The whole "my dad said rodeo cowboys were f***ers" or whatever exchange where Jack starts going crazy always makes me smile
"swear to God, I didn't know we were gonna get into this again. yeah I did.. I redlined all the way, couldn't get here fast enough" ;)

Hi, just found this place. Saw BBM for the 4th time tonight. :o
I didn't see that this was posted already, but actually, this quote is in the movie. Jack says it during a tracking shot of them from across the street of them walking to the bar after they first meet and get instructions from Aguirre.
Thought of this one. That's one of my favourite quotes. It was the one that stayed with me when I walked, dazed out of the movie theatre after my first BBM viewing
"Tell you what...truth is, sometimes I miss you so bad I can hardly stand it..."
It is a simple and powerful sentence. I wonder how many of us could get this one out. Jack is just romantic and adorbale.

Awww ... that's so sweet. :-*
I dont think that I could get something like that out ... I mean I feel it and would like to say it but think it would come out all false and soppy if i ever said anything like it. :-\
that's one of the great things about this movie, it's simple in so many ways, and yeah who would think "I wish I knew how to quit you" would make you cry, it sounds weird!
and this one too:
Jack Twist: "You sit down before I knock your ignorant ass into next week!"
Thought of this one.

A few more
Ennis: "I got a say this to you one time, Jack, and I ain't foolin. What I don't know, all them things I don't know could get you killed if I should come to know them."
At least Ennis was showing his true feeling verbally.
Jack: "You know, friend, this is a goddamn bitch of a unsatisfactory situation. You used a come away easy. It's like seeing the pope now."
Jack: "Try this one. I'll say it just one time. Tell you what, we could a had a good life together, a !@#$ real good life. You wouldn't do it, Ennis, so what we got now is Brokeback Mountain. Everything built on that. It's all we got, boy, !@#$ all, so I hope you know that if you don't ever know the rest. Count the damn few times we been together in twenty years. Measure the !@#$ short leash you keep me on, then ask me about Mexico and then tell me you'll kill mne for needin it and not hardly ever gettin it. You got no !@#$ idea how bad it gets. I'm not you. I can't make it on a couple a high-attitude f***s once or twice ayear. You're too much for me, Ennis, you son of a whoreson bitch. I wish I knew how to quit you."
My heart always ponds when I see this scene then gets broken after that.
Do you think the line about "if i come to know them" was showing his feelings? I find that enigmatical myself.

Went to my 4th viewing this afternoon...and this scene made me cry...I always knew what was coming next...but today it was more poignant, I was hurting for Jack...and then Ennis!
One quote I really loved is the one when Ennis and Jack are mounting horses, following the sheeps. Jack plays harmonica and Ennis says something about the sheeps being scared by Jack's playing and loose themselves again. This is not actually the first time Ennis complaints about Jack's musical talents at the harmonica. ;)
Help someone! ???
Not to mention the way Ennis looks at Jack after saying it. Very intimate moment. :-*
I think "It could be like this, just like this always" isn't from the short story,is unique to the movie.
When we first saw it, my friend and I were quite amused by this line:
Jack: "I'm not you...I can't make it on a couple a high-altitude f**ks once or twice a year!"
the context of course is just so heartwrenching...but we still love this line ;)
Poor Ennis - one can infer over the course of twenty years, Jack and Ennis had sex less than 100 times? Ennis is surely deeply connected with his Jack.

Wow, that would be something to get Ang, Jake and Heath to give a commentary!!!!
How do we find out what'll be on the dvd? Do we have to wait 4 or 5 months to find out? :(
I'm gonna do some research....
Jack Twist: Jack Twist.
Ennis Del Mar: Ennis.
Jack Twist: Your parents just stopped at Ennis?
Ennis Del Mar: Ennis Del Mar.
Just came back from my 3rd viewing tonight, and boo-hoo'ed all through the movie. It seems like the more I see it and the better I get to know it, the more sensitized I get to Ennis & Jack's pain and loss. At the same time, I really treasure those times, early in the movie, when they're together and happy.
Anyway, I was watching closely tonight, and I caught a discrepancy with this exhange:QuoteJack Twist: Jack Twist.
Ennis Del Mar: Ennis.
Jack Twist: Your parents just stopped at Ennis?
Ennis Del Mar: Ennis Del Mar.
In the movie, what Jack actually says is, "Your folks just stopped at Ennis?"
That sounds much more realistic for two uneducated, inarticulate boys from out West.
Do you think the line about "if i come to know them" was showing his feelings? I find that enigmatical myself.
I think so. It is a typical response from Ennis who longs for attachment with Jack but could not deal with his unfaithfulness. Ennis is a violent person and that is how it copes with his emotion.
For my english class I hafta choose a movie I wanna analyze and write about. Problem is you need access to the movie so you can get all the dialogue and scenes right. I loved Brokeback Mountain so much I couldn't do any other movie, but it would help if I could see the script. Anybody know where I can get that?
This is from the book, but I loved it because it demonstrated Ennis and Jack's intimacy and Ennis' crazy, complicated love for Jack,
"...Ennis (to Jack), not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin."

Awww ... very sweet *Sniff* :-*
Jack: Anything interesting up there in heaven?
Ennis: I was just sending up a prayer of thanks. ;D ;D ;D
Oh mine..who would have thought Ennis could give such humorous response? Only to his beloved Jack. Jack was his kingdom.

Ennis: For you forgettin to bring that harmonica. I'm enjoyin the peace and quiet.
Jack: You know, it could be this way. Just like this, always.
This is from the book:
"Shot a coyote just first light," he told Jack the next evening, sloshing his face with hot water, lathering up soap and hoping his razor had some cut left in it, while Jack peeled potatoes. "Big son of a bitch. Balls on him size a apples. I bet he'd took a few lambs. Looked like he could a eat a camel. You want some a this hot water?
Why would a man without latent homosexual tendencies make such a comment? Or maybe he wasjust 'feeling' Jack out...

This line always cracks me up. Hopefully I remember it right; I don't have the screenplay book with me.
Ennis: "The farthest I have ever been is around the coffee pot searching for the handle".

I like that one too, I think it also has something like "the farthest I have ever *traveled* is..." cause Jack is bringing up Mexico again.
Ennis: I sure wrang it out a hunderd times thinkin about you!
I can't even imagine!

... and Lureen says, "You don't think I'm moving too fast, do you?"

two seconds later... off with the bra!
That was funny!

Ever hear of "mountain oysters"? You don't have to have latent anything to remark about an animals parts that's just how they talked about such things they were ranch hands plain and simple.
Freud said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"
May West said: "Are you glad to see me or is that a pistol in your pocket" - could have been a pistol.
I sometimes say: "Look at the rack on that buck" and I ain't looking at no deer.
"I wish I knew how to quit you!" -- the line sums up just how strong their bond is despite years of struggle and only brief moments of being together. Jack, despite him being the more 'sexual' one, going as far as to cheat with others for what he 'needs', can't find ANY kind of substitute for Ennis. It's incredible, a shollow-man so deeply rooted in his far-away highly unlikely relationship -- that's beyond true love.

sweetlilg; Please tell me if you find a way... I know how you feel - I can't seem to read anything or see any pics or clips from the movie before I feel tears welling up. This story has moved more then anything else I have ever read or watched
I give up about stoping crying...
Just that line: "I wish I knew how to quit you!" started me to cry on my third viewing.... from there till the very end of the movie.
Git watery eyes (again!) posting this.
What was it they said when they were on the mountain and they were sick of eating beans... Jack said something about killing and eating one of the sheep. And, Ennis said that they were getting paid to watch the sheep, not eat them. Or, maybe the otherway around. Anyway, If they had killed and eaten a sheep, then, they could have said "I love ewe!!!!!"
Ha ha ha

