That's true.  Their relationship was probably close to the breaking point.  It certainly tested their love for each other.  Gyllenhaal's comment about Ennis's greater faithfulness perhaps goes against my feeling that neither of them lost the love they had for each other.  But most certainly, their time together may have been at an end...  Who knows?  Death intervened and made sure it ended.

Thomas, fortunately the SS and the movie left us wondering. I am a Pollyanna and believe that at some point they would have reached an understanding. The whole point of the movie is about a force of nature and nature will out in the end.  O0
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

Thanks BBBoy.  Love can survive even without the comfort of hope, no?  Nature nurtures even as it destroys.

I'm not going to speak about the DE, or the reunion scene,or SNIT,because everybody has spoken a lot about them and all of us could mark them as our favorites. But one of the scenes if not I like the most,I can say I enjoy or I find nice it's when Ennis and Jack went to introduce the last to Alma.Although the scene is builded over someone's shock and sorrow-Alma-,it's delicious for me the way Ennis dries his lips with the sleeve before speaking to his wife. And the awkward way in which both of them are dissimulating their feelings and wishes:Jack doesn't know if look at Ennis,or at Alma,or to the ground, and Ennis slightly laughing when Jack says he's married and has a baby boy by finishing look at the ground himself...They're doing it so bad that, even if she hadn't seen anything, she suspected¡. ;)
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

This may sound silly to some, but the one scene I keep playing over and over, is when Ennis and Jack take sheep out to pasture.   I don't know, I thought it was so beautiful, the boys look so innocent, keeping themselves separate but not that far apart, and the not knowing what's going happen to them that would change their lives.

Of course, I like the whole movie, but the one scene that seems irreplaceable to me is the motel scene.  In that one scene, the whole movie plays out --their love, sex, hope and hopelessness, indecision, and future.  Besides being the hottest scene ( to me) with Jake's arm around Ennis and Ennis stroking Jake's arm in total sexual repletion, the guys have all these things to deal with.  Now that they're together again after four years, they have to make sure that they are never separated like that again, so they have to come to terms with how to keep this long-distance relationship going.  It's a sad scene, but full of hope and plans.
Yep, it's my favorite!

. . . . Jake's arm around Ennis and Ennis stroking Jake's arm in total sexual repletion . . . .

Oooh, this is so nice, almost as good as Annie's description with all those wonderful smells (you know the ones!).

PS- Freudian slip no doubt, but it's Jack's arm around Ennis, huh? We can dream anyway . . . .

This doesn't sound silly at all! I remember that on my third or fouth viewing of BBM, I started to cry when the boys were on their way to Brokeback with the sheep, with the killing Gustavo S. theme Brokeback Mountain 1...
I think that the people in the theatre must have thought that I was completely crazy!

What makes this scene special for me is that we see them still flushed with happiness.  The knowledge that Alma has found them out is overwhelmed by the joy of their finding each other after 4 years.

MG, I find all the beginning scenes on BBM some of the most beautiful in the entire movie.  The pastoral quatity fills you with a sense of beauty and of peace.  So what you say here is far from silly.

Exactly, the music has a lot to do with it, I think -- as much as the beauty of the scenery.

The SNIT, and the reunion scenes. The two scenes to me that represented hope, enlightenment and happiness for both of the boys.

i love these seens they just warm me through, now though sometimes the happier the scene was first time round the sadder it is the second because knowing jack dies just makes you feel even worse  :\'(.

emylou harris's song from the soundtrack reminds me off their love and ultimatly jacks death

like she says "just lay back in my arms for one more night" this automatically makes me think of how jack cant lay back in ennis's arm for another night i cant bear the sadness but i wouldnt give it up for the world

When Ennis found the shirts I was still caught up in accepting Jack was dead. At first I could not wrap my brain around that fact, it was only later that I realized what Ennis total devastation meant in the closet. It further confirmed the fact that Jack was'nt coming back and that was so painful for me to accept. Ironically I feel the same about Heath's death now every time I read an article or watch his films. Unbelievable.

Those shirts were a god-send to Ennis.  Here, right in front of him, was something that had touched Jack's body, had Ennis's blood on it, and stood for everything they had been to one another.  How many of us have such a beautiful memento of someone we've loved?  Ennis had to see those shirts as a blessing, as well as proof positive that Jack loved him.  If he ever doubted that, he now knew, without a doubt, that Jack loved Ennis.  How many of us ever get that proof positive of another's love?  So much meaning in just those two shirts.  And the fact that the sleeves of Ennis shirt were worked down into  the sleeves of Jack's shirt, compounded the symbolism of their physical relationship, so much so that Ennis reversed the shirts when he got them home.  Jack couldn't let Ennis get away from him.  He had to protect him and keep him enveloped within himself. Now, Ennis was returning the symbolism. Wow!  That's a punch in the gut for Ennis to come to grips with.  It's no wonder he cried.

