I think I caught something during Ennis' breakdown that hasn't been mentioned yet.  After he crumples to the ground stating that he's "nothing, nowhere..." you can just barely hear him mumble "I can't stand it"  It refers to what he said earlier: "if you can't fix it, you gotta stand it"  Now, if I heard right that blows the scene into a whole new level.  It is an admission on Ennis' part that their "situation" wasn't nearly enough for him either.  If anyone goes back to the theatre to see it please see if you can confirm if what I heard was right.

I didn't hear as much of Ennis' mumbles as most of y'all.  Nor in this case.  But his crumpling tells the whole story of how he feels. Here's the apparently more philosophical of the two ("taking it" over the years better maybe) just devastated.

Obsolutely right artistically.   For me it was the most powerful and touching scene.

So often this kind of scene is put in because the story needs it and it gets acted without enough feeling, and ends up cheap/stupid. You just want to turn off the TV.  But this ....  !!!

yes, he says "I can't stand it anymore Jack"  that part cuts me up--grabs my heartsrrings..whoa.

This line always cracks me up.  Hopefully I remember it right; I don't have the screenplay book with me.

Ennis:  "The farthest I have ever been is around the coffee pot searching for the handle".

I like that one too, I think it also has something like "the farthest I have ever *traveled* is..." cause Jack is bringing up Mexico again.

can someone explain to me--why does ennis think of mexico and boys like jack after jack says when ennis says - have any better idea?  in last scene of them together--why does ennis suddenly ask about if jack's been to mexico?  how does that tie in together?  i have not been able to figure that out.
thanks

When I get home I am going to look up that line in the Screenplay book.  It has been in my head all day at work.

"I'm nothing.....I'm nobody.......(without you?)"

Loved that scene.  Me thinks they had a long heart to heart.  After all Ennis dropped Cassie right after this trip.

you are forgetting what he says right after that--"jack. i can't stand this (or it) anymore"  darn that gets to me.
sigh

Thank you Ang Lee for your eye on things. Thank you Jake and Heath for your outstanding performances...
Most of all...Thank you God for making me realize that if I'm a damn lucky son of a gun, I'll find someday, somehow, the love of my life...

if you make yourself the love of your life---i bet you will.  unfortunately, i never did (except with a friend who was not a lover type relationship--he was my boss and way older than me) and now i am old.  boo hoo- maybe next life.

"I wish I knew how to quit you."

I had a 3 hour long conversation with a straight friend who has seen the movie 5 times and read the story twice (I am gay and have seen the movie 3 times).  He's also a contemporary lit professor so I really made a point to drink in what he had to say.

Apparently, inasmuch as the film was made in the epic tradition, when Jack screams this line, it is actually a rather substantial, if not sagacious (and I know this sounds incongruous - but hear me out) prognostication. The only way that either can "quit" the other is through the ultimate catharsis - death.  But they are still not yet even 40 (more conflict) so probably the furthest thing from their minds. The reality is that Jack has absolutely NO desire to quit Ennis; he wants Ennis to acquiesce. It becomes more important to Jack to be with Ennis than to consider the societal ostracization that could cause. Ennis is still stuck in time. He has the ultimate conundrum - the love of his life and soulmate happens to be a man - a superficially minor but pragmatically huge issue. In the deep part of my mind, I think Ennis is trying to figure it all out. How can he make this thing work - but he's just too simple and unsure of himself. He can't figure it out.  For me, this is where the tragedy becomes so much more intense.  They never see each other again - not even in a pine box (as they might say).  Jack is cremated.  It is done. But, there is a beautiful side to that too. Ennis will always remember Jack as he was, in 1963, on Brokeback Mountain, not a cold body in a box with who knows what happened to his face.  There is something rich and clean and seraphic circumnavigating the edges of something overwhelming, ugly and peculiar.  Ennis is starting to realize he is "in love."

I know...I am now afraid of this topic. When I scroll these photos, it just brakes my heart. And I can't bear to see others with tears because I will shed mine too.

Good observation scruffy.  So much is held in those three words I couldn't easily analyse it--too much for my PBS brain right now ("mankind can't stand too much reality," as Eliot says).

So I hadn't got as far as thinking about the high seriousness of a real oath.

This fits my sense that there's a lot of really serious stuff here.  And this is one reason the movie is such a blockbuster.

Thanks!

PS Does honoUr plus seeing pickups/cowboy hats in your neck of the woods mean you're a Canadian?

Thanks for the kind words everyone.  I do try to contribute in a positive way.

Yes Jason, you're right.  I'm from the great white north.  But much like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, my hometown, Vancouver, is more cosmopolitan west.  I have to travel out of the city into the mountains to see the pick up trucks and cowboy hats.  Sometimes you have to go East to go West.

One other quote that is starting to get to me is "Why do we always have to be in the cold?"  I'm beginning to think that Jack is really asking why they always have to be at odds -- outsiders with each other and the world.  Hiding behind lies.  Unknowing.

Ethan, those photographs killed me.  They capture the mood beautifully.  Totally heartwrenching.  **tears burning Scruffy's eyes**

Just re-read this one on IMDB:

Jack Twist: Ever notice how a woman'll powder her nose before a party starts, and the powder it again when the party's over? Why powder your nose just to go home to bed?
Randall Malone: Don't know. Even if I wanted to know, couldn't get a word in with Lashawn long enough to ask. Woman talks a blue streak.

Jack to Ennis "Tell you what, we could a had a good life together, a f***in real good life. You wouldn't do it, Ennis, so what we got now is Brokeback Mountain. Everything built on that. It's all we got, boy, f***in all, so I hope you know that if you don't never know the rest."

It really would be easier if someone would just rip my heart out and stomp on it, this quote makes me a mess.

Cowboy...I have seen it now 4 times and I remember it as "You didn't want it Ennis".   I know this seems minor but I guess my point is that it makes it even harder to take...Jack saying that Ennis didn't even WANT their life together....not just that he was afraid of it.  Jack would have given up everything for Ennis...imagine his pain if he truly believed Ennis didn't want them to be together.  :'(

In the story it's "you wouldn't do it Ennis" in the movie it's "You didn't want it Ennis" yeah it's harder to take when it
sounds like Jack didn't think he wanted a life together.  But that scene when he drives off after the divroce brush off is
really gut wrenching.