Yes, and then Ennis' response sends 'the final volt of emotion' toward you, I have never seen two lines that so well complement each other ( I had actually started crying when Jack said his line -- put Ennis' response just nailed it) .... "Then why don't you? Why don't you let me be? It's because of you, Jack, that I'm like this...I'm nobody...I'm nothing..."
To me that line shows just how muchEnnis loved Jack. Ennis was not 'blaming' Jack for his problems, he was telling Jack that their long-away consistenly barracaded relationship had left Ennis a lonely, confused man who could not live a normal life. Simply put, Ennis has spent his whole life that way, and the brief moments with Jack rearranged his confusion into happiness and expression. Ennis, at this point, cannot handle the feasibility of Jack leaving, that would eventually kill him :(

MidtownFreak; I so agree with you! Even if he wasn't able to say it out loud, this was Ennis' way of telling Jack how much he loves him. It's so heartbreaking to see how they embrace on the ground; after Ennis has said "Im nobody...I'm nothing..." Jack understood that Ennis loved him, and that it was tearing Ennis apart... :'(
After Jack's flashback to the first summer, when Ennis comes up from behind and embraces him; when he's "sleeping on his feet like a horse" - Jack is thinking "Let be, let be..." I wonder what that meant.... was Jack trying to quit Ennis here? Or was he just realizing that they would never be able to get into a "normal" long-time relationship; they would have to continue meeting in the middle of nowhere; like they'd done for 20 years? In the end, Jack's dad is also telling Ennis that Jack had meant to take his Texas ranch-neighbor up to Lightnin' Flat to get the ranch into shape...?? I just can't stand the possibility that Jack maybe had found somebody else than Ennis... that just makes everything sadder... But I guess Jack needed to pursue happiness; and maybe he had to come to terms with the fact that he would never be truly happy with Ennis...
Any views on this?
I rather doubt that Jack would have been successful with Randall. Randall was dry in personality, lust-driven, and in no way a 'good' person. Jack is no angel, either.. but the major reason he really feel in deep love with Ennis was because of Ennis' loneliness and innocence. Ennis' love for Jack was real, completely driven by deep emotion, Jack's acknowledgement of this drove him deeper as well. Hell, that's exactly why Jack said it.. "I wish I knew how to quit you!"

Hi everyone, that last embrace/cuddle and that look in Jack's eyes were for me the images of their reconciliation with the fact that they weren't going to live together, but that their trysts could yet be fulfilling. We are led to believe that Jack "fooled around", but never that he found somebody else. Jack's father embodies those people that refuse to understand that there is one special love, he would put all of Jack's friends on the same level.
That scene was gut-wrenching, I cried when Jack started yelling at Ennis, then choked up when Ennis replied with "just let me be." in translation : "Without you, life is nothing."
Ennis's last line : "Jack, I swear...." What is he thinking ? For me : I swear, it's so bad I can hardly stand it. :-[

The whole movie was a constant song, or better, hymn, to love..
Looks, lines, movements, symbolizations...everything...
"Jack, I swear"..."I'm nothing...nowhere..."
The 2 shirts hugging one another..
I don't know.. I've written many things about the movie on my blog... I've written them after my first view of the movie.. I did it without tears.
Now..after my 4th.. I can't write anything more..
Since I first saw the movie, I'm in a constant bad mood.. I think it's because I don't know whether I'll find this kind of bonding in my life..The kind of Love that I was looking for all my life but I couldn't put into words. Then suddenly...A movie..a film..came up and depticted the vague yet so precice image I had about Love in my head....
I feel happy .. HAPPY about this movie... I'm 24..yet I've become very cynical in the last years through many difficulties... I haven't cried like this watching a movie for 3 years now...
I don't know what to say...I could just write forever...
Thank you Ang Lee for your eye on things. Thank you Jake and Heath for your outstanding performances...
Most of all...Thank you God for making me realize that if I'm a damn lucky son of a gun, I'll find someday, somehow, the love of my life...

And Ennis getting his gear, ignoring Jack, the wordless look he gives him after that line... okay, I have to stop, there's a lump in my throat now.
Ennis's line "Lighten up on me, Jack" just before their huge argument is another one that tore at my heart.
A whole week together and Ennis hadn't been able to tell Jack that the next time couldn't be until November. I don't think the reason is simply that Ennis couldn't bring himself to say it. He was used to Jack's reactions.
Being so in love with Ennis, I haven't thought a lot about the character Jack, but it does seem that he changed. At the beginning of the film he is more light hearted. In that last argument, his frustration at not having a life with Ennis has built up so much, he becomes more demanding, more nagging even (I don't blame him !) Is he becoming less understanding ? Perhaps, but then they kiss and make up :) :)
I think Jack might have seriously considered giving up on Ennis. Then he realises that Ennis could never give him up... so move never stops growing, does it ?
Hello stephan, your observation is one possibility. I am sure this topic will be of interest to you.
Did Jack Finally Give up on Ennis? (http://www.ennisjack.com/index.php?topic=304.0)
Another qote is perhaps the three strongest words in film history. "Jack, I swear."
A lot of people have been adding to the line such as ..I swear if I had to do it all over again I would etc. But I don't think we have to add words. Here's why...
To swear to someone is the highest form of verbal contract one human can pledge to another. That is why swearing in oaths are saved for only the most important ceremonies in society. It is an oath of allegence and loyalty. It is an offer of mind, body and soul to another. Knights swore an oath to Kings. People swear allegence to God and country. It is without a doubt the highest honour one person can give and it is perhaps the first time Ennis, who is said not the swearing kind, meant it.
I've been a tortured Brokeback Mountain zombie for a week now. It's really embarassing sobbing in public every time I see a pickup truck or a cowboy hat.

When Jack and Ennis showed up to untangle the two flocks of sheep. Jack pretty much wanted to to just say, "f*** this!' and Ennis said (to paraphrase)
" We got do it Jack, Joe Aquirre expects us to. We gotta stick with it.'
And of course Jack does stick with it.
This little scene tells me alot about the characters and thier blossoming love.
I agree, it showed they compliment each other. Oddly it's Jack who looks for a job there again...You are so right. They do complimet each other.... and Jack went back was looking for more than a job, hehehQuote
I think I caught something during Ennis' breakdown that hasn't been mentioned yet. After he crumples to the ground stating that he's "nothing, nowhere..." you can just barely hear him mumble "I can't stand it" It refers to what he said earlier: "if you can't fix it, you gotta stand it" Now, if I heard right that blows the scene into a whole new level. It is an admission on Ennis' part that their "situation" wasn't nearly enough for him either. If anyone goes back to the theatre to see it please see if you can confirm if what I heard was right.

You are right. He does indeed say he can't stand it anymore. My take on that...and Jacks reaction...is that Jack finally lets go of his dream...he realizes that Ennis is hurting so much as a result of their relationship...and that he is not gettting what he needs...and he attempts to move on and let Ennis go so they can both stop hurting. Of course it doesn't work...but Jack does try.
This is from the book, but I loved it because it demonstrated Ennis and Jack's intimacy and Ennis' crazy, complicated love for Jack,
"...Ennis (to Jack), not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin."
Two of my favorites are recently:
Ennis: "Now you're sleepin' on your feet like a horse." <siiiigh> could be I just love that scene to pieces, but the tone of his voice when he says that...!! :-[
another one:
Ennis: (responding to Jack's harmonica playing) You'll run them sheep off again if ya don't quiet down.
maybe it's the look and smile he gives Jack after that that's so sweet...but I love the playful nature of things between them then, and how Jack doesn't even need to acknowledge him, but you *know* that he's grinning like a fool inside. ;DQuote
those are 2 sweet scenes... for me I would like to add that brief heavy-lidded look that Jack right before he says "Ennis thats the most said in two week." If I am not mistaken that is the look of love.

Yes. 'little darlin' to Jack from the story was the sweetest thing I have read in a long time. Two little words that mean love.

I love "friend, this is a goddamned bitch of an unsatisfactory situation"
You know people laugh a bit at that but it also just says it.

