ranch hands plain and simple.

Freud said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"

May West said: "Are you glad to see me or is that a pistol in your pocket"  - could have been a pistol.

I sometimes say: "Look at the rack on that buck" and  I ain't looking at no deer.

"I wish I knew how to quit you!" -- the line sums up just how strong their bond is despite years of struggle and only brief moments of being together. Jack, despite him being the more 'sexual' one, going as far as to cheat with others for what he 'needs', can't find ANY kind of substitute for Ennis. It's incredible, a shollow-man so deeply rooted in his far-away highly unlikely relationship -- that's beyond true love.

i wish i knew how to quit crying reading anything about BBM!  :'(

I give up about stoping crying...

Just that line:  "I wish I knew how to quit you!"  started me to cry on my third viewing.... from there till the very end of the movie.

What was it they said when they were on the mountain and they were sick of eating beans...  Jack said something about killing and eating one of the sheep.  And, Ennis said that they were getting paid to watch the sheep, not eat them.  Or, maybe the otherway around.  Anyway,  If they had killed and eaten a sheep, then, they could have said "I love ewe!!!!!"

Yes, and then Ennis' response sends 'the final volt of emotion' toward you, I have never seen two lines that so well complement each other ( I had actually started crying when Jack said his line -- put Ennis' response just nailed it) .... "Then why don't you?  Why don't you let me be?  It's because of you, Jack, that I'm like this...I'm nobody...I'm nothing..."

To me that line shows just how muchEnnis loved Jack. Ennis was not 'blaming' Jack for his problems, he was telling Jack that their long-away consistenly barracaded relationship had left Ennis a lonely, confused man who could not live a normal life. Simply put, Ennis has spent his whole life that way, and the brief moments with Jack rearranged his confusion into happiness and expression. Ennis, at this point, cannot handle the feasibility of Jack leaving, that would eventually kill him :(

MidtownFreak; I so agree with you! Even if he wasn't able to say it out loud, this was Ennis' way of telling Jack how much he loves him. It's so heartbreaking to see how they embrace on the ground; after Ennis has said "Im nobody...I'm nothing..." Jack understood that Ennis loved him, and that it was tearing Ennis apart...   :'(

After Jack's flashback to the first summer, when Ennis comes up from behind and embraces him; when he's "sleeping on his feet like a horse" - Jack is thinking "Let be, let be..." I wonder what that meant.... was Jack trying to quit Ennis here? Or was he just realizing that they would never be able to get into a "normal" long-time relationship; they would have to continue meeting in the middle of nowhere; like they'd done for 20 years? In the end, Jack's dad is also telling Ennis that Jack had meant to take his Texas ranch-neighbor up to Lightnin' Flat to get the ranch into shape...?? I just can't stand the possibility that Jack maybe had found somebody else than Ennis... that just makes everything sadder... But I guess Jack needed to pursue happiness; and maybe he had to come to terms with the fact that he would never be truly happy with Ennis...

Any views on this?

Another image that is "haunting" me after the movie, is the expression in Jack's face after the "sleeping on your feet like a horse"-embrace; when Ennis is getting on the horse to go to the sheep. You can just see how Jack's face is shining with love for Ennis; the longing in his eyes.... That's just such a beautiful moment...

How sad that it couldn't be like that, always...

I have to stop writing now; my eyes are getting teary just for writing this...

I rather doubt that Jack would have been successful with Randall. Randall was dry in personality, lust-driven, and in no way a 'good' person. Jack is no angel, either.. but the major reason he really feel in deep love with Ennis was because of Ennis' loneliness and innocence. Ennis' love for Jack was real, completely driven by deep emotion, Jack's acknowledgement of this drove him deeper as well. Hell, that's exactly why Jack said it.. "I wish I knew how to quit you!"

Very well said MidtownFreak, I agree with you.  I just love Ennis because of his loneliness.

