I've watched it as a mixture of a little anger before Jack's slighty making fun at him and a little fun by himself as thinking:- What a good time we're going to pass here together with this guy ¡  

Agreed:  Ennis was most likely thinking, "This guy's got a zany sense of humor, so this summer looks to be full of laughs and camaraderie."  Little did he know the extent of the camaraderie! 
Also, Jack had shown compassion for Ennis when he commented on Ennis' childhood, "Shit, that's hard."

The scene at the bar is indeed made wonderful by the sense of empathy and compassion, even if end of the scene was a bit noncommital.

In the scene at the bar is where,IMO,one can see Ennis admiration to Jack,more still than in this little scene we've talked about.When Jack is explaining the last year incident with the lightning that killed several sheep and almost killed himself.Ennis then looks at him as if was his "hero",the kind of cowboy he had always wanted to be.I wonder if it was the very beginning of his friendship or something more in Ennis eyes.

  I don't even know if we can call it a straightforward smile -- his look was quite quizzical, as if he didn't know what to think of Jack. 

Personally, I would take it to be a smile. 

 

Ennis' facial expressions are astounding:   When dumb-shit Aguirre drives up, Ennis' face changes from stone cold sober to very pleasant (since he is hoping that Aguirre will be his new boss); a similar expression appears on Ennis' face when Jack says, "Let's git! Unless you want to sit around here tyin' knots all day"; miniscule smile after shooting the elk; joyful laughing at Jack's antics after stating"my Dad thought rodeo cowboys were all f---ups"; shy, sexy, vulnerable, hat-covering-you-know-what look when presenting himself to Jack in SNIT.  Man it's getting hot in here!  Will post this and open some windows!

Very interesting, MPJ!  because in all honesty, I thought that the look was one of disbelief or incredulity.  It always amazes me how scenes in BBM can take on different interpretations and lights...

This is so true....Ennis in reality would have been too painful...although u never know how much pain many people have in their hearts and how they r suffering inside...it was great as to how Heath transformed into Ennis...

Yah,very often the best,more beautiful and poetical scenes in the movie are simply "orned" with music,silence or body language.And one understands and feels this "another" way of communication.

Music touches ones soul..whenever i hear the background music in the promos or the film i get chiils...its the music that makes the film even more beautiful, painful and addictive....it reveals pure love, affection, grief and immortal love

One of the greatest things about the Dozy Embrace is the absolute beauty and synchronicity of the music -- again, in an almost wordless scene.  This scene, the scnee leading up to it, and the final parting look of Jack are completely dominated by the music.  It is perhaps the most beautiful example of them all, although this very intense scene evokes feelings that are far from happy.

In my life I have watched so many films and background scrore....Till today in my 22 years of life there r only 2 background scores which haunts me and overwhelmes me everytime I watch them......
they are background score of Brokeback mountain and Crouching Tiger and hidden Dragon..
Now both these films r directed by Ang Lee..
So I can say that he is a master mind and he knows how to steal the heart of the audience...
He very well knows that a film is more precious, gives a more detailed message and leaves a stronger impact via music
so he sees that he gets the best background score for his films..

So true, smartestsonia.  The music has so very much to do with our perceptions of the scenes.  We know Gustavo Santaoaella is such a fine composer -- who wrote the score of CTHD?

I still have the tune of "The Wings" in my head almost at all times, almost three years later...

Thanks Kathy..thats exactly what I am saying..the tune is so strong and it has a lasting impact on our minds and hearts...we can relate to the tune with the pain in the film and thats why it overwhelmes us...even if I listen to the tune a thousand times it will be the same for me...there is some magic in the tune..the magic to just make everthing go still and leave us mersmerized....even though we feel heavy with the sadness in the film there is also a sweet joy of the pure and warm love shared by them which is complemented by this amazing and heartfelt music...

I really feel that the music is a strong motivator of the film..it gives me chills...

It is so soothing to the ears although my heart trembles hearing it....so its a mixed feeling of soothing love as well as an ocean of passion, pain and heartflet sadness :\'(

I have too many favourite scenes in the movie ..the 1st look, SNIT, reunion scene and when Jack tells Ennis that they could live together or sometimes he misses him so much that he can hardly stand it...However, if u notice in all these scenes we r anyways so emotional and overwhelmed and in the background this amazing masterpiece music is being played and the impact of the scenes is double or triple due to that...its like your eyes, ears and heart r completely submersed into Ennis and Jack and u can see or feel nothing but their love for each other......awwww...pure love is so beautiful and beyond words and I feel music can convey what words cant........touches my heart

Ypu picked too very constsating scenes -- one is very intense and volatile, whereas the other was very lyrical and tender.  Both are indeed very beautiful.

so true MPJ  The mountains was their home in true sense..Home is where the heart and I feel that most of them belonged to those mountains.I feel that it was the mountains who witnessed their beautiful love and  they connected with that place as they became one there...

I love the SNIT scenes as it shows a beautiful expression of pure and selfless love
Reunion scene is passionate and a burst out of all the emotions of being apart for 4 years
I also love the scene shot on the night of the reunion and that is because Ennis and Jack feel free again after 4 years
