Just wanted to revive the discussion a little . . . What always amazes me about this scene--and I hope it doesn't sound too obvious--is that Jack knows exactly why Ennis has come to the tent. We know that Ennis is feeling very shy and fearful of their new intimacy, but Jack never seems to have a moment's doubt. He doesn't seem to wonder whether maybe Ennis has just come to hang out and talk or anything--rather, Jack just reaches out his hand and draws Ennis in. I guess maybe the unspoken communion between them is already so strong. Jack seems confident of Ennis's affection at this point, even if Ennis himself doesn't quite know exactly how to show it. But once Ennis lies down with him, his inhibitions vanish and he lets himself be swept away by the magic of feeling Jack's skin against him, fully, at last.