That scene is wonderful! I love it when Jack asks, "what did you think," and Ennis is trying to refrain from showing is euphoria by mumbling and holding back that smile. He looks so content.

I also love when Ennis is pacing back and forth waiting for Jack to come, and then after he gives up and hears the truck pull up. That look on his face is priceless when he goes to the window and sees him. I should have included that scene in my "Ennis Cutest Scenes" post.

I love so many scenes; some of them are happy, others sad, but all of them are totally beautiful, like the whole film, precious and marvelous.

Among FNIT, SNIT, Reunion Kiss, Dozy Embrace, Ennis at Jack’s home, I adore one especially: The opening scene.

First time I saw the film I was really shocked seeing that scene. I’ve read that Ennis and Jack met queuing in front of Aguirre office to get a job, so I’ve thought that there was going to be more people waiting for Aguirre, and they were going to talk each other while they were waiting. I’d never have imagined that it was going to be like “THAT”.

Ennis was leaning against Aguirre trailer and I was expecting, wanting so bad to know more about him. But then arrived Jack…and when he turned around to watch Ennis, OMG, I lost it completely. I was stunned, wide open eyes and mouth, my heart racing, my mind spinning. First, what the hell was doing that dark haired man? Looking like “that”, intensely, deeply…..And then, leaning like “that” against his truck, so sexy, so confident, and so mysterious……That was not how things between two unknown men were supposed to be!!! I don’t know…But those minutes, in total silence, where they were speaking only with those powerful glances, were stunning, disconcerting, so different. There was a special atmosphere, never seen before.

And second…..that man…those precious and magic eyes…..the mesmerizing strength of his expression. All of Jack was like a punch in my stomach. I was breathless.

I knew, in that very moment, that it was going to hurt, that my life would never be the same again.

Now, every time I try to see again the film, I cry so bad when Jack turns around and lifts his eyes to meet Ennis’s. In that moment I can see with painfully clarity the entire Ennis and Jack’s life, the first sweet moments shared, those first tender kisses, then those horrible separations, that endless passion, those crude fights, the tire iron, the tears, that dusty trailer….And it hurts so bad, in a so cruel way, that I have to quit watching, close my eyes and put a hand in my heart to prevent from bleeding. Every time I only get to see those first minutes, every time I started to cry with the first chord of the guitar, and when Jack appears I’m already a totally mess and then I really can’t see more.

But in spite of all that pain or precisely cause of it, that’s my favourite scene, the one I love the most. Those are the Ennis and Jack I adore, the ones I see when I think about them, the ones so young, still with hopes and dreams, the ones who remind me of that old cold time in the mountain. It’s beautiful ‘cause there they had all their love to discover and live, 20 years to spend together, but at the same time you know the end, you know those tears, you know the broken dreams, and ‘cause of that you see that scene with different eyes, you can taste the bittersweet truth.

BBM will always be that opening scene: Jack looking for Ennis eyes, and Ennis don’t wanting to meet Jack’s eyes, everything like a metaphor of their lifes, Jack looking for Ennis love and acceptation, Ennis running away from that love. Black resistol, black old truck; blue denim, blue shirt; white hat, paper bag; lack of words; eyes up, eyes down; cigarettes and dust; nice to know you Ennis del Mar. That’s for me BBM.

i havn't give my opinion on dozy embrase yet, well this scene is amazing just like most people say the sexless love shown is amazing the way ennis hums to jack and sways him is just so wonderful and pure. the reason this scene is also very sad for me is mainly because the scene it is wrapped up in the 1983 argument and when jack snaps out of his memorie the contrast is enough to tear at my heart when i just think about it god i nearly shed a tear thinking off it one thing that gets me is that in the dozy embrase ennis and jack are in such a loveing sweet mood and ennis rides off saying see you in the morning, when jack snaps back out of the memorie he is watching ennis leave after a big argument there was no goodbye to be seen and ennis would not see jack in the morning he would never see jack again at least not in life. im really nearly crying now partially because the BBM soundtrack is on and its on "i dont want to say goodbye"  :\'(