I didn't hear as much of Ennis' mumbles as most of y'all. Nor in this case. But his crumpling tells the whole story of how he feels. Here's the apparently more philosophical of the two ("taking it" over the years better maybe) just devastated.
Obsolutely right artistically. For me it was the most powerful and touching scene.
So often this kind of scene is put in because the story needs it and it gets acted without enough feeling, and ends up cheap/stupid. You just want to turn off the TV. But this .... !!!
This line always cracks me up. Hopefully I remember it right; I don't have the screenplay book with me.
Ennis: "The farthest I have ever been is around the coffee pot searching for the handle".
I like that one too, I think it also has something like "the farthest I have ever *traveled* is..." cause Jack is bringing up Mexico again.
can someone explain to me--why does ennis think of mexico and boys like jack after jack says when ennis says - have any better idea? in last scene of them together--why does ennis suddenly ask about if jack's been to mexico? how does that tie in together? i have not been able to figure that out.
thanks
When I get home I am going to look up that line in the Screenplay book. It has been in my head all day at work.
"I'm nothing.....I'm nobody.......(without you?)"
Loved that scene. Me thinks they had a long heart to heart. After all Ennis dropped Cassie right after this trip.
Thank you Ang Lee for your eye on things. Thank you Jake and Heath for your outstanding performances...
Most of all...Thank you God for making me realize that if I'm a damn lucky son of a gun, I'll find someday, somehow, the love of my life...

I had a 3 hour long conversation with a straight friend who has seen the movie 5 times and read the story twice (I am gay and have seen the movie 3 times). He's also a contemporary lit professor so I really made a point to drink in what he had to say.
Ethan - Thanks for making Cowboy shed the tears...AGAIN today. :'( I keep this up, I'm gonna own a kleenex factory.
I know...I am now afraid of this topic. When I scroll these photos, it just brakes my heart. And I can't bear to see others with tears because I will shed mine too.
Just re-read this one on IMDB:

Randall Malone: Don't know. Even if I wanted to know, couldn't get a word in with Lashawn long enough to ask. Woman talks a blue streak.

Jack to Ennis "Tell you what, we could a had a good life together, a f***in real good life. You wouldn't do it, Ennis, so what we got now is Brokeback Mountain. Everything built on that. It's all we go, boy, f***in all, so I hope you know that if you don't never know the rest."
It really would be easier if someone would just rip my heart out and stomp on it, this quote makes me a mess.

In the story it's "you wouldn't do it Ennis" in the movie it's "You didn't want it Ennis" yeah it's harder to take when it
sounds like Jack didn't think he wanted a life together. But that scene when he drives off after the divroce brush off is
really gut wrenching.

It was born out of fear. Ennis feared the "What If's..." (what if someone sees us, what if someone knows we live together, what if my daddy killed that guy), Jack fears the "lonliness and isolation" (not being able to say I love you, not being with the one he loves, being stuck in a marriage he didn't want, being apart from Ennis)
You are right. He does indeed say he can't stand it anymore. I know this is old, but I just had to comment on it, because it describes what I feel about that scene so perfectly (mirrored by what I just decided to do in my own life, with my own boyfriend). The things this movie (and the discussions with you, folks) tells us about ourselves are just mindboggling. Love it!

Ouch!
Oh, and another quote:the movie doesn't allow in words what Ennis wish to speak: but in the book as you mention ENNIS sates: I like doin it with women, yeh, but Jesus H., ain't nothin like this.
"What about you Ennis", Jack says after he tells him he redlined it all the way, couldn't get there fast enough (so sweet!). He wants to hear how it was for Ennis, and we see Ennis's face, what he would express, if he could, we know how he was waiting, unable to do anything but think of Jack that whole day, maybe for weeks? But Jack doesn't. He is behind Ennis. Actually, in the story, Ennis does say something about how he "wrang it out" thinking of Jack. I like the way everything is reduced to his facial expression in the movie. It makes a stronger point of Ennis's "wordlessness".
monicita
I remember that in the last scene with Jack, the argument was about Ennis not being able to quit his job like in the past. But at the end, love is more important than his job. Just like in the old days. :-[ :-[ :-[
I love when Ennis is looking for Alma at the store and asks Monroe where she is and he says in the condiments aisle. Ennis says the what? Katsup! Oh!
Too funny
Jim
no it was not mustard..it was Ketchup!
One other quote that is starting to get to me is "Why do we always have to be in the cold?" I'm beginning to think that Jack is really asking why they always have to be at odds -- outsiders with each other and the world. Hiding behind lies. Unknowing.Scruffy, now I'm back to BBM after a break.
I am looking for a quote if anyone can help:"you've got nothing, you don't need nothing" ??
Towards the end of the movie when Ennis is with Alma Jr. he says something like"if you don't have much, you don't need much"
Does anyone remember this?
That really struck at me!

QuoteEnnis's last line : "Jack, I swear...." What is he thinking ? For me : I swear, it's so bad I can hardly stand it.
Sob! :'( :'( :'(
My bet would be:
"Jack, I swear.... I loved you!"
O.K. There we go the sobbing chameau is crying over himself...AGAIN! :'(
Alma: You know, your friend could come inside, have a cup of coffee...
Ennis: He's from Texas.
Alma: Texans don't drink coffee?
I know it's not much, but it makes me laugh everytime I think about it. Probably because I am a Texan, and I drink a LOT of coffee. I mean, usually at least a pot a day. When I go out to Denny's at night, I drink at least ten cups, black. That kind of freaks my friends out. They put like ten sugars and two creams in each cup, and I drink them straight black.
This thread is a real rollercoaster of emotions, man.
Also, I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but when Cassie asks Ennis his name, he first answers "Ennis", then there's a small pause and he says "Del Mar". It made me smile.
Oh, thank you. :) I totally missed that thread. You guys really talk a lot about every little detail, I love it.
Of course! It's just that the only person I know who saw the movie is my mother, and when I ramble on and on to her about everything I loved in the movie she just sits there saying "Yeah...yeah..." So, it's a nice change for me. :P ;D
ennis: tent don't look right.
jack: it ain't going nowhere; leave it be.
ennis: that harmonica don't sound right, neither.
jack: it got a little flat when the mare threw me.
ennis: i thought you said that mare couldn't throw you.
jack: well, she got lucky.
ennis: well, if i got lucky, that harmonica would o' broke too.
jack smiles (priceless)

Will have to stop reading if I want to stop crying!
In the last scene together Ennis says as Jack holds him, "I can't stand it no more." or something like that. It's not in the story or screenplay, a Heath adlib I suppose but it just wrecks me cause Jack says like he always does, "It alright, it's alright.......damn you Ennis." They ain't ever gonna get it right and it's killing me.
One exchange that breaks my heart:
Ennis: You got a better idea?
Jack: I did once...
First, when Ennis sees Jack after 4 years. "Jack F..ng Twist!" He says it with such joy, passion and happiness! And the smile on his face says it all too.
Hi, guys! Ethan, thank you so much for running this site and forums! Unfortunately the film is not on in Russia yet and I am afraid it won't be on at all but I saw it already 8 times (3 times in London and 5 times in Amsterdam).
My favourite quote is the whole screenplay, but there are 2 parts which I LOVE above all:
First, when Ennis sees Jack after 4 years. "Jack F..ng Twist!" He says it with such joy, passion and happiness! And the smile on his face says it all too.
Second, when Jack says "Ya know, it can be like this... just like this... always". Every time I hear him saying that, I hope that Ennis agrees. It is one of the turning points when everything could have been changed. "That old, cold time on the mountain when they owned the world and nothing seemed wrong" - quote from a short story.
Hi, Stephan! Thank you! Indeed, it is great that I have found this forum. It has been unbearable to hold my thoughts to myself and have none to discuss them with.
Like I said, the whole screenplay is a quote. But sometimes faces of Jack and Ennis speak louder than words.
I cry every time I see Ennis comes up behind Jack and they stay in silence at the fire :'( :'( :'(
Besides, you need to hear VOICES and INTONATION of Heath and Jake to get a real sense of the film.
Quote: "Jack, lighten up on me! We can hunt in November, kill a nice elk". The audience sometimes laughs here, maybe thinking of the elk they killed in 1963.
Well let's hope the translators stay true to the original !

