As to the timeline - sorry to jump in late with this - if the SNIT isn't the next night, which it very well may not be, would Ennis have stayed with the sheep the whole time - avoiding Jack - with no food? Or, does Jack ride out to Ennis - we see the sheep up close in this scene - and they have the "I'm not queer" conversation...then the next day Ennis comes down?
Did Jack bring him a picnic basket of supper?

Because the last line before Ennis rides off is "See you for supper"...the filmmakers let you believe that SNIT is following supper on the next night.

I want to be clear, too...and now I'm totally confused.

Just want to concur with all of you who believe SNIT to be a beautiful piece of work from the director, cinematographer and actors' points of view.
It is rare to see a love scene so intimate and so touching that it makes you cry. The sweetness of Jack's face, the gentle touch to Ennis cheek, Ennis sort of hanging there for a moment mouth slightly open like he's waiting for another kiss...it's all perfection.
Then when they lie down and Jack is so tender and giving and Ennis so wanting...I never, ever see this scene without crying - not sobs, just teary-eyed after a deranged number of viewings.
And, kudos to Gustavo for that music that feels like it's being played on one's own heartstrings.
Truly one of the most remarkable and believable love scenes on film...all else pales in comparison.

I have to say I don't use the zoom button in that scene,, it's such an intimate scene that it feels a bit, intrusive, for want of a better word. I do use the slow motion button on it a lot, but that's mainly to make it last longer

SNIT is the most tender love scene I've ever seen.  It was a giant step for Ennis just to enter that tent.

Yes, exactly!  And it still blows my mind that Ennis doesn't dive into sex immediately; rather, he makes it clear to Jack here that tenderness, intimacy, love are on his mind.  He's obviously very physically attracted to Jack, but emotional and almost spiritual connections are just as important to him here.  That's one of the things I love about this movie: it gives equal attention to lust and love, even more on the emotional love side of things, really.
