Alma, holding Jr. in her arms watches the boys drive off together, weakly waves a hand, sniffles and cries as she sees her husband ride off with the man he so clearly loves.

In a new scene the boys head up to the mountains in Jack's snappy red & white pickup. They find the location of the old swimming hole, Jack parks the truck, the boys quickly strip down and, running to the edge of a cliff where, free of their clothes (and any other inhibitions), they jump in.

Ennis (who just can't wait) yells:     LAST ONE IN!

Ennis beats Jack in (of course) by a fraction of a second. When their heads emerge from the water they whoop and holler at each other and the trees and rocks. Their joy of being here again with each other is uninhibited.

Jack :(all serious now, looking down)   What if me and you had a little ranch together somewhere, little cow-and-calf operation, it'd be some sweet life.      (pauses, looks at Ennis)    and hell, Lureen's old man, you bet he'd give me a down-payment if I'd get lost, I mean, he already more or less said it....

     No I, . . I told you, . . it ain't gonna' be that way.

Gets up from his recline facing Jack, sits close to Jack, but doesn't look him in the eye, continues . . .

     Ya' know you, . . you got your wife n' baby in Texas, n, . . you know I got my life in Riverton.

(We see in a flashback a little boy Ennis,his brother and father walking from a dusty path).Ennis keeps on talking:

-And they was a joke in town, even though they were pretty tough old birds.Anyway, they... they found Earl dead in an irrigation ditch.

(We see meanwhile young Ennis afraid face by stopping near Earl body).

New scene:  the back of the Riverton laundromat, where Junior and Jenny are swinging on a swing set.  Inside the Del Mar apartment, the sound of an argument in progress:

Ennis shouting at Alma:  Where the hell do ya think you're going?

Alma replies loudly:  To work!

Ennis:  I thought you had the day off!

Alma:  Well you thought wrong!

Ennis:  The girls need to be fed!

Alma:  You take care of it!

Ennis yells as Alma leaves:  Alma!  Alma!

Alma yells:  Supper is on the stove!

Ennis yells back:  No one's eatin' it unless you're servin' it.  Alma..

New scene: A sunny day at the sales lot at Newsome Farm Equipment in Childress, Texas. Jack Climbing aboard what looks like a large red combine. Jack shouting (to be heard) to an assembled group of nine potential buyers:

JACK: Listen to her purr gentleman. You're not gonna' get that with your Caddy. I told you she could do it, now let me show you.

Two ranchers, inside in Lureen's office, are lookin' out the window at Jack put the equipment through it's paces on the lot:

RANCHER 1: Say, isn't that the pissant that used ta' ride the bulls?

RANCHER 2: He used to try.

Lureen looks up from her papers, ignores their comments, says nuthin'.

At the Riverton apartment.  Alma has just come in with the groceries.  She looks at the day's mail, and spies a suspicious postcard.  Yes, it is from Jack.  Message is: 

Ennis

See you in a couple of weeks. Fish should be jumpin'

Jack

Alma hears Ennis parking the truck, so she hides the postcard within the pile of the day's mail...