The last sentence in the review is "And last but not least, old gays in cowboy hats look pitiful". I threw the magazine away. I wonder if the critic has seen the film at all. :( :(Overestimated?! In comparison to such screen gold dust like Munich, King Kong etc? :o :o

Do you think the line about "if i come to know them" was showing his feelings? I find that enigmatical myself.
I think so. It is a typical response from Ennis who longs for attachment with Jack but could not deal with his unfaithfulness. Ennis is a violent person and that is how it copes with his emotion.
I like the way you put that ... I think Ennis was privately hurt that Jack was seeing someone else who he might be physically attracted too ... someone who could potentially replace himself. However, Ennis masks this as being homophobia due to his own insecurities ... it kinda makes you wanna hug both of them really. :-
For some reason the quote that I seem to remember the most is right after Ennis shoots the elk and Jack pushes him and screams, and then Ennis says something along the lines of "I was tired of your dumb ass always missin'!" and pushed Jack back. It just made me smile for some reason. :)

Hi Russianman! How anyone can think the film is overestimated is beyond me. Old guys in cowboy hats still look hunky to me. I didn't read all your posts. Did you see the movie someplace else? You said it isn't out there yet. Actually the one thing I was a little disappointed in was Ennis' make-up at the end of the movie. I know in the story he is supposed to have a growth on his eye, but in the movie what they did to his right eye doesn't look very realistic. Also, I thought the guys looked older than they should. Maybe, thay just wanted to stress the toll their unhappy lives had taken on them????? Or maybe guys who do that kind of physical labor and don't have the means to take care of themselves better (Ennis) look like that???????? Fortunately I don't know. My husband is 40 and he looks a hell of a lot better (age wise) than that. - Nancy
said by Ennis, after a discussion of how tired they were of eating beans and Jack suggested shooting a sheep:
"we're supposed to guard the sheep, not eat em"
This line caught me off guard; I thought it was funny!
This is from the book, but I loved it because it demonstrated Ennis and Jack's intimacy and Ennis' crazy, complicated love for Jack,
"...Ennis (to Jack), not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin."

Oh mine..who would have thought Ennis could give such humorous response? Only to his beloved Jack. Jack was his kingdom.
Just re-read this one on IMDB:

yeah it was funny, I can tell they were trying to make it clear that was a big lie when
Jack said he was running off with HER.
You know it's funny. My mind played tricks on me. The first time I saw BBM I actually thought I heard Jack saying he was having an affair with the ranch manager. My mind knew the truth. The second time I realized that is not what he said. This made more sense given the exchange in their last meeting.
Oh, and another quote:

I love all Ennis' humor with Jack, the only person he can let his guard down with and be funny (except with his daughter at Thanksgiving dinner). I really love to watch the amusement in his face at the free spirited nature of others, Jack and even Cassie Cartwright. It's like he just wishes he could be like that, and with Jack he can. I tell you between Heath, Jake and Michelle there was some phenomenal acting going on there. Between the intonation of their voices and the expressiveness of their faces.......it blows me away. I read the short story and I would never have been able to figure out how to deliver those lines with such meaning. I read it now and I can HEAR their voices, the melodic and melancholic quality of Jack's voice when he says, "It could be like this always." How do they come up with that? The silent look on Ennis' face when he learns of Jack's affair from his dad!!!! When Michelle wipes away her tear and reaches for her coffee cup. Unfu---ing believable!!!!! I've never seen acting like that in my life.
Not to put anyone down, but I watched "Walk the Line" last night. There is just NO comparison. What were they thinking at the Golden Globes???????? - Nancy
Jack: Anything interesting up there in heaven?Great post, Nancy! The acting is superb, definitely. And I like what you say about Ennis' humor with Jack. In fact, I think this is how he expresses his love to Jack. He cannot articulate it and may not even be really conscious of it (or willing to look at it). But when he says things like (paraphrase, since I don't have the screenplay), You're gonna scare them sheep off again, if you keep up that noise (Jack's playing the harmonica and they've just separated the sheep from the other herd), he's got this smile and steady eye on Jack. It is full of trust and recognition. It is wide expression of joy, comfort and, for Ennis, an openness. I love this scene.
And I agree with you about "Walk the Line." It's a fine movie and I love J. Cash and June, their story. But there's no comparison. And this is true also with "Crash," another fine movie. BBM is a story/film of an era. There are galaxies between these movies.
Thanks for the affirmation.. I also saw Crash. Nothing in comparison to BBM. I am not gay, but I consider this the best love story I have ever seen. The word is that Reese Witherspoon will be the Oscar for best supporting actress. Michelle Williams blows her away. I surely hope all the BBM people get what they deserve. Thanks for responding. -Nancy

I like so many of your posts on this thread, Nancy. Ennis's humour : yes, it's only possible with Jack, isn't it ? Ennis knows it too, I think that's why he says to Cassie "I guess I was never any fun anyway, was I?" No Jack = no fun. :-[
Ennis feels so natural around Jack, the expression of his face can be so mild and funny. He cannot say it with words but with his eyes...! The way he looks at Jack when they sit at the fire! Jack is the only friend and only love that Ennis has.
Hi Russianman!
I like what you say about the scenes when the two are sitting by the fire. So much love is conveyed just through looks. It is also what makes the movie so strong: Most of it is in the way people in this movie look at each other. Not only Jack and Ennis, but Alma and Ennis, Randall and Jack, the Rodeo Clown and Jack, Aguirre and his binoculars, Jack and Ennis across the mountain, when they are in different camps. I could go on and on.

lol I laugh everytime I hear this! Randy Quaid did a great job of Aguirre. :)
The last words that we hear Heath Ledger say to Jake Gyllenhaal on-screen (during the flashback).
'Got to go...see you in the morning.'

tpe, that is indeed a very beautiful and PBS quote. Ennis is saying to Jack that he'll be back... he'll always be back. :-[
but most of all: the look in Jack's eyes, when Ennis is driving away for the very last time. So beautiful and mournful, the juxtaposition of the flashback scene and this goodbye. Sniff.

tpe, monicita, your thoughts are giving me such pleasure... the kind that a good cry might help, of course ! :-*
I'm thinking of that first day, just before they go up to the mountain with the sheep, Ennis looks at Jack who's trying to stay on the horse. They have scarcely spoken to each other, but that look could mean so many things. For example, admiration.
Stephan :-
I really don't think he ever thinks of Jack in that light until Jack makes his move. I think it is so ooutside of Ennis' reality, that the thought would never enter his mind at least not consciously. I don't think he was ever sexually aattracted to Jack before the first tent scene. He fell in love with Jack, the person, not in lust with Jack, the sex object. Maybe, I am just being naive?

Bonjour, Nancy ! Your point is also my point of view, actually. "Sex with Jack" was not an option the first day (not in the film, anyway, I still haven't read the story which I bought more than a month ago). Friendship, however, can be born and start to grow in a matter of minutes. I thought Ennis's look might be interpreted as admiration in the sense : it might not be so bad having to spend the summer working with this person." StephanQuote
Hi Stephan, The story doesn't indicate any sexual interest on Ennis' part prior to their first coupling to the best of my recollection. But then again I don't know that Anne mentions any longing on Jack's part either, and I see this in the film. I thought it was great that Ange Lee credits not only all the principals involved in the story and film, but Ennis and Jack as well. That really got me. They are so real to me. I have a hard time remembering they are just fictional characters. :) - Nancy
Tom, I think you are so right. Perhaps the frindship first theory is more prevalent in gay relationship? (I am not gay) Does that sound stupid? We are all different and enter relationships differently despite our orientations.Quote

I also think that the at start the boys are getting to know each other and like each other as friends. Ennis would never even let sx with Jack enter his mind. It's only when Jack takes his hand that the sexual chemistry erupts, and with what passion.
I love this, people always say to me that (when I was younger ) I always went out with people who I was friends with first. I think you can love a person without the sexual attraction being there at first.
This is why the movie hit home with me, the realism of the situation and with which Heath and Jake played it, rang more true with me than any other formulaic love story before it on film.

