ennis:You ever get the feelin'... I don't know, er... when you're in town and someone looks at you all suspicious, like he knows? And then you go out on the pavement and everyone looks like they know too?
Jack Twist: [Casually] Well... maybe you oughta get out of there, you know? Find yourself someplace different. Maybe Texas.
Ennis Del Mar: [Sarcastically] Texas? Sure, maybe you can convince Alma to let you and Lureen to adopt the girls. And we can just live together herding sheep. And it'll rain money from LD Newsome and whiskey'll flow in the streams - Jack, that's real smart.
Jack Twist: Go to h***, Ennis. If you wanna live your miserable f**kin' life, then go right ahead.
Ennis Del Mar: Fine.
Jack Twist: I was just thinkin' out loud.
Ennis Del Mar: Yep, you're a real thinker there. Goddamn. Jack f**kin' Twist; got it all figured out, ain't ya

i loved this fight between them lol and i loved this well it really isnt a sentence but i loved the hole thing

The one thing Ennis can never consider, until it's too late, being with Jack. :\'(
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

Re: the passage above
I think it's very interesting that in the post-divorce scene, when Ennis looks at the passing truck and his sentence trails off, Jack obviously reads the writing on the wall. "Yeah, ok. I'll see you next month then." But in this scene, he completely misreads (wishful thinking probably) Ennis's meaning. He takes it as Ennis being uneasy in his present surroundings and suggests a change of location. When we can clearly see that what it really means is Ennis is uncomfortable with himself and unfortunately no amount of relocating can get you away from yourself.  :(

Just as you said, gimmejack.  Utter brilliance -- writers, director, actors.  This whole scene.  Tragic, heartbreaking from the first moment when Ennis says he can't make it in August, to the end, Ennis collapsed in Jack's arms, and then the dozy embrace.  Every single word of this confrontation/fight, is just so stunning, all the problems we all have, compounded by the particular challenges Ennis and Jack have faced all these years.

Okay, and a line I always really like is toward the beginning, when they're standing separated by space, Jack off on that little rise and Ennis still by the trucks, and Jack is ranting and raving (I don't have access right now to print or screen versions to quote this Jack dialogue specifically)...and Ennis says "Go easy on me, Jack."  Somehow, to me, just his saying that, asking Jack to not be so harsh because he (Ennis) has his problems, is...I don't know the words for what it is, but it touches me and moves me and makes me cry for Ennis.  And that's only near the beginning of the scene.

Yes, Ennis did not want the little time they had together ruined with such news and it must have been wieghing so heavily on him that he had to come out with it knowing how Jack would respond.  Perfectly acted by Heath and OMG I feel for both of them in this scene.  How Jack, in the midst of his own pain and rejection fights Ennis just to be able to console him... :\'(

It's the brilliance of Annie Proulx's writing translated by McMurtry and Ossana and then interpreted by two incredibly gifted actors. I do not think there is one wasted word in the whole movie.

I so agree...not a wasted word.  Even the simple line when Jack tells Ennis "we dont want the fish and game catchin us with no elk"!  It is like they are being naughty together, bonding  Ennis taking care of Jacks needs and Jack praising him for his efforts..."Wooooowwwweeeee"!!!  Nothing wasted at all.

Love all these recent posts...but my new favorite line is Jack's "Mmmmm...." after Ennis says he ain't yet had the opportunity."  Just delicious, the way he says that, and his smile.  Not a thoughtful kind of "hmmm," but like, "oh boy, yummy, one opportunity coming right up, Ennis."

And the little half-heard thank-yous from Ennis - when he borrows the lighter in the bar, when Jack pases him a drink - you can tell he's not really used to hearing the sound of his own voice and doesn't want to say much. The noises in the movie are as telling as the owrds sometimes.

Absolutely right.
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

i think this is the most painful quote in the movie and one of my favorite parts even though it is so gut wrenching.   the pain in ennis's voice and the tears that come, he wants to blame it all on Jack but he knows he can't.  he's hurt in more ways than one.   this scene makes me cry the most.    :\'(

John Twist: Jack used to say, "Ennis Del Mar," he used to say; "I'm gonna bring him up here one of these days, and we'll lick this damn ranch into shape. Had some half-baked notion the two of you was gonna move up here. Build a cabin, help run the place.

[pause]

John Twist: Then this spring, he got another fella gonna come up here with him. Build a place, help run the ranch. Some ranch neighbor o' his down in Texas. Was gonna split up with his wife and come back here. But like most of Jack's ideas... never did come to pass.

Dreams that were thwarted or abandoned unfulfilled - Jack had very little chance of realising them, given what he was up against. Yet it's Ennis who claims he has and is nothing, and he knows he had dreams only when it's to late even to acknowledge them to the only person who meant anything to him. Perhpas we ought to give Jack more credit for ay least pursuing his dreams, right to the end.

I think it is safe to say, the more one analyzes this quote the more one sees what a strong man Jack has been through the years and what a coward Ennis has been. But this is nothing new, nothing resolved, nothing changed.
