Jack is irritated when Ennis takes the bandanna away so quickly.  Jack sits down near Ennis and looks in the fire.

Jack:  Well, we've got to do something about this food situation.  Maybe I'll shoot one of the sheep.

[they were] both high school dropout country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life.

Ennis:  What if Aguirre finds out, huh?  We're supposed to guard the sheep, not eat 'em.

Jack, irritated:  What's the matter with you?  There's a thousand  of 'em.

Ennis:  I'll stick with beans.

Jack, determined:  Well I won't.

Jack: Whoeee!! Yeah!!
Ennis: Gettin' tired a' your dumbass missin' . . .    :)

(But we all know that he'll do anything at this point to please Jack...)

The boys sit side-by-side in front of the fire and silently enjoy a meal of "grilled" elk.

New Scene. Ennis, camp tender, is fixin' the meal as Jack slowly saunters in a horseback. Jack groans loudly like an old man as he dismounts, then begins his gripe . . .

JACK: Arghh, ugh. . . . yeah, I'm commutin' four hours a day. (Ennis pays little attention keeps busy with the meal) I come in for breakfast, I go back to the sheep. Evening get 'em bedded down, come in for supper, go back to the sheep. Spend half the night checkin' for damn coyotes'. (slams his rifle down next to Ennis to get his attention) Aguirre got no right ta' make me do this!

Next scene.Ennis rides on his horse for going up in the mountain.

-Jack :-You won't get much sleep, I'll tell you that.

-Ennis :-Yup. ( to his horse ) Come on...

He gets farther while Jack is looking at him with a little smile.

Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Ennis (to Jack):  Shot a coyote up there... big SOB... balls the size a' apples... he looked like he could eat himself a camel!  Y'want some of this hot water?

Jack, who is supposed to be a little nervous before the little striptease of his fellow, gets soaked with the tin's sauce.

-Jack:Shit...It's all yours.

Inmediately,we see how Ennis takes off all his clothes and takes a bath, while Jack, near to us,is trying to take a look while peeling potatoes. We can observe he's rather excited.

You can sense that Jack is watching Ennis from the corner of his eyes -- watching Ennis wash his armpits and privates.  jack gulps ever so slightly, indicating the suppressed measure of his unease/excitement...

New Scene.  Jack has just finished making water.  He zips up and approaches Ennis, who is finishing up his can of beans.

Ennis: Hmmmmmm...

Jack's hands frame the rodeo bet buckle, raps it for emphasis, and shows it proudly to Ennis.  Ennis continues:

Ennis:  Don''t rodeo much m'self... I mean... what's the point of ridin' some piece of stock for 8 seconds?

Jack takes a drink from the whiskey bottle:  My old man was bull rider, pretty well known in his day, though he kept his secrets to himself.  NEVER taught me a thing, NEVER once come to see me ride.

A momentary awkward pause.  jack tries to transfer the focus of the conversation away from himself.

Ennis continues...

Ennis: I got me a year of high school before the transmission went on the pickup...  my sis left... married a roughneck... moved to Casper...  me and ma brother... we got ourselves some work on a ranch up near Worland until I was 19 and then he got married!  No more room for me!  That's how come me end up here....

He notices Jack grinning.

Ennis: Whut?

JACK: Friend, that's more words than you spoke in the past two weeks.

Jack crack a little smile, realizing he's just let Ennis know that he'd noticed.

ENNIS: Hell, that's the most I spoke in a year.

Ennis smiles back, happy to learn that Jack had noticed.
They both seem pleased and surprised by this new found intimacy.

There is a short silence.

Ennis, continues with a small smile on his face:  My dad, now, he was a fine roper...didn't rodeo much, though.  Without moving his head, Ennis gives Jack a quick, sideways glance.  He thought rodeo cowboys was all f*ck-ups.

Jack, laughing, gets up and walks toward Ennis and yells:  Yee-haw, yee-haw!

Jack starts jumping around, twisting and waving his hat in the air:   I'm spurring his guts out, waving at the girls in the stands!  He's kicking to high heaven, but he can't dashboard ME!  No way!  Yee-haw!

Ennis is watching Jack and laughing.

OT - it is the most beautiful smile from Ennis in the entire movie.

New scene. Boys are moving camp to a new location, we see 'em slowly herding the sheep up the mountain with Santaolalla's beautiful background music. They find a new spot near a stream, begin to set up camp. Jack take's a break, stretches out and plays his harmonica while Ennis finishes erecting the tent. Ennis stands back, looking at his work (while Jack's lounging):

ENNIS: Tent don't look right.