Here's another wordless "quote" that I rediscovered with immense pleasure at my last viewing : the smile on Jack's face while Ennis is talking and talking by the campfire - the smile that Ennis notices, and Jack has to explain : "that's more words than you've spoken in 2 weeks."YES! That little curl of the lip - so endearing.

Hi evaeryone! Saw the movie again today and am still perplexed in the second tent scene - a beautiful scene. Someone says, "I'm sorry. I"m sorry." And someone responds, "It's alright." Who says what? - Nancy

Nancy, after they kiss Ennis says, "I'm sorry....I'm so sorry" and Jack replies with a nod, "It's ok."
Not what I heard...there were 3 "It's OK" and no "I'm sorry"....I really wanted to agree with all of ya' ...but will believe the subtitles when I see them...and stay on my 'ears' side for the time being.

Sorry ma'lady, you couldn't have heard 3 "It's OK" unless they changed the sound track for foreign distribution and I can see no reason to do that. As for sub titles, I had to enhance the sound enormously and could still just barely hear what was whispered. If the people who do the subs didn't also enhance the sound they couldn't have heard it and just guessed at what was said.
Nancy: You can bet your last penny that what I said Ennis and Jack say is, in fact, what they say. I have offered to make the clip available to frog123 and if you have Windows Movie Maker and know how to use it I will make it available to you also. Then, you can hear for yourselves. (Just barely) If I had a way to get the music out and leave the dialog it would be much clearer.

I too was perplex, because on the first 5 viewings, I never heard any words. Perhaps I was too entranced by what my eyes were seeing ! But on the last viewing, the sound was excellent, the music was much better throughout the film, and I finally heard the I'm sorrys and the It's oks. Could it be that some copies of the film have better sound than others ?

Absolutely...I have seen it eight times and whether in the screen play or not there is definitely an I'M SORRY in the movie before the It's OK (which I think is repeated). I know because at first I could not tell WHO was saying the I'm sorry....but it is DEFINITELY there!!!

Yes I heard the two "I'm sorry" and the "it's ok" when I saw the movie. And I remember that they're also translated in the french version too.
Hi, guys! I am in Amsterdam now and yesterday watched the BBM for the 9th time!
One question. In the scene when they show Laureen with a newly-born Bobby, what does Laureen's mother say? To me it sounds something like: "I've got 2 boxes of formula for u!" Do I hear it right and if yes, what are these boxes? Please help!

Hi Russianman!
In my ears, she does say "I've got two boxes of formula" and after that it transpires that they remained in the car and Jack is sent to get them, thereby excluding him from the happy family scene...

Ennis's mouth is closed when Jack says his first of three Its Allrights. Watch closely. Listening only will not help, unless you determine that the same person is speaking during the disputed dialogue.

I heard "its all right" sadi 3 times. The first one - the one that could sound like "I'm sorry" - is very slurred and whispered almost to the point of sounding more like "saw right".

Will this ever be over.
Ennis had all day to apologize for whatever he is suppsed to be sorry for.
Why at this moment in the tent scene.
I'm wondering if we could get the clip off youtube and feed it through an EVP maker. I don't know how well that would work, though.
Will this ever be over. Ennis had all day to apologize for whatever he is supposed to be sorry for. Why at this moment in the tent scene. I cannot wait for DVD English version. This debate will be over. If I am incorrect and Ennis actually says something I will have "Crash #1" tattooed to my body. That is how sure I am!
I am surprised no one has yet mentioned the final hug between Ennis and Jack. When Ennis falls to his knees in Jack's arms he again breaths out something like "I can't stand it no more".

Where are you going to put the Crash tattoo bnjmn3? After my second or third viewing I heard the "I'm sorry" whispered by Ennis and the "it's alright" reply by Jack. I talked about it somewhere here but can't remember where.
Saw it again tonite. Jack's lips even move at the first Alright! Watch Jack next time. Listening only will not do it.
Patriot1, thank you for your audio download. Once again I hear those 2 unscripted exchanges in the tent scene. I am surprised no one has yet mentioned the final hug between Ennis and Jack. When Ennis falls to his knees in Jack's arms he again breaths out something like "I can't stand it no more". Also not in the script. I think I am going to go see it again tonight one more time and will be listening very hard because there are a couple of other places I think I heard faint ad libbed lines. I think any of them were intended but were rather a result of the intensity of the scenes and the commitment of these 2 fine actors to that intensity.
I beg to differ it has been mentioned in an earlier thread in regard that I though people had forgotten how intense and mind boggling the last words of Ennis had spoken to Jack, it makes me cry every time I read anything to this matter , so here I go again get the Kleenex and wipes my tears
If my recollection serves me right it ougth be in the quotes earlier days

Patriot1, is there a thread for the "deceased" post card. I finally caught it tonight, said, "Are we still on for November? I can meet you at Pine Creek."
I think this is what you are talking about. From the screenplay with stage directions:
JACK I'm not you. I can't make it on a couple of high-altitude f***s one or twice a year.
(pause)
You're too much for me, Ennis, you son of a whoreson bitch.
(pause)
I wish I knew how to quit you.
WE PULL BACK NOW
Like vast close of steam from thermal springs in winter, the years of things unsaid and now unsayable--admissions, declaration, shames, guilts, fears--rise around them.
ENNIS stands as if heartshot, face gray and deep lined. Fights a silent battle, grimaces.
ENNIS Then why don't you?! Why don't you let me be? It's because of you Jack, that I'm like this. I'm nothin. I'm nowhere.
JACK starts toward him, but ENNIS jerks away.
ENNIS (CONT'D) Get the f*** off me!
JACK moves toward him again, and this time ENNIS doesn't resist.
JACK Come here...it's all right. It's all right...damn you, Ennis.
And then...they hug one another, a fierce, desperate embrace--managing to torque things almost to where they have been, for that they've just said is no news: as always, nothing ended, nothing begun, nothing resolved.

I don't know if anyone heard this, but I can swear that when Alma, Jr. is talking about her wedding she says, Jr. is gonna sing and Monroe will cater. Pretty insignificant, but I wonder if I heard wrong. This doesn't make any sense? - Nancy
Wedding'll be June fifth at the Methodist Church, Jenny's singing, and Monroe's gonna cater the reception.
Quote
I don't remember seeing a thread dealing just with Ennis' post card to Jack that came back.
Going to start one?Quote
I don't know. Should I? The post cards say a lot about the relationship. Maybe a thread on all 4 of them and the unseen ones.

I also find this one very funny, but in the same time so sad, because I feel Alma's distress to see her husband letting her for a man, and yet triying to be polite with Jake (maybe to prevent them being alone together again)... :'(

welcome mrs delmar :) join the nuthouse :);D
Hi, I'm new here... and i love all the quotes I've read. Here's one of my favorites... :-* ;DMs Delmar that's probably my favorite, love it when Ennis says "Jack f*****g Twist. He says it at least twice in the movie, maybe three times. My 2nd favorite is Jacks's "I wish I knew how to quit you!" Not so much the words, but the way Jake delivers them. There is so much agony in his voice. It is so heartfelt! Does anybody know if "Jack f*****g Twist" is in the script, or is that something Heath sort of ad libbed? I get the feeling sometimes that some of their lines were ad libbed and Ang decided he liked them. I can't remember specific instances, just a feeling. Donna :)
"Jack f***in' twist" -when Ennis and Jack finally see each other after 4 years, and they have that adorable embrace... Its just so touching, and they are both so Hot in that part! Then Ennis calls Jack "little darling" -its so cute, so affectionate compared to the way Ennis usually was! :)
said by Ennis, after a discussion of how tired they were of eating beans and Jack suggested shooting a sheep:Hi JerBear, yes that's funny. Also, it is one of the three times I noticed that Ennis sounds aggrivated with Jack. Heath is such a good actor, he's great with voice inflection. The other two times are when the sheep get mixed up and Jack says "F**k Aguirre", and when he tells Jack that maybe Alma would let him and Lureen adopt the girls. He says something like "That's real smart, Jack.! then he says "Jack f*****g Twist" again.
"we're supposed to guard the sheep, not eat em"
This line caught me off guard; I thought it was funny!
I really enjoy these exchanges between Jack and Ennis. They just drive home their differences. Jack is just sooooooo ready to bend the rules and Ennis is so lawabiding and infrexible...........all the more power it gives his love for Jack.
"Stud duck" - Annie refers to Jack's dad as a stud duck. For the first time today I noticed that Lureen's dad refers to himself as a stud duck whose going to carve the turkey.
Has anyone heard this term before?

