Topic: Your Favorite Scene of the Movie - (possible spoiler)

There are so many wonderful, memorable scenes that it is difficult to pick one.  However, my favorite has always been the motel scene.  While we don't see anything revealing (the real action happens before the camera gets involved), we greatly deepen our knowledge of these two men.  They are totally relaxed with one another.  For the moment, they are closeted with one another, without any fear of intrusion, replete sexually, physically as close as it is possible to get.  Therefore, the talk comes freely and flows softly and gently, even though the things they have to say are not always easy to hear.  Jack wants a change in their situation; Ennis refuses.  Jack admits to thinking about Ennis often over the past four years; Ennis won't admit to that, but hints that it is so.  Jack shows himself to be the open, ready to try anything man; Ennis proves to be his usual cautious, responsible self.  I love this scene for the few minutes of peace it affords Jack and Ennis to be together like they should have been all the time.

lamusica, I admit that it is this scene and in the Dozy embrace that I find them to be truly relaxed with each other, even though the motel scene ends with some dark clouds appearing on the horizon.

Of similar beauty is the beginning of the scene that starts with "Anything up there in heaven?".  But again, dark cloud gather to remove the feeling of peace and happiness.  Still, while it lasted, the beginning of this scene is equally beatific -- showing both of them so "at home" with each other.

I love the scene after SNIT when they are wrestling around outside. They seemed very relaxed and playful with each other as if they felt no one else existed in the world but them. Jack pulls Ennis down on top of him and I think I see a kiss? They seemed to me to have a feeling of personal satisfaction with themselves and each other. Totally

I also love this scene.  But as in many other similar scenss that starts beautifully, it ends on a jarring note -- when we see the sour-faced Aguirre spying on them, turing our Joy into dismay.

Still, the beauty of the scene remains.  It is probably the scene that is closest to Whitman's Calamus Poems, specifically the lines:

Tallying and talked to here by tongues aromatic,
No longer abashed -- for in this secluded spot I can respond as I would not dare elsewhere,
Strong upon me the life that does not exhibit itself, yet contains all the rest,
Resolved to sing no songs to-day but those of manly attachment,
Projecting them along that substantial life,
Bequeathing, hence, types of athletic love

What a lovely way to describe the way they felt in that moment.It fits so perfectly  to them, this poem. Tpe, Thank you so much for posting it.
 So blissfully wrapped up in each other with the world  literally at their feet. ...but yeah there's dumbass Aguirre with his spying binoculars to ruin the scene.

Thanks aintfoolin.  That scene really struck me as intentionally Whitmanesque.  But the fact that we see it through Aguirre's binoculars is rather jarring -- so opposite to what we might expect from Whitman, to be sure.

      SNIT- When Ennis takes his Hat in Hand and goes in for that kiss he so wants, and some of Jack's good lovin'.

Another fav scene is when Ennis shoots the elk . Jack's pride and amazement at Ennis's shooting skills, and his whooping it up had to make Ennis feel good and also proud of himself. Then his little remark " we better git, don't want the Forest service to catch YOU with no elk"  projecting the blame onto Ennis if they got caught, even though it was he who probably bitched up a storm  about eating one more bean! ,until Ennis sought food for HIM. It's Jack at his best. Ennis sought to please him, he did. Luv it.

 Yep, your avatar speaks for itself . And thanks for the screencaps below. I had'nt really saw them before, but they show the best of both of them in this scene. Jack playing up Ennis's self esteem and pride, Ennis playfully acknowledging Jack's dumass missing of the coyote. Too sweet. There's a thread asking when they fell in love? Your right, this is it in my opinion too.

lightnin flat, I see that you really favor the emotional high points in the movie.  I feel the same way.  Some would consider some of these scenes as unpleasant or sad to watch.  But I guess the emotional tension in some of them make them unforgettable.

Me too.Pleasant or not,every scene of the movie gives us a burst of emotions and feelings that is what have marked us so strongly about it.

Agreed. Every scene stuck emotinally , but there are several that stand out for each one of us on a personal level. That's what gives this film such worldwide appeal. Even if the gay aspects were replaced with other *forbidden* love in society's eyes, Racial, class diferences etc. it would still hit home in it's basic messege, but anyway, I love this film as is.

Another of my fav scenes is the bucking horse scene. Jack mounts the horse and things get out of control. I remember thinking:  Is he trying to show off his rodeo skills here? , Then I realized that the horse was really out of control and he was getting embarrased in front of Ennis. I was like" comon Jack, you rode the bulls, now get it together here and Ennis was watching him and getting concerned.. I loved Ennis's little lingering stare ( with a lean ) as Jack finally got the horse to go in the direction he wanted and rode off down the trail, but his early statment " I doubt there's a filly that can throw me" did come to mind. I suspect it came to Ennis's mind too. Just too sweet. luved it.

That scene has never failed to rip me apart. I don't watch Jack's death (I think I've actually witnessed it twice- I turn away). It is a gut wrenching scene because it's like an avalanche coming down on them, then you throw in the flashback of what once was and....  :\'( :\'(

       Yea the tell tale signs of age on their faces then in a instant wow transported back 20 years 
             and how great they looked not only their looks but how they looked together .   
                                       just lovely.

Yes, the perfect example is the confrontation scene and the DE: for me, they are probably the most emotional of all the scenes in BBM -- difficult to watch, but impossible not to love for the power and the beauty.

LF, my last post just echoed what you say here, except that I take the confrontation scene and the DE as one unit -- one needs the other in order to make the full impact on the viewer.  For me, they are inseparable.

These 2 related scenes so beautifully contrast with each other at the crucial moment -- that's why we find it so gut-wrenching. no?  The contrast between the confrontation scene and the DE kills us.  We can't have the movie without these.

Wonderfully put, aintfoolin.  I also sensed the feeling of embarassment on Jack's part, and Ennis's questioning eyes don't help Jack at all.  You could tell that Jack was doing all this to impress Ennis.

Moreover,you need them together to see the difference between a love that was at the beguinning and one that,if not at it´s end,was overcoming a crisi,because all the hopes they had in the DE had dissapeared by the time of the confrontation´s scene.To see and understand better what was passing by Jack´s mind in each time and how many renounces must Ennis suffered in spite of himself.

            Definately not the end of their love whatever paths their lives took be it together or as it was becoming to look like apart the love they share will never die even if jack never died and they never saw each other again the feeling,s would remain i am sure of that.
           I am still not convinced that jack would  of QUIT ennis.I know you can get to the stage where you cant take no more i hear jack saying ennis,s words when ennis is talking about work saying i cant quit this one

That's true.  Their relationship was probably close to the breaking point.  It certainly tested their love for each other.  Gyllenhaal's comment about Ennis's greater faithfulness perhaps goes against my feeling that neither of them lost the love they had for each other.  But most certainly, their time together may have been at an end...  Who knows?  Death intervened and made sure it ended.