Hi everyone, that last embrace/cuddle and that look in Jack's eyes were for me the images of their reconciliation with the fact that they weren't going to live together, but that their trysts could yet be fulfilling. We are led to believe that Jack "fooled around", but never that he found somebody else. Jack's father embodies those people that refuse to understand that there is one special love, he would put all of Jack's friends on the same level.

That scene was gut-wrenching, I cried when Jack started yelling at Ennis, then choked up when Ennis replied with "just let me be." in translation : "Without you, life is nothing."

Ennis's last line : "Jack, I swear...." What is he thinking ? For me : I swear, it's so bad I can hardly stand it.  :-[

Me neither, believe me!
I posted just after I got home from my second viewing. I was both tired and restless, but since waking this morning I've been having trouble seeing through all the water in my eyes.
I love your interpretation, chameau. Anyone counted all the different ways Ang Lee found to say "i love you" ?

The second time I saw Brokeback, a bit I missed first time really hit me in the guts.

Ennis has just come down from the high pasture, and learns from Jack that Aguirre is ending their time on the mountain. Unable to process, his anger and fear turns into him lashing out at Jack.

In a shaky, small voice, Jack simply replies:

"Alright."

The bewilderderment and hurt in just that one word... crushing.

Their time in Arcadia is at an end...

The whole movie was a constant song, or better, hymn, to love..
Looks, lines, movements, symbolizations...everything...
"Jack, I swear"..."I'm nothing...nowhere..."
The 2 shirts hugging one another..
I don't know.. I've written many things about the movie on my blog... I've written them after my first view of the movie.. I did it without tears.
Now..after my 4th.. I can't write anything more..
Since I first saw the movie, I'm in a constant bad mood.. I think it's because I don't know whether I'll find this kind of bonding in my life..The kind of Love that I was looking for all my life but I couldn't put into words. Then suddenly...A movie..a film..came up and depticted the vague yet so precice image I had about Love in my head....

I feel happy .. HAPPY about this movie... I'm 24..yet I've become very cynical in the last years through many difficulties... I haven't cried like this watching a movie for 3 years now...
I don't know what to say...I could just write forever...
Thank you Ang Lee for your eye on things. Thank you Jake and Heath for your outstanding performances...
Most of all...Thank you God for making me realize that if I'm a damn lucky son of a gun, I'll find someday, somehow, the love of my life...

You've got time on your side!  Just don't miss it when it happens.  Some people miss it when it hits them up side the head.

Go ahead and write forever.  It's how you get in touch with yourself.  ...a very good thing if you are going to touch someone else.

Peace and love brother!

"See ya at supper?"

I don't remember if that is exactly right, having only seen the movie twice, it was the only thing Jack could say to Ennis before he rode off the morning after"The Grand Opening". It was the first tug at my heart, followed by many more.

And Ennis getting his gear, ignoring Jack, the wordless look he gives him after that line... okay, I have to stop, there's a lump in my throat now.  :-\

(...) it was the only thing Jack could say to Ennis before he rode off the morning after"The Grand Opening". It was the first tug at my heart, followed by many more.

And Ennis getting his gear, ignoring Jack, the wordless look he gives him after that line... okay, I have to stop, there's a lump in my throat now.

Sigh!  Me too.  :-\

Heath Ledger proved there (again!) what a wonderfull piece of acting he did on BBM.

Ennis's line "Lighten up on me, Jack" just before their huge argument is another one that tore at my heart.
A whole week together and Ennis hadn't been able to tell Jack that the next time couldn't be until November. I don't think the reason is simply that Ennis couldn't bring himself to say it. He was used to Jack's reactions.

Being so in love with Ennis, I haven't thought a lot about the character Jack, but it does seem that he changed. At the beginning of the film he is more light hearted. In that last argument, his frustration at not having a life with Ennis has built up so much, he becomes more demanding, more nagging even (I don't blame him !) Is he becoming less understanding ? Perhaps, but then they kiss and make up  :) :)

I think Jack might have seriously considered giving up on Ennis. Then he realises that Ennis could never give him up... so move never stops growing, does it ?