Not me but English is my second language. I read a lot of stuff in English but never came across Stud Duck.
Yeah, it really sounds like a made up term, but perhaps not.
"You have no idea how bad it gets!"
That line breaks my heart :'(
There is one other (there are so many) wordless quotes I enjoy : that is the noise that Lureen makes with her mouth after Jack gives her back her red hat at the rodeo. Should I call it her "matin' call' ? ;D

I get the feeling that Jack didn't really want to have to say all of this to Ennis, even though he didn't have much choice.
Jake delivers Jack's lines with such anguish. "Sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it" "You have no idea how bad it gets" "I wish I knew how to quit you!" Sometimes I just wanted to shake some sense into Ennis...I know he's in pain too, but he's his own worse enemy. Like Jack said, they "Could have had a real good life!" What a waste! Donna :(
I understand what Ennis means when he says at the end "I swear" but it is hard to put into words what he means.
What does it mean to you -- anyone?

Yes, rikcub, that one breaks my heart, too. And like you said he says it with such "sweet hope"...but we know it will never be. As their lives go on, I think Jack realizes that Ennis will never embrace their love, but in spite of that, in spite of the "short f***ing leash" Ennis keeps Jack on, Jack can't help himself...he keeps coming back. I have to agree with you...there are so many classic lines and Jack has many of them....for some reason one that ALWAYS tugs at my heart is "You know it could be like this, just like this always". I think it is because Jake's voice is just perfect in the delivery...all this sweet hope that you know is gonna get shot down. :'( :'( :'(

Jack is so completely and totally in love with Ennis he can't help himself. Ennis on the other hand is so completely and totally in love with Jack that he can't express himself. Could there ever be to more starcrossed lovers? Tragic love, but a tragic love like we have never seen or may see again in our times. I weep and weep and it never seems to get better. I have a love that will never grow old because it is a love like no other seen before, but a love so many of us have felt.

BBBoy, absolutely beautiful!
For some reason, Jack's "see ya for supper" after the first night in the tent gets to me. He comes wobbling out of that tent, shirt untucked, and walking funny (he did think to put his hat on, though ;D). Then he says the line, hoping it's not over. The expression on Jack's face reads a thousand different emotions: longing, worry, concern, hope, shame, love, lust, etc. Love the scenes on BBM--wish they never left! ;D

I'm with Patriot1 on this - he seems to stumble a little as he comes out of the tent but he's not walking like someone who's in pain in any way. I think he's probably got up pretty quick - he wakes up to realise that Ennis isn't there, hears Ennis outside saddling up the horse, and so gets up really fast to try and speak to him before he leaves - which would explain the unsteadiness as he comes out of the tent.
Koka, I'm sorry you had such a negative theatre experience. I was lucky and always got very respectful audiences. Now to get us back on topic, of course there are so many good lines in this movie. But I have to admit I really feel for Jack when he says maybe he'll be back "...if the army don't get me." The desperate hope in his face and voice when he says he might be back, like he's telling Ennis 'I'll be here if you decide to come back'.
...you girls need a push?
...you girls need a push?
'...or somethin' ;D
Man, I love that quote....and the way they say 'nooooooo'- always brings a smile on my face.
Love the scenes on BBM--wish they never left! ;D
You know, that is the first thing I looked for when Jack comes out of the tent...did he walk funny. I could never see that he did. When he comes out of the tent he does "wobble" some but that is because he just woke up, not because he was sore or anything like that. Or at least that is the way I took it.

That is precisely the one endearment that Ennis really pays Jack in the book and should have paid him in the movie.....It is SO Ennis and captures how Ennis feels about Jack without getting mushy, sentimental or sugary....I love it
We was good friends.
Says it all and says nothing.
JACK: Anything interesting up there in heaven?Jack knew that's exactly what Ennis meant which is why the proposal came next!
ENNIS: I was just sending up a prayer of thanks...
I know Ennis try to tell something more to Jack, maybe he try to say "thanks for bring me to life again" :t)
ennis:You ever get the feelin'... I don't know, er... when you're in town and someone looks at you all suspicious, like he knows? And then you go out on the pavement and everyone looks like they know too?
Jack Twist: [Casually] Well... maybe you oughta get out of there, you know? Find yourself someplace different. Maybe Texas.
Ennis Del Mar: [Sarcastically] Texas? Sure, maybe you can convince Alma to let you and Lureen to adopt the girls. And we can just live together herding sheep. And it'll rain money from LD Newsome and whiskey'll flow in the streams - Jack, that's real smart.
Jack Twist: Go to h***, Ennis. If you wanna live your miserable f**kin' life, then go right ahead.
Ennis Del Mar: Fine.
Jack Twist: I was just thinkin' out loud.
Ennis Del Mar: Yep, you're a real thinker there. Goddamn. Jack f**kin' Twist; got it all figured out, ain't ya
i loved this fight between them lol and i loved this well it really isnt a sentence but i loved the hole thing
Oh God this lines touching my soul... anybody else feel the same when Ennis say:
"Well, why don't you? Why don't you just let me be? It's because of you that I'm like this! I ain't got nothing... I ain't nowhere...(he's crying, Jack try to hug him) Get the f*** off me! (they fall on the ground) I can't stand being like this no more, Jack. :\'(

Just as you said, gimmejack. Utter brilliance -- writers, director, actors. This whole scene. Tragic, heartbreaking from the first moment when Ennis says he can't make it in August, to the end, Ennis collapsed in Jack's arms, and then the dozy embrace. Every single word of this confrontation/fight, is just so stunning, all the problems we all have, compounded by the particular challenges Ennis and Jack have faced all these years.
Okay, and a line I always really like is toward the beginning, when they're standing separated by space, Jack off on that little rise and Ennis still by the trucks, and Jack is ranting and raving (I don't have access right now to print or screen versions to quote this Jack dialogue specifically)...and Ennis says "Go easy on me, Jack." Somehow, to me, just his saying that, asking Jack to not be so harsh because he (Ennis) has his problems, is...I don't know the words for what it is, but it touches me and moves me and makes me cry for Ennis. And that's only near the beginning of the scene.

I also love the simplicity, yet many meanings of "Ennis...SONOFABITCH!!!"
Like saying I've missed you, cried for you, searched for you, dreamed of this moment for so long!
So many emotions in this expression!
Love all these recent posts...but my new favorite line is Jack's "Mmmmm...." after Ennis says he ain't yet had the opportunity." Just delicious, the way he says that, and his smile. Not a thoughtful kind of "hmmm," but like, "oh boy, yummy, one opportunity coming right up, Ennis."Mmmmmmm, yes yummy and delicious!!! Love that line.

It's the brilliance of Annie Proulx's writing translated by McMurtry and Ossana and then interpreted by two incredibly gifted actors. I do not think there is one wasted word in the whole movie.

Dreams that were thwarted or abandoned unfulfilled - Jack had very little chance of realizing them, given what he was up against. Yet it's Ennis who claims he has and is nothing, and he knows he had dreams only when it's to late even to acknowledge them to the only person who meant anything to him. Perhaps we ought to give Jack more credit for ay least pursuing his dreams, right to the end.

I think it is safe to say, the more one analyzes this quote the more one sees what a strong man Jack has been through the years and what a coward Ennis has been. But this is nothing new, nothing resolved, nothing changed.
and what a coward Ennis has been. But this is nothing new, nothing resolved, nothing changed.

well, in my opinion it's unfair to say Ennis was a coward. He was a victim. Both of them were victims. Ennis survives, living a life of misery. But it wasn't his fault. Sometimes you simply CANNOT do what you would like to do.
I think I would have to agree with you Ginevra.
Jack was also a victim because he was unfortunate enough to fall in love with Ennis.
I think I would have to agree with you Ginevra.
thanks, Patriot1! You know what....the truth is sometimes I get terribly protective of Ennis! :)Jack was also a victim because he was unfortunate enough to fall in love with Ennis.
I'm afraid I cannot agree on this, though! ;D. In my opinion Jack, however unfortunate he may have been, was lucky enough to experience the true, absolute Love, the one with a capital L. Granted, his fate was tragedy, yet I think those who know love - true love - are the luckiest people of the world. The real tragedy is in fact living without love. And Jack was blessed with the greatest love of all, if only for a brief moment. Incurably romantic, that's what I am!!! ;D
Almost every one of the main characters was a victim in some way - Ennis of his father's conditioning, Jack of Ennis's fears, the two wives of husbands who really wanted to be with someone else, the children - ennis's saw him but weren't really part of his life and Bobby lost his father at a very early age too. Cassie was another victim - of Ennis's inability to commit t o anyone other than Jack, and not to commit to him wholeheartedly either.I completely agree with you WW. But even though there were reasons for their victimization within these interpersonal relationships, we can't dismiss the "big picture." This, to me, is a world where love is not appreciated, much less tolerated, if it doesn't fit into the mold that society has deemed acceptable. When two people, such as Jack and Ennis, who perfectly fit together are not allowed to develop their relationship, despite what they would like to do, it affects everyone else they come in contact with.
Just posted on BBM Recital - the bit where Jack says " We got to do something about this food situation" and goes on to propose shooting a sheep. Ennis disagrees and says he'll stick with beans, to which Jack replies, "Well, I won't." It suddenly struck me that this set the pattern for all the rest of the story - Jackl never wants to be bound by convention or the rules but doesn;t care if he transgresses them; Ennis, however, is always going to be afraid to do anything unconventional, differnt, that might attract disapproval or trouble - he'll be satisfied with what he can get, however limited.
And that's their relationship in a nutshell; if Jack had been more of a psychologist he could have read Ennis at this point and known that Ennis would never even try to achieve the sweet life with him.
Agreed, they were too young to be have much insight and given Jack's character he wouldn't have given up easily. not so sure about Ennis - i think essentially he was never really open to possibilities because he was too busy clinging to what he saw as safety.

That is the relevant word there, WW, safety. He just had so much fear about life in all ways. But still, in his heart of hearts, I bet he had some dreams, too...
kathy
I can only completely agree with respect to the earlier posts. Ennis fears change, fears being branded "different," and ultimately fears that any difference will bring about a beating. He can't see the benefits of trying "something else." Jack may have been more willing to find a way to establish a more permanence in the relationship with Ennis; but he, too, feels the responsibility of a wife and a son and a life in Texas.
They seemed to have experienced a time when there were no intrusion from others, themselves, or life's burdens, only once. When the greatest worry were the coyotes. Jack may have overly simplified the complexity of their love, when in anger he refers to this idyllic point in time, a point in time etched onto their beings, which they could never go back to or discover again, "All we got is Brokeback Mountain... that's all." :(
I tend to think that both Ennis and Jack believed they shared much more than those two months; yet, were painfully unable to recreate any semblance of that time- in which they gave only to each other, assisted only each other, took only from each other, and thought only about each other. Yes, those were good times. But the product of that mountain was a love; much greater than anything they had ever experienced before and something which was more significant than anything they would ever experience since.
You can see the movie as an example of the transience of happiness... they've kept almost but not quite recreating that first summer on Brokeback and have kept it as an ideal long after most of us, in the normal way of things, would have let it become a part of the past. The rage is partly at the loss of what still seems relatively close to them, or at least to Jack - I think Ennis may have more of a sense of the passing of time and the changes it brings - but also an undertone at raging of the dying of the light, to quote ( almost) one of the twentieth century's great poems.Well said, WW! When I watch the movie, the time long gone element gets put on the shelf. I guess I become a Jack, who feels that there is still hope that they can run up the mountainside and forget the troubles of daily life, something of which, like you mentioned, Ennis cannot ignore. But, yet, they're only 39 years old. Hope is still attainable. Their emotions for each other have remained as strong as when they were young and innocent. A life together is not unreachable. It would be difficult for them to arrive, as it's always been, but they hold on to that goal. I like your use of "rage at the loss," and that this loss will never be replaced. But wasn't there some way to progress their relationship, even while including adult responsibilities? I imagine if you're stuck somewhere and can't move, you'll remain, and that's the tragedy which this tale illustrates.

I'm 59, going on 60, an I still believe there is a love out there for me that will never grow old. Foolish, probably, but I'm not gonna give up hoping.

I was 59-1/2 the other day...and I also believe that the love that will never grow old is not out of the question. But we have to do more than hope, of course. And that is one of the lessons of BBM for us.

Ennis Del Mar: We can get together... once in a while, way the hell out in the middle of nowhere, but...
Jack Twist: Once in a while? Every four f***in' years?

Made me cried too. Something else that made me cry in that scene, is all the unspoken from the clothes. Heath's threadbared hat and coat vs Jack's top of the notch clothing. Poor vs wealthy, the guys were living in two different worlds. They were both poor at the beginning, Jack went out of poverty by marriage. Heat's remained in poverty all is life doing is best to raise his daughters and pay the pensions after the divorce. Wich was a part of their argument. So sad... What a brilliant, silent and poetic movie! O.k. got watery eyes again. PBS! :'(
That helps explains why Ennis said "I never had no thoughts a doin it with another guy except I sure wrang it out a hundred times thinkin about you...." ;)
I like to think that he really wanted to be nice to his kids..but at the same time, his face seems to be showing a different meaning. In Europe we say "do you want my picture" when someone stares at you. The girls had over heard their parents argument, and when Ennis turns back to go back to the house, the girls are staring at him..he then asks if the girls want a push" but looked angry, then if I remember correctly he shoots some ash bucket, no? He is still angry.
I saw Ennis' comment as a "WARNING girls don't annoy your dad today"
Sorry if my English isn't tip top..I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open as I type this! :-\

Whoa, I don't remember that line - is that in the film?
When ever I watch a movie enough times, I can quote it. I was just wondering what are some people's favorite quotes, whether it be from the movie, book whatever.
Aaaah yes! JAKE AND HEATH COMMENTARY! Deleted scenes, making of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh. It's somehow already on preorder at Blockbuster online
Ennis- "I can't stand it anymore!"
I don't get what happened right after that scene. Why didn't Ennis stay with Jack? He just said it and left so to me it doesn't make sense. I wish they showed a little more of that part to clear things up.
Ennis- "I can't stand it anymore!"FROM THE SS, right after the confrontation from their last meeting:
I don't get what happened right after that scene. Why didn't Ennis stay with Jack? He just said it and left so to me it doesn't make sense. I wish they showed a little more of that part to clear things up.
Ennis desperately wanted to be with Jack. The hardest part was admitting that not just to Jack, but to himself. In the end, all the secrecy, the pain and the frustration of their situation became too much for him to bare.
:\'( :\'( :\'(
Jack: Anything interesting up there in heaven? And the answer to his prayers!
Ennis: I was just sending up a prayer of thanks. ;D ;D ;D
Oh mine..who would have thought Ennis could give such humorous response? Only to his beloved Jack. Jack was his kingdom.
Ennis- "I can't stand it anymore!"
I don't get what happened right after that scene. Why didn't Ennis stay with Jack? He just said it and left so to me it doesn't make sense. I wish they showed a little more of that part to clear things up.
One of the techniques used in presenting the movie is borrowed from the prologue of the short story which describes Ennis getting started for a day. The author refers to Ennis's dreams by stating that "he was suffused with peasure because jack Twist was in his dream. ...He...lets a panel of the dream slide forward. If he does not force his attention on it, it might stoke the day, rewarm that old, cold time on the mountain, when they owned the world and nothing seemed wrong."
So, the film is told in "panels" (or, alternatively, in "postcards"), small pictures of certain times or events in their lives. It's also part of "never enough time, never enough" that we're never shown anything completely, just pictures of moments. Most would agree there's far too little tent time, for example, but there are so many other things that are left to our imagination. Randall, for example is shown in only one sequence in the movie and he doesn't exist at all in the short story, and although Jack is shown totally ignoring him and avoiding any answer about the fishin' cabin (croppie house in the story), some people have made him Jack's second lover. Personally, and for many reasons, I don't think Randall ever got any further than the dance, but realizing that Jack betrays Ennis has become a necessity for many people. I don't understand the "why" of this at all, but I've come to know that I'm in a tiny minority. And that's OK, too, but the "incompleteness" of some of the scenes in the film is built in, I think, to give us some of the sense of frustration our boys had just in living their daily lives as well as with being able to share their love for one another.
orangetruck -
There is another indication of how things are going to go in this movie, at the very beginning, just after Ennis arrives at Aguirre's trailer. He is shown leaning against the trailer, in the breaks between the passing freight cars in short shots, almost stills: frieght car; Ennis; freight car; Ennis; freight car; Ennis; frieght car; etc., in a rhythm that has nothing to do with what's happening beyond the rhythm itself - but toward the end of the shot, suddenly we see that Ennis has moved his hand up to his mouth, and he's smoking, but we are not shown Ennis's hand going from near his pants pocket to his mouth. I think that's something of how the film goes: without any preparation, we're shown a change. We're shown that Jack's been aware of "feelings" between them from when they were still up on Brokeback in the DE, but not until the last time they talk with one another, 20 years later - while Ennis, 20 years later, has yet to name these strong desires he has to be with and continue to be with Jack as love.
That's interesting. I had noticed the sketchy frames in the passing freight car, too.
I first wanna say this is a great post. ^f^
I partially agree about Jack finally being aware of the mutual feelings he looks back on from final confrontation. But I think he'd been having glimpses of such a thing, only now he's come to specifically place an image on the spar** vulnerability of Ennis' projection of love. Jack can encapsulate Ennis' ability to love a man inside one of those half black half white cold capsules. He just can't swallow it and feel better.
One of the most interesting things about great art is that the greatest of it acts like a mirror to whoever perceives it. Everybody sees themself in the greatest art, or can realistically relate it to their lives. This is what elevates Brokeback among the greats - short story or film (some even believe the minor discrepancies between the script and the film make the script eligible for this category.... :*( ).
Jack knows he wants Ennis, but even after the fall from the mountain he thinks for pretty much four years that it's over. But even at that, unlike Ennis, he does go out to hookup with the occasional hustler or lonesome cowboy. (One internet correspondent I met pre-Brokeback was a gay cowboy from eastern Washington state who asked me if I knew the difference between a straight cowboy and a gay one. I said,
"no;" he said, "a six pack." O0 ) Anyway, I think that Jack really likes the sex with Ennis, but knows that his heart is with him, too. He's never had the "benefit" of an Earl-like experience in his life, and so does not behave in anywhere hear as self-restricted manner as Ennis. Jack's been out drinkin' and foolin' around with other rodeo cowboys, so he knows a world of homosex much different than the world Ennis knows: Jack knows from experience that other guys like to do it with other guys; Ennis knows that two guys ranchin' up together = death. OTOH, Ennis knows his life is all about the sex and the happiness of Jack and him together. He doesn't know that the whole package is called love; Jack knows a lot more about sex than Ennis, but wants the daily partnership he's seen his parents have - he tries to be "loved." The only other people in the film or story that Ennis "loves," and he says he loves them, are his little girls, and he knows that his "thing" with Jack is not the same thing. IMO, Ennis can't believe it's love because he doesn't know what love between two adults is; Jack knows he's got plenty of what he needs coming from Ennis, but he desperately needs it to be identified as "love", to reassure himself of the worth his father stole from him as a child. The real tragedy here is that both our boys have the love they need and want, but neither gets it that that's what they've got: and so it is, their own insecurities, beaten and shocked into them in childhood, which rule and destroy their lives. :\'(
I know this has been said, but I am new here and as I mentioned, I can't figure out my way around here yet.
That scene around the camp fire before the tent scene; When Ennis said "you may be a sinner, but I HAVEN'T YET HAD THE OPPORTUNITY." There was absolutely nothing else that could have meant, is there?
Could there have been any other meaning?
Sorry to bring up something that everybody may be done with, but give the poor newbie a break. :\'(
HL, I even felt that as a newbie after the forum had been around for five months when I came here. So much had been talked about already, but at that time it wasn't all that difficult to go back to the beginning of a thread and read the whole thing...which I often did.
So yes, this has been talked about and talked about -- it is definitely a favorite scene! And you are right, that this was clearly an admission by Ennis to Jack...and we could say, an invitation. It could well mean that he was a virgin even with women (though that would make me start to discuss young men in the western ranch country in the early 60's and I may find that rather unlikely), and it certainly meant he's a virgin with men...and there are many other things that "sinner" could mean in the context of their lives. Drinking and smoking sure weren't sins in their kinds of lives (not being "religious" per se), and we would doubt they were into any criminal activity except maybe some youthful shenanigans. But whatever he meant by not having the opportunity to "sin" yet, it was clearly flirtatious! I just love this scene. Ennis is getting real comfortable there with his new bud.
kathy
I love these posts, zephK and orangetruck. Perceptive, poetic... Such a rich subject.

I go back to what I remember to be my first post in this thread. Although not explicitly in the film and not exactly a direct quote in film and short story, I still love this one best: "Let be, let be."
"I wish I knew how to quit you" is probably the most famous line in the entire movie...
Yeah, that line, and maybe, "If you can't fix it you gotta stand it", right? And maybe then, "Just like this, always". But you're right. I read that in 2006 "I wish I knew how to quit you" was the line more said in the whole world!!! (t) (t) (t) WOW!!
AF, I just love "never enough time, never enough". I think that's is another great important very famous quote, Thomas.
But if you stop to think about it just a second, you'll see that almost all quotes are important and famous, and of course, so beautiful. <^( <^(
"I wish I knew how to quit you"
and
"If you can't fix it you gotta stand it"
are probably the 2 most famous lines in the movie, no? But for us, there are so many others that we also know by heart. For such a short story and such a laconic movie realization (relaying less on words compared to other films), BBM certainly has a lot of richness.
The one line that always intrigued me was when Jack said to Ennis that it was more words he spoke in two weeks and Ennis answered "Hell, that's the most I've spoke in a year".
Wow, what was it about Jack that made Ennis open up to him. Was it just the isolation of the mountain that forced him to open up to the only person there with him. I think Ennis would have been just as content to be alone on that mountain with the sheep.
But there was just something about Jack that made want to reveal more about himself. Ennis was not totally isolated, he did have Alma, and the community they lived in. Ennis would have been considered the "quiet type", man of few words, but on the contrary man with something to say, but no one to say to until he met Jack.
I think this is the first time Ennis ever really reached outside himself, to be himself, letting his guard down, knowing that someone would just listen.
Maybe that was the moment it all began for the both of them.

How ironic was it during the confrontation after Ennis crumbled that he was the one to say "I can't stand this anymore, Jack" That said a lot to me just how weary he was of trying to lead a double life and a lie about who he really was.

And ain't no reins on this one :)
THis of course, is also quite memorable! For some reason, I think of our fellow member NoReins whenever I hear this quote! :)

Yes,it's memorable because,IMO,it's the best love's statement without words that Ennis could say to Jack.To realize that their love-or "this thing"-can't be stopped because it's stronger than them.
Oh yeah, I think about Lindsey too!! ;D ;D ;D And also about Samira and her tattoo!!
Mrs. Twist to Ennis: "Come back and see us again" ..I always got the feeling that Ennis felt had he known Jack's mom would be this accepting, he would visited sooner. She gave him hope that there was one person who did'nt hate . He lingered outside as if saying * yeah I could've lived here after all. Maybe this could've worked.
